    Geography of Malawi
Malawi is situated in southeastern Africa. The Great Rift Valley traverses the country from north to south. In this deep trough lies Lake Malawi, the third-largest lake in Africa, comprising about 20% of Malawi's area. The Shire River flows from the south end of the lake and joins the Zambezi River 400 kilometers (250 mi.) farther south in Mozambique. East and west of the Rift Valley, the land forms high plateaus, generally between 900 and 1,200 meters (3,000-4,000 ft.) above sea level. In the north, the Nyika Uplands rise as high as 2,600 meters (8,500 ft.); south of the lake lie the Shire Highlands, with an elevation of 600-1,600 meters (2,000-5,000 ft.), rising to Mts. Zomba and Mulanje, 2,130 and 3,048 meters (7,000 and 10,000 ft.). In the extreme south, the elevation is only 60-90 meters (200-300 ft.) above sea level.

Geography Home Page Malawi Introduction Malawi Background: Established in 1891, the British protectorate of Nyasaland became the independent nation of Malawi in 1964. After three decades of one-party rule under President Hastings Kamuzu BANDA the country held multiparty elections in 1994, under a provisional constitution, which came into full effect the following year. Current President Bingu wa MUTHARIKA, elected in May 2004 after the previous president failed to amend the constitution to permit another term, has struggled to assert his authority against his predecessor, who still leads their shared political party. MATHARIKA's anti-corruption efforts have led to several high-level arrests but no convictions. Increasing corruption, population growth, increasing pressure on agricultural lands, and HIV/AIDS pose major problems for the country. Geography Malawi Location: Southern Africa, east of Zambia

    http://www.ujeni.net/pctest/parts/lake.html
The lake makes a gorgeous resort and there are dozens of beautiful beaches along the Malawi-side of the lake. Nkhata Bay, Monkey Bay, Senga Bay and Likoma Island are among the best resort spots. Snorkeling and Scuba diving are wildly popular here and many resorts offer Scuba certification at the lowest price you will ever find. See the Places to see in Malawi section to learn more about these spots.
The traditional fish rod consists of a one meter long thin stick of bamboo with a three to five meter long piece of string tied to the end. A home made hook with a worm or an insect is tied to the end of the string. The bamboo rod is bent back and released, sending the string and hook out into the water. The trick is to pull at just the right time. Give it a try when you visit the lake! Nkhata Bay and Cape Maclear both offer incredibly cheap scuba diving certification courses.
