Magnetism - general Basic concepts necessary to know for understanding of magnetic behavior of organic materials. Magnetization: Extent of a magnetic response of a material to the action of an external magnetic field. Materials by types of magnetization: Diamagnetic: Ordering magnetic particles are electron pairs or magnetic nuclei. They are ordered in one direction under external magnetic field. Materials exhibit magnetization opposing to the applied magnetic field. Magnetic field is weakened in a material. Week repelling effect to the magnetic field. Magnetization disappears when the field is removed. Example - most objects around. Wood. Paramagnetic: Ordering magnetic particles are unpaired electrons (spins). They are ordered in one direction under external magnetic field. Materials exhibit magnetization reinforcing (parallel, therefore - para) to the applied magnetic field. Magnetic field is strengthened in a material. Week attracting effect to the magnetic field. Magnetization disappears when the field is removed. Example - aluminum metal (Al). Ferromagnetic: Ordering magnetic particles are unpaired electrons (spins). They are ordered in one direction under external magnetic field. Below

Home About LRA MV-EMFC SYSTEMS EMFC/MRIFC Installations ... Contact LRA ABOUT US... Linear Research Associates formed in 1974 to design and fabricate electronic instrumentation systems for research groups at Cornell University. Since that beginning, the scope of Linear's work has grown to encompass a wide range of applied research and development projects in physics and electrical engineering. One such project, commissioned in 1991, was a request for study and recommendation of a possible solution to an EM site magnetic field problem. In response to this request, Linear Research Associates developed and installed a prototype wideband active-feedback system which reduced interfering magnetic fields by a factor of approximately 20. Not long after installation of the prototype, Linear received third-party inquiries about the system and, eventually, purchase orders for additional prototype systems. In mid-1992, Linear finalized an improved commercial design of the active-feedback system, filed for patent protection and initiated production of its current EMFC-series active magnetic field compensation product line. A series of significant performance upgrades have been implemented since that time, including the introduction of an extended range ("QDC") version for compensating slowly-varying magnetic fields due to movement of elevators, trucks, subway trains, etc.

NMR Magnet Shielding The seat of the pants guide to understanding the problems of shielding NMR magnets
One of the problems associated with working with NMR instruments is the stray magnet field surrounding the magnet. This stray magnetic field has grown to be a larger problem as the magnets had moved to higher fields and wider bores. The problems with stray magnet fields are multiple and include:
  • Small metal objects can be attracted to the magnet. These objects can move at speeds which can harm objects which get in the way. Credit Cards with magnetic strips can be erased. Watches and heart pace makers can cease operation in the magnet field. They may not start working when removed from the magnetic field. Televisions and computer monitors are distorted in the fringe magnetic fields. These items can be affected for a considerable distance in the horizontal direction and for one or two floors above and below the magnet.
It should be noted that if the NMR magnet can affect objects at these distances, then movement of magnetic objects at these distances can affect the NMR magnet. This can cause field shifts larger than the NMR system's lock can correct and/or the loss of magnet homogeneity. The problems these stray magnetic fields can cause are often made worse by the reactions of the people working in these stray fields. To my knowledge, no scientific studies have shown any harm to biological objects caused by static stray magnetic fields, even very strong fields like inside an MRI unit. However, the emotional reaction of many people to finding out they are in a stray magnetic field can be "non-linear". Often these are the same people strapping magnets on their own or their horse's body (

BASIC PRINCIPLES OF MAGNETIC THERAPY - Human Body: The Human body is unique. It consists of cells, which are a minute mass of protoplasm containing a nucleus. Protoplasm, which is synonymous to Cytoplasm, means the complex chemical compound constituting the main part of the living substance of the cell, other than the contents of the nucleus. It has now been established that each human cell is a small magnetic piece and this property, naturally, passed onto all the organs, all of them are composed of cells and tissues. And, tissues are a collection of cells or fibers of similar function forming a structure. Body fluids contain various ions such as Potassium ion (K+), Chloride ion (Cl), Phosphoric ion (PO4) Sodium ion (NA+) etc. Magnetic Therapy is said to have soothing effect on the cells, tissues and nerves, when applied to an affected part and cause to lessen the pain, stiffness, soreness or swelling. Magnetic Therapy acts: To improve circulation As a corollary of the above, increases the temperature, and

MAGNET THERAPY RESEARCH
While the use of magnets for health purposes dates back hundreds of years, there have been no real studies performed to determine the actual level of benefit until the University of Virginia published results from one of the first clinical research studies performed. This publication came out in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine with some interesting findings. Overall, the results were inconclusive although people suffering from Fibromyalgia pain did experience a reduced level of pain. Pain is measured in many different forms. However, for the purpose of this study, there were three measures used, which used the functional status reported by study participants on a standard questionnaire used nationwide for Fibromyalgia, the number of trigger points located on the body, and the level of pain. The data was comprised of 94 patients with Fibromyalgia that were divided into four separate groups randomly. The first group was given sham pads that contained magnets that were demagnetized by going through a heat process. The second group was given their usual treatment for Fibromyalgia. The two remaining groups were given active magnetic pads - one of these groups used Pad A, providing exposure to the entire body through a low, uniform static magnetic field of negative polarity, and the other group used Pad B, which had been exposed to subjects in a low static magnetic field, which varied in both polarity and spatially. All four groups were then treated and monitored for six months as the data was gathered.

37. Sev On Poetry Magnets
Four original poems.
http://www.byz.org/~sev/Creative/me/magnets/
Do you really care...?
I mean, does it matter if I really did make these poems with my poetry magnets or not? Okay, obviously, I care, since I've got this page up. I have four different plastic boxes sitting next to me as I'm writing this. Each of these boxes once contained little white magnets with words printed on them. These magnets are now on my refrigerator. O n the top of the pile are two boxes marked "(c) 1993 by Dave Kapell" . These are what I think of as the "original" brand of poetry magnets, since his were the first I saw. I have the "Magnetic Poetry 2: The sequel" and "Magnetic Romance" magnet kits, both of which I bought at Games of Berkeley. L ater, I was shopping in SF Main Library's Gift Shop, and I picked up two more boxes of word magnets. These were from "Fridge Fun" and they were the "Tabloid Talk" and the "Gay Talk" sets. All told, there are about 1500 words floating around on my fridge. A nd yes, the following poems were indeed made with these very poetry magnets. As the two different brands of magnets differ in their capitalization systems, I just lowercased everything, and made everything one font and one color. The words, however, are verbatim.
