Electromagnetic four-potential Scientists Ampère Coulomb Faraday Gauss ... e A magnetic field is a field of force produced by moving electric charges , by electric fields that vary in time, and by elementary particles that possess their own 'intrinsic' magnetic field, a relativistic effect which is usually modeled as a spin of the particle. The Lorentz force equation provides the modern physics definition of the magnetic field as the force field responsible for the velocity-dependent force on a charged particle. Magnetic fields are also generated by magnetic objects, like permanent magnets , where the source of the field can be traced back to one of the three fundamental sources. The magnetic fields due to and within magnetic materials is described using two separate fields which can be both called a magnetic field: a magnetic B field and a magnetic H field.

Magnetic Fields
People not familiar with magnetism often view it as a somewhat mysterious property of specially treated iron or steel.
Either pole can also attract iron objects such as pins and paper clips. That is because under the influence of a nearby magnet, each pin or paper clip becomes itself a temporary magnet, with its poles arranged in a way appropriate to magnetic attraction.
But this property of iron is a very special type of magnetism, almost an accident of nature!
It is all related to electricity.
In 1821 Hans Christian Oersted in Denmark found, unexpectedly, that such an electric current caused a compass needle to move. An electric current produced a magnetic force!
Andre-Marie Ampere in France soon unraveled the meaning. The fundamental nature of magnetism was not associated with magnetic poles or iron magnets, but with electric currents. The magnetic force was basically a force between electric currents (figure below):
Here is how this can lead to the notion of magnetic poles. Bend the wires into circles with constant separation (figure below):

  • Video Monitor flickering
  • Audible hum
  • MRI artifacts
In addition, there is a growing concern over the long-term health risks associated with exposure to these fields.
Conventional methods of dealing with EMF's include costly electro-magnetic surveys and brute force shielding that is either very expensive or very heavy - often requiring structural reinforcement. The PowerLines Advantage In many cases, EMF's are caused by wiring errors, ground loops, and other electrical system problems that can be corrected without heavy shielding. PowerLines can identify the source of your EMF's and propose cost-effective solutions. In many cases, the solutions involve simple wiring changes or low cost shielding. If you need a more in-depth electro-magnetic survey or brute force shielding, we can point you to reputable organizations that can provide these costlier services. Our Clients Amuneal Manufacturing Corporation

Magnetic Fields due to a Solenoid
A solenoid is made out of a current-carrying wire which is coiled into a series of turns (with the turns preferably as close together as possible). The magnetic field due to a straight length of wire is shown in Figure 1 - the field circles the wire and its magnitude (or strength) decreases with radial distance from the wire.
Figure 1: Magnetic field due to a straight wire In a solenoid, a large field is produced parallel to the axis of the solenoid (in the z-direction in figure 2). Components of the magnetic field in other directions are cancelled by opposing fields from neighbouring coils. Outside the solenoid the field is also very weak due to this cancellation effect and for a solenoid which is long in comparison to its diameter, the field is very close to zero. Inside the solenoid the fields from individual coils add together to form a very strong field along the center of the solenoid.
Figure 2: Magnetic field in a solenoid o This gives the field in the centre of the solenoid.

  • Electric and magnetic fields (EMF) are areas of energy that surround any electrical device. EMFs are produced by power lines, electrical wiring, and appliances (see Question 1 Electric fields are easily shielded or weakened by walls and other objects, whereas magnetic fields are not. Since magnetic fields are more likely to penetrate the body, they are the component of EMFs that are usually studied in relation to cancer (see Question 1 Overall, there is limited evidence that magnetic fields cause childhood leukemia , and there is inadequate evidence that these magnetic fields cause other cancers in children (see Question 2 Studies of magnetic field exposure from power lines and electric blankets in adults show little evidence of an association with leukemia

MAGNETIC FIELDS
Background
A magnetic field is the area around a magnet where its magnetic force can be felt.
Materials Needed
1 bar magnet
1 compass
Procedure
1. Place the magnet in the center of the next page. 2. Put the compass near one end of the magnet. Let the needle stop moving. Note the direction of the needle. Lift the compass and draw an arrow where the compass was. The arrow should point in the same direction as the painted end of the compass needle. 3. Move the compass toward the middle of the magnet. When the needle settles, note its direction and draw an arrow as before. 4. Repeat this as you move the compass to the other end of the magnet. 5. Now start again from a different place near the end of the magnet. Go from end to end at least 3 times. Explore both above and below the magnet. 6. When you're done, your arrows show you where the magnetic field is.

Adept at computer music programming and production, Merritt records his own albums and plays almost everything on them with help from cellist Sam Davol, banjo player/second guitarist John Woo, and percussionist/pianist Claudia Gonson. Merritt's first two CD's, "The Wayward Bus" and "Distant Plastic Trees", came out in 1991 and 1992 with singer Susan Anway, formerly of the early 80's Boston punk band "V." The album included the early-90's college radio single,"100,000 Fireflies," which first appeared as a single on Harriet Records. When Susan Anway decided to relocate to Arizona, Stephin Merritt took up the vocal duties and remains the singer of The Magnetic Fields. In the early 90's the band released several vinyl seven-inch singles, including "Long Vermont Roads" (Harriet Recs) and "The House Of Tomorrow-EP" (Merge), which is now available on CD. The Magnetic Fields have released six full-length CD's between 1993-1999, all on Merge Records. "The Charm of the Highway Strip" (1994) is an electro-country meditation on life on the open road. "Holiday (1994) has a more euro-pop sound, with songs about escape and nightlife. "Get Lost" (1995) has a mixture of styles and moods, including the intimate cabaret sound of "With Whom to Dance?"

Our present understanding of electrical properties relies on the notions of fields and waves. A field, loosely speaking, is a mathematical "map" of forces, specifying their directions and strengths. An equation, or several of them together, can be solved for the force values at any point or succession of points within the field.
