When Senegal withdrew after only a few months, what formerly made up the Sudanese Republic was renamed Mali. Rule by dictatorship was brought to a close in 1991 with a transitional government and in 1992 when Mali's first democratic presidential election was held. After his reelection in 1997, President Alpha KONARE continued to push through political and economic reforms and to fight corruption. In keeping with Mali's two-term constitutional limit, he stepped down in 2002 and was succeeded by Amadou TOURE. Mali's territory encompasses three natural zones: the southern cultivated Sudanese zone, central semiarid Sahelian zone, and northern arid Saharan zone. The terrain is primarily savanna in the south and flat to rolling plains or high plateau (200–500 meters in elevation) in the north. There are rugged hills in the northeast, with elevations of up to 1,000 meters. Desert or semi-desert covers about 65 percent of the country’s area. The Niger River creates a large and fertile inland delta as it arcs northeast through Mali from Guinea before turning south and eventually emptying into the Gulf of Guinea.

The name of a modern stateThe Republic of Mali.
    Where is Mali?
Mali is on the continent of Africa.

A continent is a landmass.  Africa is one of seven continents.  Mali is located in West Africa. Mali is in the Tropics. The Tropics of the Northern Hemisphere lie between the equator0° latitudeand the Tropic of Cancer23½° north latitude.  Mali is a tropical country, which suggests that it is hot.  Why is it so hot?
    • Because the sun's rays are more directly overhead, thus very intense over much of the year.
    • Because there is little cloud cover most of the year.
The sun passes directly overhead on two days each year. Mali stretches across the Sahel and the Sahara. Sahara means "desert" in the Arabic language; Sahel means "shore."  Both zones stretch all the way across Africa.  The Sahel, with its short grasses and scrubby bushes, is the shore of the desertthe shore of a "sea of sand."  Mali is located partly in the Sahel, although the most productive part is in the grasslands south of the Sahel. Ancient Mali stretched north into the desert and south through the short and tall grasslands to the edge of the forest zone. Mali is landlocked.

    Mali Geography
An interesting aspect of Mali geography is that the entire country is situated on a plateau. The geographical position of Mali upon a tableland gives it a very flat surface. There is a narrow coastal plain bordering plain along the banks of the River Niger. The southern part of Mali has a hilly terrain.
The Southern part of Mali is flanked by the following landscapes:
    • The Bandiagara Plateau
    • The Fouta Djallon
    • The Mountains of Hombori
The Niger River in the Fouta Djallon region is the main source of water for Mali. Water from the Niger River is used for drinking purpose, irrigation and industrial use.
Mali lies near the Tropic of Cancer. The country thus experiences tropical climate. The winters in Mali are dry while the summers are very hot and humid. Mali has a distinct rainy season. The torrential downpours wash away the soil nutrients causing land erosion. Rain falls heavily in some places of the country which leads to occasional flood.
The four main rivers of Mali are the Niger, Bafing, Bakaye and the Senegal.
