Mathematical Modelling report released at ASTMH meeting
6 November, Atlanta, USA: - Mathematical modelling to support malaria control and elimination , the fifth report in the , was released on Sunday, November 6th, at the 59th annual meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH) in Atlanta, USA. The report was presented by lead author Nakul Chitnis ( Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute ) during the Malaria Eradication Research Agenda Symposium, which focused on defining key knowledge gaps and tools needed in order to achieve the ultimate goal of malaria eradication.
The report introduces mathematical modelling to the malaria community and public health decision-makers, and expands the dialogue on priority decision-making and when and how modelling can help. During his presentation, Dr. Chitnis discussed how key data obtained from mathematical modelling is being used to understand disease dynamics, devise control strategies, and inform policy development in the fight against malaria.

Jump to: navigation search Contents Areas affected by malaria (dark blue) This article is a travel topic Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal tropical disease . Four kinds of malaria parasites can infect humans: Plasmodium falciparum, P. vivax, P. ovale, and P. malariae; infection with P. falciparum, if not promptly and correctly treated, can be fatal in as little as one or two days. Competent advice from an up-to-date source of information, such as the tropical diseases department of a major hospital, is essential.
edit Transmission
According to the CDC , Malaria is transmitted in large areas of Central and South America, the island of Hispaniola (includes Haiti and the Dominican Republic), Africa, Asia (including the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia and the Middle East), and a few areas of Eastern Europe and the South Pacific. In general, the risk of contracting malaria is higher in rural areas and lower in urban areas. Often there is also a correlation to the mosquito population, with the rainy season creating stagnant pools of water where mosquitoes can breed.
edit Symptoms
Symptoms of malaria mimic common flu, with an infected person suffering fever, headache, and vomiting usually within 10 to 15 days after the mosquito bite. This means that you may become sick when you're already back at home, so be aware of that.

Malaria
  • The malaria parasite attacks the blood and causes recurring chills, fever, and sometimes jaundice and anemia. Malaria is very common throughout the world. In the United States, the main risk is to persons traveling to tropical and subtropical countries where malaria is a problem. No vaccine against malaria is available. Travelers can protect themselves by using anti-mosquito measures and by taking drugs to prevent malaria.
Malaria is a disease of the blood that is transmitted to people by infected mosquitoes. Malaria is very common throughout the world. In the United States, the main risk is to persons traveling to tropical and subtropical countries where malaria is a problem. What is the infectious agent that causes malaria? Malaria is caused by any one of four species of one-celled parasites, called Plasmodium . The parasite is spread to people by the female Anopheles mosquito, which feeds on human blood. Although four species of malaria parasites can infect humans and cause illness, only malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum is potentially life-threatening.

Nothing But Nets
The UN Foundation has been working with the UN to fight malaria for years. But it was a column that Rick Reilly wrote about malaria in Sports Illustratedand thousands of letters and donations from people like youthat led to the creation the Nothing But Nets campaign.
The reaction to Reilly's 815 words made clear that thousands of people were ready to help the million children dying unnecessarily each year of malaria. And so Nothing But Nets was born.
Already, groups as diverse as the NBA and the United Methodist Church have joined the campaign. Now, we're asking you to help spread the word about Nothing But Nets, and how easy it is to protect children from malaria with bednets.
You can save a family. Your church, school, or team can save a village. Together, we can cover Africa with lifesaving bednets.

Malaria is a confounding disease falciparum . Leading researchers at a hundred medical centers are working on antimalarial medicines, but a medicinal plant described 1,700 years ago may be the best remedy available. "In its ability to adapt and survive," says Robert Gwadz, who has studied malaria at the National Institutes of Health, near Washington, D.C., for almost 35 years, "the malaria parasite is a genius. It's smarter than we are."
Few civilizations, in all of history, have escaped the disease. Some Egyptian mummies have signs of malaria. Hippocrates documented the distinct stages of the illness; Alexander the Great likely died of it, leading to the unraveling of the Greek Empire. Malaria may have stopped the armies of both Attila the Hun and Genghis Khan.
The disease's name comes from the Italian mal'aria
