Bahasa Malaysia in History I have often wondered: What did a student learn from his Malay text book one hundred years ago? Shall we review Bustanul-Katibin written by the Malay scholar, Raja Haji Ali?
It was as time before the existence of Bahasa Malaysia in history.English scholar William Marsden published his Malay dictionary in 1812 which came along with a great portion discussing Malay grammar. So Raja Haji Ali's Bustanul-Katibin of 1857, is strictly speaking not the first Malay grammar book. Rather, it is the first Malay grammar book written by a Malay scholar.
The full name of this book is Bustanul-Katibina Lis Subyanil Mutaalamin or, Kitab Perkebunan Jurutulis Bagi Kanak-kanak yang Hendak Menuntut Belajar Akan Dia. Here's another translation: Kitab yang Ringkas bagi Orang yang Hendak Mengenal segala Huruf Melayu dan Suratannya.
Out of a total of 31 chapters, the first 10 chapters are devoted to the Jawi spelling system. The author discusses Arabic letters that can, cannot or have been given new values in the Malay language. Then he explained the phonic system. Wow...there is one whole chapter devoted to only one letter, alif.
Next section is the classification of words in 4 chapters. Bear in mind that Raja Ali, well educated in the Arabic language, was using the Arabic grammar system to explain the Malay language. Here it goes briefly: words are classified into nouns, verbs and particles.

In 1826, the British settlements of Malacca, Penang, and Singapore were combined to form the Colony of the Straits Settlements. From these strongholds, in the 19th and early 20th centuries the British established protectorates over the Malay sultanates on the peninsula. Four of these states were consolidated in 1895 as the Federated Malay States.
During British control, a well-ordered system of public administration was established, public services were extended, and large-scale rubber and tin production was developed. This control was interrupted by the Japanese invasion and occupation from 1941 to 1945 during World War II.
Popular sentiment for independence swelled during and after the war and, in 1957, the Federation of Malaya, established from the British-ruled territories of peninsular Malaysia in 1948, negotiated independence from the United Kingdom under the leadership of Tunku Abdul Rahman, who became the first prime minister. The British colonies of Singapore, Sarawak, and Sabah (called North Borneo) joined together with the Federation to form Malaysia on September 16, 1963.
Singapore left the Federation on August 9, 1965, and became an independent republic. Neighboring Indonesia objected to the formation of Malaysia and pursued a program of economic, political, diplomatic, and military "confrontation" against the new country, which ended only after the fall of Indonesia's President Sukarno in 1966.

    Malaysia History
    PRE-HISTORIC MALAYSIA
Scientists have found archaeological evidence of human inhabitants in the Niah Caves in Sarawak from about 40,000 years ago. The earliest evidence of inhabitants on the Malay Peninsula that has been found is from about 10,000 years ago. Neolithic culture was well established by 2500-1500 BC. Most scholars believe the earliest settlers on the Malay Peninsula came overland from southern China in small groups over a period of thousands of years. These early inhabitants became the ancestors of the Orang Asli.During the 1000's B.C., new groups of migrants who spoke a language related to Malay came to Malaysia.
    Ancient Malaysia: 35,000 BC - 100 BC
Historians often speak of Malaysia's ancient past as something "shrouded in mystery," a kind of black hole in Asian history. The truth is that there is not much archeological evidence or written records from ancient Malaysia; but it is likely that this situation will change. Many suspect that there are more prehistoric archeological sites along the coasts and in the jungles and hills, but given Malaysia's riotous vegetation it will take time to find them. We do know that homo sapiens have been in Malaysia for a long time. The oldest known evidence of human habitation is a skull from the Niah Caves in Sarawak dating from 35,000 years before Christ.
On the peninsula, stone age tools and implements from about 10,000 BC have been found, and some archeologists suggest that they were left there by the predecessors of the Negrito aborigines - one of the earliest groups to inhabit the peninsula. We also know that about 2,500 years before Christ a much more technologically advanced group migrated to the peninsula from China. Called the Proto-Malays, they were seafarers and farmers, and their advances into the peninsula forced the Negritos into the hills and jungles. History's periodic waves of cultural evolution, however, soon created another group, the Deutero-Malays. They were a combination of many peoples - Indians, Chinese, Siamese, Arabs, and Proto-Malays - and they had risen by mastering the use of iron. Combined with the peoples of Indonesia, the Deutero-Malays formed the racial basis for the group which today we simply call the Malay.

