Maldives Culture
I can say that Maldives culture is rich as other countries. We have found in different scripts from various countries that Maldives have been inhabited for more than three thousand years.
All of them found us as an important trade route. They used to anchor their ships and rest here for a while before they head to their final destination.
We were almost visited by people from all over the world. Mostly from Africa, Middle east and from European countries.
These people have a left a strong influence on the people. Also I found that our people have practiced Buddhism as our religion in those days. And there is a huge cultural influence that I notice from other countries too. Like Bodu Beru (A cultural dance) which I have seen very similar type of dance from India and some African countries through Geographic Channel and other media.

People
The population of Maldives has increased rapidly during the last few decades. However with a population of nearly 270,000 the country still remains one of the smallest indepent nations in Asia. About a quarter of the population is resident in Male’ the capital. Outside Male’ the largest population are in Hithadhoo in Addu Atoll, Fuamulah and Kulhudhufushi in Haa Dhaalu Atoll with 9,640, 7243 and 6,354 respectively. The rest is dispersed sparsely in the rest of the 200 inhabited islands. Women
Women have always had an important role in the family and community. In the early history of Maldives, it was not uncommon to have a woman as a Sultana or ruler and it has been suggested that the society was once a matriarchy.
In today’s society women hold strong positions in government and business. A large percentage of government employees are women. The male female ratio of enrolment and completion of education to secondary school standards remains equivalent. Women serve in the cabinet and the Parliament. Family Life
The close-knit island communities practice mutual aid to survive difficult circumstances. A system of extended families provide a safety net for members of a family going through a difficult period. In addition to the parents other members of the family also contribute in the care of children. Traditionally men go out fishing during the day and women are responsible to look after the affairs of the family and vary often the community. This remains so even today in smaller island communities.

Ethnicity
The origins of the Maldivian people are shrouded in mystery. The First settlers may well have been from Sri Lanka and Southern India. Some say Aryans, who sailed in their reed boats from Lothal in the Indus Valley about 4,000 years ago, probably followed them. Archeological evidence suggests the existence Hinduism and Buddhism before the country embraced Islam in 1153 A.D.Not surprisingly, the faces of today's Maldivian display the features of various faces that inhabit the lands around the Indian Ocean shipping and maritime routes, the Maldives has long been a melting pot for African, Arab and South East Asian mariners. Top of page
Language
The language of the Maldivians is Dhivehi, a language which is placed in the Indro-Indian group of languages. Dhivehi with its roots in Sanskrit and according to some researchers Elu, an ancient form of Sinhala, (spoken in Sri Lanka), is strongly influenced by the major languages of the region. The language has been influenced heavily from Arabic since the advent of the Islam in 1153 and English in more recent times, especially since the introduction of English as a medium of education in the early 1960s.
Given the wide dispersion of islands it is not surprising that the vocabulary and pronunciation vary from atoll to atoll, with the difference being more significant in the dialects spoken in the southernmost atolls.

The culture of the Maldives is influenced by different visitors who arrived in Maldives throughout the times. However, acting as a melting point the Maldives assimilated these influences and has created a unique cultural identity. Archaeological evidence suggests the existence Hinduism and Buddhism before the country embraced Islam in 1153 A.D. Since then, Islam is a way of life for Maldivians. Islam is now the state religion and it is a stipulation of the Maldivian law, which is based on the Islamic Sharia that all citizens of the country be Muslims. Today, the main events and festivals of Maldivian life follow the Muslim (lunar) Calendar. From infancy children are taught the Arabic alphabet. Religious education is provided both at home and at school. Islam is part of the school curriculum and is taught concurrently with other subjects. The golden dome of the Islamic centre dominates the skyline of Male’ whether first viewed by air or from sea. This imposing mosque, said to be one of the most beautiful mosques in Asia, was inaugurated in 1984 – a result of the commitment of the government to uphold and strengthen the character of the nation. Maldives Culture
Located at a crossroads of ancient trade routes in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives have been influenced by different seafaring visitors who visited this tropical paradise over the centuries.
Indian, Sri Lankan, Arabian, Persian, Indonesian, Malaysian, and African travellers have all contributed to the rich Maldivian cultural identity.
Visitors can experience part of this wonderful culture in several ways:
Bodu Beru Cultural Show
The Bodu Beru (or big drum) performance is the best-known form of traditional music and dance practiced in the Maldives. Both men and women participate in this dance, and visitors can attend regularly scheduled performances. The influences of east Africa, southern India, the Arab world, as well as Malaysia and Indonesia can be heard in Maldivian music. Check with your hotel or resort for bookings.
Festivals And Holidays
The Maldivians love celebrating, and if you happen to be taking your Maldives holidays at the right time of the year, you can witness the parades and marches associated with Independence Day on July 26 or Republic Day on November 11. Most religious festivals are based on the Muslim calendar.
Maldives Cuisine
Fish, in particular tuna, has always been the most prominent food in the diet of the Maldives. Travelers introduced seasonings and vegetables over time and Maldivian cuisine now comprises Arabic, Indian, Sri Lanka and Oriental tastes blended into a unique cuisine. The cafés are the best place to savour the local tastes.

Social Structure
Maldives was a caste society well into the 1920s. Modernization efforts however, have helped make Maldives more homogeneous in the early 1990s. Traditionally, a significant gap has existed between the elite living on Male and the remainder of the population inhabiting the outer islandsthose atolls distant from Male. President Gayoom's development philosophy has centered on decreasing this gap by raising the standard of living among the 75 percent of Maldivians who live in the outer atolls as well as making Maldives more self-sufficient. Fortunately, social tensions that might have affected these two distinct societies were lessened by the isolation of the outer islands. The geographical advantage of having many islands, for example, has enabled Maldives to limit the impact of tourism to special resorts.

It is believed that the islands were populated by people from Sri Lanka and South India who were later followed by the Aryans from the hotbed of the Indus valley. The early religions of these people included Hinduism and Bhuddism. All religious beliefs were dropped in favour of Islam way back in 1153 and today the whole population are Sunni Muslims. Islam has played a huge part in the lives of the people of the Maldive islands. The religious calendar of the community is strictly followed with religious education and Arabic being taught in the local schools curriculum. The communities of the Maldives survive difficult times by following mutual self help programs. Extended families provide safety nets for those experiencing difficult times. Maldivians have their own unique characteristics being a community brought together by a common history, the Dhivehi language which everyone speaks and Islam whose teachings they all follow very strictly. English is also spoken by a large number of islanders so visitors to the islands should not fear that they will not be able to communicate with the locals when visiting the Paradise islands of the Maldives.
