Humans lived in the area of present-day Malaysia as long as 40,000 years ago. The early history of the area is obscure because there are few local documents and almost no archaeological remains, especially any with inscriptions. According to Chinese sources, however, early contacts were made with China. Traders also spread Hindu influences from India, which affected people’s customs and the rituals of local rulers. Peninsular Malaysia was not unified politically but was split into small kingdoms and subdivided into chiefdoms defined by river valleys. Political rule of Borneo was even more fragmented. Some of the mainland kingdoms may have been subject to a degree of control by larger empires centered in Cambodia or Java, such as Majapahit. About AD 1400 Parameswara, a Sumatran prince, founded the kingdom of Malacca on the site of present-day Melaka. He was converted to Islam, which traders from India had already brought to the area, and Malacca became a center for the further spread of the Muslim faith. Malacca prospered and expanded its influence into most of the Malay Archipelago, but in 1511 it was conquered by the Portuguese under Afonso de Albuquerque. The Portuguese in Malacca survived constant fighting with neighboring Johor, Aceh in Sumatra, and other states. In 1641, however, Malacca fell to the Dutch, who replaced the Portuguese as the leading European trading power in the region. Like their predecessors, the Dutch were frequently at war with neighboring kingdoms and succeeded in extending their influence to parts of Johor. In this period the northern Malay kingdoms—Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu—were frequently under the influence of Siam (present-day Thailand).

HISTORY OF MALAYSIA
PRE-HISTORIC MALAYSIA
Scientists have found archaeological evidence of human inhabitants in the Niah Caves in Sarawak from about 40,000 years ago. The earliest evidence of inhabitants on the Malay Peninsula that has been found is from about 10,000 years ago. Neolithic culture was well established by 2500-1500 BC. Most scholars believe the earliest settlers on the Malay Peninsula came overland from southern China in small groups over a period of thousands of years. These early inhabitants became the ancestors of the Orang Asli. During the 1000's B.C., new groups of migrants who spoke a language related to Malay came to Malaysia. The ancestors of these people had traveled by sea from south China to Taiwan, and later from Taiwan to Borneo and the Philippines. These people became the ancestors of the Malays and the Orang Laut. The newcomers settled mainly in the coastal areas of the peninsula. Small Malayan kingdoms existed in the 2nd or 3rd centuries AD, when adventurers from India arrived and initiated more than 1,000 years of Indian influence. About A.D. 1400, a group of Malay-speaking migrants came to the Malay Peninsula from Srivijaya, a trading kingdom on the island of Sumatra (now part of Indonesia). Led by a Sumatran prince called Paramesvara, these newly arrived immigrants established a commercial kingdom called

The arrival of Europeans in Malaysia brought a dramatic change to the country. In 1511, the Portuguese captured Malaka and the rulers of the Melaka Sultanate fled south to Johor where they tried to establish a new kingdom. They were resisted not only by the Europeans but by the Acehnese, Minangkabau and the Bugis, resulting in the sovereign units of the present-day states of Peninsular Malaysia. The Portuguese were in turn defeated in 1641 by the Dutch, who colonized Melaka until the advent of the British in the Dutch exerted any profound influence on Malay society. The British acquired Melaka from the Dutch in 1824 in exchange for Bencoolen in Sumatra. From their new bases in Malaka, Penang and Singapore, collectively known as the Straits settlements, the British, through their influence and power, began the process of political intergration of the Malay states of Peninsular Malaysia.
After World War II and the Japanese occupation from 1941-45, the British created the Malayan Union 1946.This was abandoned in 1948 and the Federation of Malaya emerged in its place. The Federation gained its independence from Britain on

In the early 17th century the Dutch established trading bases in Southeast Asia. The British role on the peninsula began in 1786 when Francis Light of the British East India Company, searching for a site for trade and a naval base, obtained the cession of the island of Pinang from the Sultan of Kedah. In 1791 the British agreed to make annual payments to the Sultan, and in 1800, the Sultan ceded Province Wellesley on the mainland. In 1819 the British founded Singapore and in 1824 they formally acquired Malacca from the Dutch. A joint administration was formed for Pinang, Malacca and Singapore, which became known as the Straits Settlements. British in Malaya
In the late 19th century, a number of events led Great Britain to play a more direct part in the affairs of the peninsula. There was conflict between Chinese settlers, who worked in the tin mines, and Malays; there were civil wars among the Malays; and there was an increase in piracy in the western part of the peninsula. Merchants asked the British to restore order.