Its warm tropical climate and abundant natural blessings made it a congenial destination for immigrants as early as 5,000 years ago when the ancestors of the Orang Asli, the indigenous peoples of Peninsular Malaysia, settle here, probably the pioneers of a general movement from China and Tibet. They were followed by the Malays, who brought with them skills in farming and the use of metals. Around the first century BC, strong trading links were established with China and India, and these had a major impact on the culture, language and social customs of the country. Evidence of a Hindu-Buddhist period in the history of Malaysia can today be found in the temple sites of the Bujang Valley and Merbok Estuary in Kedah in the north west of Peninsular Malaysia, near the Thai border. The spread of Islam, introduced by Arab and Indian traders, brought the Hindu-Buddhist era to an end by the 13th century. With the conversion of the Malay-Hindu rulers of the Melaka Sultanate (the Malay kingdom which ruled both side of the Straits of Malaka for over a hundred years),, Islam was established as the religion of the Malays, and had profound effect on Malay society.

(For early history of West Malaysia, see Malay Peninsula ; for history of East Malaysia, see Sabah and Sarawak .) When the Portuguese captured Malacca (1511), its sultan fled first to Pahang and then to Johor and the Riau Archipelago. One of his sons became the first sultan of Perak. From both Johor and Aceh in Sumatra unsuccessful attacks were made on Malacca. Aceh and Johor also fought each other. The main issue in these struggles was control of trade through the Strait of Malacca. Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu, north of Malacca, became nominal subjects of Siam. In the early 17th cent. the Dutch established trading bases in Southeast Asia. By 1619 they had established themselves in Batavia (Jakarta), and in 1641, allied with Johor, they captured Malacca after a six-month siege. Another power entered the complicated Malayan picture in the late 17th cent. when the Bugis from Sulawesi, a Malay people economically pressured by the Dutch, began settling in the area of Selangor on the west coast of the peninsula, where they traded in tin. The Bugis captured Johor and Riau in 1721 and, with a few interruptions, maintained control there for about a century, although the Johor sultanate was permitted to remain. The Bugis were also active in Perak and Kedah. Earlier, in the 15th and 16th cent., another Malay people, the Minangkabaus from Sumatra, had peacefully settled inland from Malacca. Their settlements eventually became the state of Negeri Sembilan.

By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Malaysia has historically been the meeting place of vastly different cultures, religions, and people. People from all over the world have come to settle in Malaysia, each having brought something new to the country. Some, of course, took things away from Malaysia.
Early Malaysian history begins with the migration of Chinese people onto the Malaysian peninsula about 10,000 years ago. For thousands of years, the people of Malaysia lived somewhat isolated from the rest of the world. In 1 AD, two unrelated events would dramatically change Malaysia and begin bringing people from all over the world to Malaysia's shores.
At the time, India was getting gold and other metals from the Roman Empire and China. Around 1 AD, the Chinese Huns cut off the land route between India and China and the Roman emperor Vespasian ended shipments of gold to India. Desperate to resume the importation of gold and other metals, India sent huge ships with hundreds of men to Southeast Asiaincluding Malaysiato find other sources. But when the Indians arrived on the Malay Peninsula, they didn't find goldthey found tin. While not as valuable as gold, tin provided plenty of wealth to the new Indian settlers.

The Hindu Kingdoms ruled the Malays world from 100 BC to 1400 AD and reached its peak in the Srivijaya civilisation basedin Sumatra. During this time, Hindu culture were imported from India and archaelogical findings in Bujang Valley in the state of Kedah showed that there were ruins of an ancient Hindu Kingdom dating back to the year 300 AD. You will be ableto see some of the relics on display at Bujang Valley Archaeological Museum.

The arrival of Islam in the 10th century led to the conversion of the Malay and Indonesian world. It reached its golden era from 1400 AD to 1511 AD during the reign of the sultanates in Malacca. Islamic culture and trading of goods prospered during this time. The European colonial powers came into this region to conquer the land for its rich spices, minerals and as army posts in South East Asia. The Portuguese captured Malacca in 1511 followed by the Dutch and finally the British. During the time of British reign, many Chinese and Indians were brought from Southern China and Southern India to work in the tin mines and rubber plantation.
