Culture
Ethnic Groups
The people of Malawi belong mainly to various Central Bantu groups. About half belong to the Chewa and Nyanja groups, known collectively as Malawi (or Maravi) before the 19th century. About 15% are Lomwe (Alomwe), who live south of Lake Chilwa. Other indigenous Malawians include the Tumbuko Tonga , and Ngonde . The Ngoni and Yao arrived in the 19th century; together they constitute about 15% of the population. There are a few thousand Europeans, mainly of British origin, including descendants of Scottish missionaries. There are also small numbers of Portuguese, Asians (mainly Indians), and persons of mixed ancestry.
Religions
Most Malawians are Christian. About 55 percent are Protestant and 20 percent Roman Catholic. Christians often mix their beliefs with local traditions. For instance, the gule wamkulu (great dance), popular in the central and southern regions, uses various masks representing ancestral spirits, people, and animals to tell stories and teach traditions. The different belief systems are not considered contradictory because each plays a role in people's daily lives. Muslims (20 percent) are concentrated in lakeshore areas. The remaining 5 percent of Malawians practice traditional indigenous beliefs through rituals, festivals, and dances.
Languages
English, an official language, is used in government and business.

Malawi Culture, Map, Flag, Tourist Places
The Great Rift Valley runs across eastern Africa like an ancient scar from the Red Sea in the north to the Zambezi valley in the south. Malawi has two rift lakes - Lake Malawi and Lake Malombe - as well as Lake Chirwa and Lake Chiuta, which lie outside the Rift system. In all, over 20% of Malawi is covered by water. The Shire River, the only outlet from Lake Malawi, joins the Zambezi river in Mozambique, thence to the Indian Ocean. In the north the Rift Valley Escarpment rises steeply from the Lake, reaching altitudes of 2500metres, even more across the Lake in the Livingstone Mountains of Tanzania. Mountainous areas in the north include the beautiful Nyika Plateau and the forested Viphya Plateau. in the south the mystical Mulanje Mountain towers through the mist. Although Malawi has not yielded much in the way of hominid remains (to date, only one jaw bone dated around 2.5 million years) it is in the region that the earliest ancestors of humans lived. The roots of language, story and communication were formed here. Before recorded history, movements of people swept through Central Africa and national boundaries were not recognised. Only with the colonial influx were borders and nations established - often with little reference to the people who lived there.

    MALAWI CULTURE
MALAWIAN CULTURES AND TRADITIONS Malawi prides itself on a mosaic of unique cultural practices and norms. The main traditional dances and rituals as well as arts and crafts found among the people act as an identifying factor for the many but united ethnic groups of the country. The dances of Malawi, for instance, have deeper meaning than what appears on the surface and, accordingly, efforts have been made to keep these intact as part of Malawi's cultural heritage and for posterity. As a way of achieving the goal of retaining the country's traditional values, the Museum of Malawi conducts a series of cultural activities in schools and public places so that those who do not have contact with village life can benefit from facilities offered by the organization. LANGUAGE
There are three major languages in Malawi: Chichewa, Chitimbuka and Chiyaoall from the Bantu language group. The most common is Chichewa, the language of the Chewa tribe. Chichewa is taught to all students in elementary school and is unofficially recognized as the national language of Malawi. Chitimbuka is the language of the Timbuka tribe largely spoken in north Malawi, although some Timbuka along the lakeshore speak Chitonga. Chiyao is spoken by the Yao tribe, who reside along the southern lakeshore. English is an official language of business, higher education and government and is widely spoken, especially in towns and major cities.

    Welcome to MalawiMissions.org!
Muli bwanji? In January, 2007, a group of eight young adults (and one young-adult-at-heart) associated with Grace Fellowship (a church in Brooklyn Park, MN) traveled to Malawi, Africa. This site was created for us to share our experiences and information about Ministry of Hope , Malawi culture, and advice for others who go there to serve and minister. As you will see, the people of Malawi had a deep impact on our hearts and lives. We encourage anyone who has the opportunity to visit Malawi - go, serve, develop relationships, and continue to support them when you return home. Also, try to implement the things you will learn there, particularly in community life. Check out the links to the right to read excerpts from our journals, and if you are planning a trip to Malawi, you will find a number of helpful resources there as well. Zikomo kwambiri!

People of Malawi Malawi Culture People Most of the people of Malawi live in rural areas and the Chewa people are the major ethnic group. The native people of Malawi have black skin and tight curly black hair. Most people live out in the country in huts with mud brick walls and thatched roofs. The traditional language spoken is Chichewa but most people who have been to school can speak English. Traditions Washing dishes Families have drying racks where dishes are placed outside in the sun to dry and show other families that they are clean and have dishes. This tradition seems to have been passed down through the generations. People of all ages love to sing and dance. They have special dances for all occasions. At some funerals they have a special dance performed. Friends and relations of the dead person wear a strip of cloth, or kambambe, around their head telling everyone that someone they care about has died. A dance called the gulewamkulu is danced to send the body into the spirit world. Young children throw a piece of charcoal into the grave or have the coffin carried over their head so they do not forget the dead person. Gathering to listen In the evenings families gather around and listen to elders telling stories. It sounds a little like a chant as the listeners all say "I agree" after every few sentences.

The traditional chalets, situated 8km north of the heart of Malawian capital, Lilongwe are made with un- baked mud bricks, pine wood planks and reeds. They reflect the cultural set up of the Kumbali cultural village. Kumbali village was established in 2007 at the Natures Gift Farm. "We saw that there was a lot that Malawi had to offer to the west from its culture, but no tourist resort was doing that," said Scot Gray Manager at the Kumbali village. The village was opened as one way of preserving the Malawian culture and at the same time preserving its natural diversity and ending poverty of people from the surrounding villages. “We all know African economics and culture are all about working with the environment, " he said.