Government
Malaysia is a federation of 13 states: Johore, Kedah, Kelantan, Malacca, Negri Sembilan, Pahang, Penang, Perak, Perlis, Sabah, Sarawak, Selangor, and Trengganu, plus the capital city, Kuala Lumpur , and the island of Labuan , which are separate federal territories. Each state has its own constitution, head of state, and elected assembly, led by a chief minister and cabinet, and legislates on matters outside the federal parliament's sphere. Under the 1957 constitution, a monarch is elected for five-year terms by, and from among the hereditary rulers of Johore, Kedah, Kelantan, Negri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Selangor, and Trengganu. The paramount ruler's powers are similar to those of the British monarch, including discretion in the appointment of a prime minister and in granting a dissolution of parliament. Generally, the monarch acts on the advice of the prime minister and cabinet, who wield effective power. The two-chamber federal legislature or parliament is composed of a 70-member upper house or senate, the Dewan Negara, comprising 40 members nominated by the head of state, four from the two federal territories, and two members elected by each of the 13 state assemblies for six-year terms, and a house of representatives, the Dewan Rakyat, whose 192 members are elected for five-year terms from single-member constituencies by universal suffrage. The senate can only delay bills already approved by the dominant house of representatives, whose majority party or coalition provides the prime minister, who governs with a cabinet selected from parliament.

    Malaysia History
History of Malaysia has a rich historical background and the path of Malaysia history has been influenced by its strategic position, its tropical climate, the surrounding environment and the rule of the north-east and south-west monsoons. In the north, Kedah is reputed to be the most ancient State in the country. Archaeological findings at Bujang Valley furnish evidence of a Hindu-Buddhist civilization that dates back to 300 AD. It has prospered as an important centre of trade and commerce until the 13th century and it diminished in importance. History of Malaysia can be categorised in four successive phases of outside influence, followed by the final declarartion of Malay independence.
    • The first phase witnesses the domination of Hindu culture imported from India, which reached its peak in the great Srivijaya civilisation based in Sumatra, which ruled most of the Malay world from the 7th to the 14th centuries. With the arrival of Islam the second phase started, which began in the 10th century, and led to the conversion of most of the Malay-Indonesian world and the breakup of the Srivijayan empire into many smaller sultanates, the most prominent of which was the Melaka (Malacca). Islamic culture has had a profound influence on the Malay people, but has also been influenced by them.

Archaeological findings indicate that civilisation in Peninsular Malaysia (Tanah Melayu) dates back to in the New Stone Age (Neolithic Period). The Hoanbinhin civilisation thrived between 2000 BC and 1500 BC. Handmade metal artifacts used by the Proto-Malays and Deutero-Malays have been found in Pahang, Perak and the coast of Selangor. Following the fall of the Malacca Suttarate, new independent states emerged throughtout the Peninsula, beginning with Johore in the mid-17th century; Negeri Sembilan and Terengganu in the early 18th century; Kelantan in 1764; Selangor in 1766; Perlis in 1843; Pahang in 1881 and Johore in 1885. By the end of the 19th century, there were 9 Sultans in power. The mid 18th century saw British intervention in the Malay Peninsula as free traders established trade ties with the Malay Sultans. They eventually set up trading ports and took over Pulau Pinang (1786) and Singapore (1819). With the ratification of the Anglo-Dutch Treaty in 1924, the British tightened their grip on the Peninsula. They established the Straits Settlements in 1826; the Federated Malay States in 1896; and acquired Kedah, Perlis and Kelantan from the Siamese through the Bangkok Agreement of 1909. The states of Johore and Terengganu were coerced to accept the services of British advisers in 1914 and 1919 respectively. The British introduced an export-based economic system that superseded trading and self-sufficiency. This eventually led to a large influx of immigrant workers from China and India. By the dawn of the 20th century, the foundations had been laid for the present societal structure.

A brief overview of the Malaysia history. In short a good overview from precolonial past until the recent malaysian history.
    http://www.pulau-pangkor.com/Malaysia-history.html
    Malaysia history
    Pre colonial area
Malaysia history starts in the first century AD. Two events helped stimulate Malaysia's emergence in international trade in the ancient world. At that time, India had two principal sources of gold and other metals: the Roman Empire and China. The overland route from China was cut by marauding Huns. At about the same time, the Roman Emperor Vespasian cut off shipments of gold to India.
Malacca in colonial times As a result, India sent large and seaworthy ships, with crews reported to have numbered in the hundreds, to Southeast Asia, including the Malay Peninsula, to seek alternative sources. The Malay Peninsula must have been of some significance. Ptolemy recorded its presence in his map as the 'Chersonesus Aureus'. In the century that followed the Malays discovered rich tin deposits. This became of great significance in Indian Ocean trade, and the region prospered. The Malays benefited from the maritime trade and the ports flourished. Malay ports served as centers for trade between these trading centers in India, South East Asia and China. The traders brought with them the Hindu-Buddhist culture which became of great influence on the local people. The early Buddhist Malay kingdom of Srivijaya, based at what is now Palembang, Sumatra, dominated much of the Malay Peninsula from the 9th to the 13th centuries AD. The powerful Hindu kingdom of Majapahit, based on Java, ruled the Malay Peninsula in the 14th century. Arrival of Muslim traders resulted in the conversion of many Malays to Islam. That process started in the beginning of the early 14th century and accelerated further with the establishment of the Sultanate of Malacca in the 15th century.
