What is Macrobiotics ? by Phiya Kushi The macrobiotic approach is based on the view that we are the result of and are continually influenced by our total environment, which ranges from the foods we eat and our daily social interactions to the climate and geography in which we live. In considering all factors that influence our lives, the macrobiotic approach to health and healing views sickness as the natural attempt of the body to return to a more harmonious and dynamic state with the natural environment. As what we choose to eat and drink and how we live our lives are primary environmental factors that influence our health and create who we are, the macrobiotic approach emphasizes the importance of proper dietary and lifestyle habits. The macrobiotic approach is based on principles, theories and practices that have been known to philosophers, scholars, and physicians throughout history. The term "macrobiotics" comes from Greek ("macro" meaning "large" or "long", and "bios" meaning "life") and was first coined by Hippocrates, the father of western medicine. Its most recent development stems from Michio Kushi who was inspired by philosopher-writer George Ohsawa. George Ohsawa published numerous works in Japanese, English and French, which combined the western traditions of macrobiotics with 5,000 years of traditional oriental medicine.
By using macrobiotic principles to address and adjust environmental, dietary and lifestyle influences, thousands of individuals have been able to prolong their lives by recovering from a wide range of illnesses including heart disease, cancer, diabetes and many others (view some of these recovery testimonials on our library pages). The macrobiotic approach to health recovery can be used along with conventional and alternative medical treatment and intervention and is compatible with and adaptable to all forms of religious and traditional cultural practices.

How much do you know—REALLY know—about the food you consume every day? For millions of Americans, the answer is “not much”. In our fast-paced, multi-tasking world, many busy people grab their meals on the go, without thinking about what they’re putting into their bodies. Fast foods and processed meals may fill you up, but they contribute very little in terms of nutritional value. In fact, many of them can actually jeopardize your health. If you’re ready to transform your relationship with food and achieve a higher level of wellness, a macrobiotic diet could be right for you. Based on the Far Eastern concept of cultivating health and longevity with organically grown foods, macrobiotics is more than just another trendy food plan—it’s a holistic lifestyle that strives to achieve a symmetrical balance between the body, mind, and spirit. Your Essential Guide on the Path to Wellness The Everything® Guide to Macrobiotics  includes everything you need to know to seamlessly integrate a macrobiotic diet into your everyday routine:
  • Essential nutritional principles of the macrobiotic diet Information about how macrobiotics promotes an intimate relationship with nature

You can even if you're not Grizzly Adams. We hope to balance all the work with recreation though (volleyball? massage? sweatlodge? painting?) and great food. Accommodations will be tents at first until we get more permanent dwellings built. A type of diet characterized by optimizing the balance of yin and yang. George Ohsawa (1893-1966) started the macrobiotic movement with the publication of his Zen Macrobiotics in 1965. Michio Kushi popularized the movement in the United States. The basics of the diet promoted by Kushi were established by Sagen Ishizuka, a 19th century Japanese army doctor, although a German physician, Christoph Hufeland, published a book on preventive medicine which he called Macrobiotik in the late 18th century.

Macrobiotics Macrobiotics
Modern macrobiotics dates from the late 19th century when a Western-trained Japanese Army doctor, Sagen Ishizuka, became frustrated by allopathic medicine's ineffectiveness treating his own chronic illness. He researched traditional Oriental medicine and developed a therapy he called shoku-yo ("food-cure"). This treatment proved so successful that Ishizuka left the army and set up a private clinic. According to David Briscoe, macrobiotics teacher, blood is the foundation of health, both physical and mental. For the blood quality to be good, the quality of the food must be good. Without changing your blood quality, it is probably not possible to have long-term health. All other changes, beneficial as they may seem, will be undermined if the blood quality is not healthy. Blood quality is much more than having adequate volume of blood or enough production of red and white blood cells. Blood quality is determined by many factors in the blood, as follows:
  • pH or acid-alkaline balance Blood sugar Fat and oil Water Na/K (Sodium/Potassium) balance Concentration of other minerals

Macrobiotics
Macrobiotics is an all encompassing philosophy of living that uses diet as a primary focus. The macrobiotic understanding has its roots in Oriental philosophy such as Taoism and Chinese Medicine and advocates living in harmony with nature, especially through eating natural foods. Originally from Japan, there is a noticeable Japanese influence on the way macrobiotics is currently being taught and practiced. Yet, the philosophy of macrobiotics includes encompassing principles that apply to all cultures. Macrobiotics is a complete philosophy of life. Macrobiotics teaches principles of endless change, complimentary opposites, and a universal order, as understood by ancient and modern philosophers. Balance is a primary principle, the wisdom of unity and harmony between seemingly conflicting differences. In regards to diet, where veganism and vegetarianism are merely concerned with not eating various animal products, the macrobiotic philosophy actually discusses what to eat , including the quality of food, cooking methods, cooking equipment, and even covers proper chewing.

Lifestyle practices that keep you healthy:
  • Sit down at the same time each day for meals. Try it - you'll be amazed! When you sit down and pay attention to what you eat, you'll eat less. And eating meals at close to the same time each day keeps important body functions like sleep, menstruation, bowels (yup!), regular too. Chew your food well - you'll eat less and enjoy it more (and your stomach will thank you) Do a body rub daily. After your bath or shower, take 10 minutes to gently rub your body with a warm washcloth. This activates your circulation and promotes deep cleansing. Fill the spaces you spend lots of time in like offices and bedrooms with green plants - they are potent air purifiers Walk every day - 30 minutes each day is all it takes. And don't forget to sing happy songs, read uplifting books, see funny movies - laughter is still the best medicine. Be Happy!
The Great Life Diet will directly improve the quality of your life.
