Facts About Malawi
Malawi is the fourth poorest country in the world. It is located in south central Africa and is ravaged by diseases such as TB, Malaria, HIV and chronic malnutrition which increases the vulnerability of children to common infectious diseases.
Life expectancy at birth stands at 52 years. Infant mortality rate is 134 per 1,000 live births. In a population of 11 million nearly one million children are orphaned or homeless. Women in Malawi Suffer a double blow 1. They contribute more labour in agricultural production and domestic chores, while having less access to resources and services. They are generally the carer during long periods of suffering for their loved ones with HIV/AIDS. 2. After the death of their partner they are even more vulnerable through loss of property and livelihood. Women and girls usually become more susceptible to risk of engaging in unsafe survival strategies such as transactional sex. Despite its awful plight, Malawi is a magnificent country and its people remain happy. It is of little wonder that Malawi is called "The warm heart of Africa". Malawi Background Established in 1891, the British protectorate of Nyasaland became the independent nation of Malawi in 1964. After three decades of one-party rule under President Hastings Kamuzu BANDA the country held multiparty elections in 1994, under a provisional constitution, which came into full effect the following year. Current President Bingu wa MUTHARIKA, elected in May 2004 after the previous president failed to amend the constitution to permit another term, has struggled to assert his authority against his predecessor, who still leads their shared political party. MATHARIKA's anti-corruption efforts have led to several high-level arrests but no convictions. Increasing corruption, population growth, increasing pressure on agricultural lands, and HIV/AIDS pose major problems for the country.
