Deejay on mission to keep traditional performances alive
By THO XIN YI thoxinyi@thestar.com.my
WHILE many people either take the common dialects for granted or ignore them, Ai FM deejay Chong Keat Aun has great appreciation for them and considers them an amazing and beautiful heritage to be enjoyed and preserved.
According to Chong, folk songs, opera shows, folk doggerel, ballads, adages, and music for celebrations or funerals performed in the Chinese dialects, especially when accompanied by the traditional Chinese musical instruments, are fascinating.
The 31-year-old said his interest in culture had stimulated his passion to gather and preserve the fading dialect heritage in the performing arts.
"As far as I know, nobody is actually preserving the vocal heritage now, but someone must do it to protect these voices from disappearing," he said.
Chong's weekly radio programme Xiang Yin Kao Gu: Si Xiang Qi (loosely translated as "Exploration studies on native tongues: let the rumination begin") is aired every Thursday at 10pm, centres on the folk artistes rendering traditional music.

Malaysia : Culture
Malaysia reflects different cultural traditions, including those of China, India, the Middle East, Europe, and the entire Malay Archipelago. Early Malay empires absorbed Indian influences, such as Hindu epics and the Sanskrit language. The kingdom of Malacca, centered in the present-day state of Melaka, developed as an Islamic state, or sultanate, in the 1400s. Later, new cultural influences from Europe and China mixed with Hindu and Islamic traditions. A collective but distinctively Malay cultural pattern has emerged out of all these influences, with artistic expressions in literature, music, dance, and art forms. Ipoh Johar Kangar Kedah ... Vacation Still remember that my school organized a field trip last year to Malaysia, to learn more about the Malaysian culture Malaysia , even though they are right next to each other. Malaysia has no much more land and the houses are very different . They seem to lead a much simpler life there. A local guide took us to explore the rocky seashore. There were hermit crabs, snails and mudskippers. We also saw mangrove roots, which are called pencil roots, sticking out of the water to absorb oxygen . I was sad to see how polluted the entire area was. When people litter, they do not realize the harm it does to the marine plants and animals. We also visited a Malay village and I noticed that the girls were dressed differently, wearing headscarves and less revealing attire. This is because Malaysia is an Islamic country. At the local school , we ate Malay food with our hands! It was fun interacting with the students. Their hospitality was overwhelming. It was definitely a great experience for me!

Essentials Having had an interesting past and being a part of the international spice route many hundreds of years ago, Malaysia has turned into a mosaic of cultures. Everything from its people to its architecture reflect a colourful heritage and an amalgamated culture. To understand Malaysian culture, you must first get to know its people. DISCOVER A LAND OF INTRIGUING DIVERSITY Malays, Chinese, Indians and many other ethnic groups have lived together in Malaysia for generations. All these cultures have influenced each other, creating a truly Malaysian culture. The largest ethnic groups in Malaysia are the Malays, Chinese and Indians. In Sabah and Sarawak, there are a myriad of indigenous ethnic groups with their own unique culture and heritage. MALAY
    CHINESE
The second largest ethnic group, the Malaysian Chinese form about 25% of the population. Mostly descendants of Chinese immigrants during the 19th century, the Chinese are known for their diligence and keen business sense. The three sub-groups who speak a different dialect of the Chinese language are the Hokkien who live predominantly on the northern island of Penang; the Cantonese who live predominantly in the capital city Kuala Lumpur; and the Mandarin-speaking group who live predominantly in the southern state of Johor. INDIAN
The smallest of three main ethnic groups, the Malaysian Indians form about 10% of the population. Most are descendants of Tamil-speaking South Indian immigrants who came to the country during the British colonial rule. Lured by the prospect of breaking out of the Indian caste system, they came to Malaysia to build a better life. Predominantly Hindus, they brought with them their colourful culture such as ornate temples, spicy cuisine and exquisite sarees.

People Malaysia is a multicultural society. While Malays and other indigenous minorities make up a 69% majority, there are also 21% Chinese (especially visible in the cities), 8% Indian and a miscellaneous grouping of 10% "others", many of them tribes from the jungles of East Malaysia. There is hence also a profusion of faiths and religions, with Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism, Sikhism and even shamanism on the map. Some Malaysians can be very extroverted and might talk to you uninvited but most Malaysians are shy at heart and are careful not to offend others, especially tourists. However, Malaysians are very friendly when approached and will usually go out of their way to help tourists find their way around if possible.
Culture
Malaysia is a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multilingual society, consisting of 65% Malays and other indigenous tribes, 25% Chinese, 7% Indians. The Malays, which form the largest community, are all Muslims since one has to be Muslim to be legally Malay under Malaysian law. The Malays play a dominant role politically and are included in a grouping identified as bumiputra. Their native language is Malay (Bahasa Melayu). Bahasa Malaysia which is largely similar to Bahasa Melayu in most practical terms is the national language of the country.
In the past, Malay was written widely in Jawi, a script based on Arabic. Over time, romanized script overtook Jawi as the dominant script. This was largely due to the influence of the colonial education system which taught children in romanised writing rather than in Arabic script.

Malaysia Culture
Malaysia culture is a result of different cultures meeting and mixing in Malaysia since the dawning of its history. More than a millennium ago a Malay kingdom in Bujang Valley received mongers from south and east Asia, particularly from India and China. Along with their precious trades, they also brought with them their religious beliefs. Ten centuries later, bargainers from Arabia made it to Malacca and imparted Islam principles and practices to them. When the Portuguese finally made it to the country the whole empire that welcomed them was far more universally joint than their own. The early immigrants brought wealth to Malaysia as well as their own unique cultural heritages and religions and this diversity in culture has remained in place through the centuries up until today. The most significant of these is the ancient Malayan culture and the civilization brought about by their two most outstanding merchandising partners throughout the time, the Chinese and the Indians. These groups are linked together by a range of indigenous tribes and many of these tribes are scattered in the forests and coastal regions of Borneo. Despite the fact that each of these cultures have smartly preserved its customs and their way of living, they have also blended together to create a cultural mosaic that would have a lasting charm in Malaysia.
