      Malnutrition (Inpatient Care) Care Guide
      • Malnutrition Malnutrition Discharge Care Malnutrition Inpatient Care En Espanol Malnutrition (mal-noo-TRISH-un) occurs when you do not get enough calories or nutrients to keep you healthy. Nutrients are protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. Malnutrition may make your body weak. It may cause health problems such as trouble fighting infections and healing. Malnutrition may be caused by not eating enough of the right food or by having certain health conditions.
Malnutrition usually develops in stages over a long period of time. Signs and symptoms may not appear until the later stages of malnutrition. Some signs and symptoms of malnutrition are tiredness, weakness and weight loss. Other signs and symptoms are slow or no growth in children, slow wound healing, and hair and skin changes. The treatment for malnutrition depends on the cause. You may need to increase calories in your diet by eating more food. You may also need to eat or drink a nutrition supplement or take vitamins and minerals. Your caregiver may treat you with medicines if you have a health problem that is causing your malnutrition.
      CARE AGREEMENT:
You have the right to help plan your care. To help with this plan, you must learn about your health condition and how it may be treated. You can then discuss treatment options with your caregivers. Work with them to decide what care may be used to treat you. You always have the right to refuse treatment.

Malnutrition
Individuals at risk for malnutrition
The single most important factor that leads to malnourishment is poverty. Vast numbers of people who live in less-developed countries of the world either do not get enough to eat or do not eat the correct foods. Those who are most at risk of malnutrition where conditions of poverty exist are infants, children, pregnant women, and the elderly. Malnutrition is not restricted to less-developed nations, however. Even countries with high standards of living, such as the United States, have their share of poor people who are underfed or poorly fed and may develop malnutrition. According to some estimates, at least 20 million Americans go hungry periodically within any given month. Throughout the world, the death toll from malnutrition caused by hunger is estimated to range from 40,000 to 50,000 people a day. An additional 450 million to 1.3 billion people face the prospect of starvation from their limited food supplies.
Nutritional deficiency diseases
The human body requires a wide range of nutrients in order to remain healthy, grow normally, and develop properly. These nutrients include carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Other substances, such as water and fiber, have no nutritional value but are needed to maintain normal body functions.

Family physicians, managed care organizations and health planners are becoming increasingly aware of the value of good nutrition in the prevention and treatment of disease. Our focus as a health care system will shift from individual disease-oriented office visits to concern for maintaining and improving the health of our citizens. Nutrition education, nutrition screening for the elderly and the therapeutic use of medical foods will become more important to practicing physicians and family practice educators. The American Academy of Family Physicians, in partnership with the American Dietetic Association and the National Council on Aging, has promoted the Nutrition Screening Initiative (NSI). The NSI has succeeded in raising the level of awareness of physicians, politicians and the public to the importance of nutrition in the elderly. The NSI commissioned a study by the Barents Group to estimate the cost savings that could be achieved if our elderly citizens were systematically screened for nutritional deficiency. The study documented compelling evidence that older patients who are admitted to the hospital in a compromised nutritional state had longer lengths of stay and increased rates of complications than well-nourished patients. Moreover, the investigators estimated that the total cost of poor nutrition for Medicare over the next six years would be $1.3 billion, primarily in increased hospital costs.

The prevalence of underweight children in India is among the highest in the world, and is nearly double that of Sub-Saharan Africa with dire consequences for mobility, mortality, productivity and economic growth. The UN estimates that 2.1 million Indian children die before reaching the age of 5 every year – four every minute - mostly from preventable illnesses such as diarrhea, typhoid malaria measles and pneumonia . Every day, 1,000 Indian children die because of diarrhea alone. According to the 1991 census of India, it has around 150 million children, constituting 17.5% of India's population, who are below the age of 6 years.

    Child malnutrition in India
    Putting the smallest first
Why India makes a poor fist of feeding the young, and how it could do better
Gothekar pada Proper food is needed too VISHAL, the son of a farm labourer in the west Indian state of Maharashtra, is almost four. He should weigh around 16kg (35lb). But scooping him up from the floor costs his nursery teacher, a frail woman in a faded sari, little effort. She slips Vishal’s scrawny legs through two holes cut in the corners of a cloth sack, which she hooks to a weighing scale. The needle stops at just over 10kg—what a healthily plump one-year-old should weigh. The teacher nods and puts Vishal back on the floor, where he sits listlessly before a jigsaw puzzle. That his teacher does not look perturbed is unsurprising. Nearly half of India’s small children are malnourished: one of the highest rates of underweight children in the world, higher than most countries in sub-Saharan Africa. More than one-third of the world’s 150m malnourished under-fives live in India. That makes the sight of small, skinny children depressingly routine. Vishal’s rural village is not especially impoverished; 120km (75 miles) from Mumbai, India’s financial centre, it offers factory-work as well as the farm labour most country people do. But the battered register in Vishal’s nursery, a government-run centre known as an

UNICEF in Action Highlights Information Resources ... PDF Version Carol Bellamy, Executive Director, UNICEF Malnutrition is largely a silent and invisible emergency, exacting a terrible toll on children and their families. The result of multiple causes, including a lack of food, common and preventable infections, inadequate care and unsafe water, it plays a role in more than half of the nearly 12 million deaths each year of children under five in developing countries, a proportion unmatched since the Black Death ravaged Europe in the 14th century. Malnutrition blunts intellects and saps the productivity and potential of entire societies. Poverty, one of the causes of malnutrition, is also a consequence, a tragic bequest by malnourished parents to the next generation.
The State of the World's Children 1998 report details the scale of the loss and the steps being taken to stem it. Sentinels of progress are lighting the way: Nearly 60 per cent of the world's salt is now iodized, and millions of children every year are spared mental retardation as a result. Vitamin A supplementation is helping bolster disease resistance in children and may soon become an important measure in helping reduce maternal deaths around the world. Communities are working together to identify their problems, decide on their options and take action, with women emerging to play leadership roles that spark numerous other changes in people's lives.

Many of these birds that become veteran self-puckers have been doing it on and off for years and need medications to break the habit. Drugs that have been used successfully for this problem include the hormone Depopovera (medroxyprogesterone acetate injection of 5-25mg/kg every 3 months) which alters mood and mood-altering medications that work directly on the brain, such as Elavil (amitryptyline1-2mg/kg twice a day) and drugs that decrease obsessive-compulsive behaviors such as Clomacalm (chlomipramine HCl 0.5-1mg/kg once or twice a day orally). I have had the most success using a preparation of strawberry syrup and chlomipramine.

I suspect these conditions when an older bird housed under excellent conditions begins to pluck its feathers. Many of these conditions are incurable.

Malnutrition is a broad term which refers to both undernutrition (subnutrition) and overnutrition . Individuals are malnourished, or suffer from undernutrition if their diet does not provide them with adequate calories and protein for maintenance and growth, or they cannot fully utilize the food they eat due to illness. People are also malnourished, or suffer from overnutrition if they consume too many calories.
Malnutrition can also be defined as the insufficient, excessive or imbalanced consumption of nutrients. Several different
