The Longfellow range is at the northeastern end of the Appalachian Mountain system and is part of the mountain region of Maine. This zone has nine peaks over 4000ft which includes Mt Katahdin, the highest point of the state at 5,267 ft. The uplands of Maine form a high, relatively flat plateau. Aroostook potato-farming region forms the eastern part of the region while the western part is heavily forested.
Maine has more than 2,200 lakes and ponds. Some of the important lakes are Moosehead Lake, 117 sq mi (303 sq km), and Sebago Lake, 13 mi (21 km) by 10 mi (16 km).Of the more than 5,000 rivers and streams, the Penobscot, Androscoggin, Kennebec, and Saco rivers drain historically and commercially important valleys. The longest river in Maine is the St. John, but it runs for most of its length in the Canadian province of New Brunswick.

The Geography of Maine
From a geographical point-of-view, Maine is one of the most diverse states in the continential United States. It is also very, very large. To the south and east is the Atlantic Ocean, and to the northeast is the Canadian provice of New Brunswick and Quebec is to the northwest. Maine is both the largest and the northernmost state in the New England region, bordered on the west by New Hampshire. It is also the only state that borders exactly one other state. Although Alaska is the northernmost state in the United States, Maine is the northernmost state in the contiguous 48 states. Its easternmost city is Eastport, and its easternmost town is Lubec. Its largest lake is Moosehead Lake, and its highest mountain is Mt. Katahdin, which is the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. A new International Appalachian Trial starts at Mt. Katahdin and runs to Belle Isle, Newfoundland and Labrador.

HOME Maine / Geography To the south and east is the Atlantic Ocean and to the north and northeast is New Brunswick, a province of Canada. The Canadian province of Quebec is to the northwest. Maine is both the northernmost state in New England and the largest, accounting for nearly half the region's entire land area. Maine also has the distinction of being the only state to border just one other state (New Hampshire to the west). Maine is the easternmost state in the United States both in terms its extreme points and its geographic center. The municipalities of Eastport and Lubec are, respectively, the easternmost city and town in the United States. Estcourt Station is Maine's northernmost point and also the northernmost point in the New England region of the United States. (For more information see extreme points of the United States). Maine's Moosehead Lake is the largest lake wholly in New England (Lake Champlain being located between Vermont and New York). A number of other Maine lakes, such as South Twin Lake, are described by Thoreau. Mount Katahdin is both the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, which extends to Springer Mountain, Georgia, and the southern terminus of the new International Appalachian Trail which, when complete, will run to Belle Isle, Newfoundland and Labrador. Maine also has several unique geographical features. Machias Seal Island and North Rock, off its easternmost point, are claimed by both the U.S. and Canada and are within one of four areas between the two countries whose sovereignty is still in dispute, but is the only one of the disputed areas containing land. Also in this easternmost area is the Old Sow, the largest tidal whirlpool in the Western Hemisphere.

Welcome to Maine
Although it is not known for certain, Maine is probably named after the French province of Maine. Another possibility for the name "Maine" is that the people living on islands along the coast of Maine used to speak of going to the mainland as "going over to the Main." The state experiences a continental climate, much more so in the southern part of the state, with fahrenheit temperatures dipping into the 20s and 10s in the winter and 70s and 80s in the summer. From the first colony in 1607 to statehood in 1820, Maine has enjoyed a rich and proud tradition - one that continues to embody its current culture.
