    Jan 2004
    Hardcover
    Book Description
Separated from the mainland of Africa for 160 million years, Madagascar has evolved an incredible wealth of biodiversity, with thousands of species that can be found nowhere else on earth. For instance, of its estimated 12,000 plant species, nearly 10,000 are unique to Madagascar. Malagasy animals are just as spectacular, from its almost forty currently recognized species of lemursa primate group found only hereto the numerous species of tiny dwarf chameleons. With astounding frequency scientists discover a previously unknown species in Madagascarand at almost the same rate another natural area of habitat is degraded or destroyed, a combination that recently led conservation organizations to name Madagascar one of the most important and threatened conservation priorities on the planet.

Unsourced material may be challenged and removed (June 2007) The recorded history of Madagascar began in the 7th century when the Bantus established trading posts for trade with Arab merchants along the northwest coast of the island. Madagascar's prehistory began when the first human settlers arrived, which included a large component from Southeast Asia . This explains the range of Malagasy features, which form a mixture of genotypes from both Austronesians and Africans , as well as later Arab Indian , and European settlers. Madagascar became known to Europeans after the Age of Discovery . From the 17th century through to the Scramble for Africa , the British and French colonial empires competed for influence in Madagascar. After a brief de facto protectorate period beginning in 1885 the island became a full formal French protectorate in 1890, then a colony in 1896, and gained full independence from

    History
The animals of Madagascar found plentiful foodstuffs, and an almost total lack of predators. Because evolutionary pressures on Madagascar's early inhabitants were almost nonexistent, the island literally teems with life forms that have changed little in hundreds of thousands, even millions of years. In many ways, Madagascar is literally a land that time forgot.
Unfortunately for many of these creatures, the arrival of man represented their first encounter with a predator. It took almost 1,000 years, but skilled human hunters managed to drive almost two dozen of those unique and irreplaceable animal species to extinction. Although they lived in tribes, the African, Indian, and Arabic races managed to avoid segregation. Over many hundreds of years, an incredible synthesis of tradition, religion, language, and genetics took place, creating a society remarkable in its uniformity of language and beliefs, and striking in its physical beauty. In 1500, Portugese explorers landed on the island of Madagascar, did a little exploration, and returned to Europe. Word of the Portugese "discovery" spread to France and England, and both countries rushed to establish settlements on the island. The local tribes formed loose coalitions to succesfully defend themselves against the invading Europeans again and again.

    HISTORY
Madagascar Table of Contents THE REPUBLIC OF MADAGASCAR, formerly known as the Malagasy Republic and the Democratic Republic of Madagascar, has undergone significant socioeconomic and political changes during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Occupying a strategic location off the southeast coast of Africa, the island historically became the target of British and French imperial ambitions. Ultimately, the competition resulted in French colonization at the end of the nineteenth century. The country gained full independence from colonial rule on June 26, 1960. Philibert Tsiranana headed the conservative regime of the First Republic, which was superseded in 1975 by a Marxist-oriented military regime under Lieutenant Commander Didier Ratsiraka. In the face of rising political dissent and socioeconomic decline that reached its height at the beginning of the 1990s, the Second Republic succumbed to the wave of democratization spreading throughout the African continent. On March 27, 1993, the inauguration of Albert Zafy as the third elected president of Madagascar since independence marked the beginning of the Third Republic. After increasing contact with Europeans from the 15th century, Madagascar became a French colony in 1895. Following the Second World War there was increasing tension in the country, with civil uprisings resulting in French troops killing thousands. Independence was achieved in 1960.

    History of Madagascar
    1. The origins The population of Madagascar results from successive immigrations of various origins. According to the oral tradition, the first inhabitants of the island were Vazimba. They were Indonesian sailors who landed on the Malagasy coasts and reached the central highlands of the island. They were followed by other influxes of immigrants coming also from Southeast Asia , namely the Philippines Malaysia and Indonesia From the 8 th century, various groups of Arabs established several trading posts on the northern coasts of the island. Madagascar became an important place for spice and slave trade. So a growing Africanization of the Malagasy population started. In 1500, Diego Dias, a Portuguese navigator , was the first European that discovered the Big Island Since Madagascar was an important port on the Spice Route, European countries , more precisely Portugal (16 th c.), the Netherlands (end of the 16 th c.), and the United Kingdom (17
