      Mission janvier 2010 : moringa

Kalene Mission Hospital is in the northwest corner of Zambia, approximately 20 kilometres from the borders of Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Kalene Hospital from the air (Click for larger image) The hospital is part of a network of mission stations under the auspices of Christian Missions in Many Lands (CMML). It has a constitution, and a hospital board. Plans are underway to redevelop the hospital so that it can be used to help train staff to work in other mission hospitals and health clinics in Zambia, DRC and Angola. The Kalene area combines a number of advantages, which have contributed to it being redeveloped as a training hospital. The hospital is close to the Zambezi river, and from 2007 has been provided with reliable 24 hour electricity as a result of the Zengamina hydroelectric project . Although the hospital is in a very rural location it is central to the Lunda tribal area. Many patients especially from Angola and DRC travel a significant distance to be seen at the hospital. There is both the opportunity and space to renovate and expand hospital buildings, with recent renovation being supported by the Zambian Government, Brass Tacks and the Beit Trust . There is a flight service and nursing school facility on site and Sakeji primary school is about 20 km away.

      20 May, 2009 Eating a healthy, balanced diet plays a vital part in maintaining a good level of all-round health and fitness and will avoid malnutrition.
      Brought to you by NHS Choices In order to stay healthy, we need to consume foods from a number of different food groups including:
      • carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and dairy.
      A healthy, balanced diet also includes eating a minimum of five daily portions of fruit and vegetables, many of which contain essential vitamins and minerals.
      An inadequate diet can cause malnutrition
      An inadequate diet can lead to malnutrition. Malnutrition is a condition which is caused by an imbalance between what a person eats and the nutrients that they need to maintain good health. Malnutrition commonly occurs when someone does not eat enough food (sub-nutrition). However, it can also occur if a person has a poor diet that provides them with an incorrect balance of the basic food groups listed above.

Child malnutrition prevalent in central/south Iraq
Tuesday, May 29 1997: A nutrition status survey conducted last month by the Ministry of Health in cooperation with UNICEF and the World Food Programme shows widespread malnutrition in central/south Iraq. In 1991, one year after the Gulf war, 9.2 per cent of children under five years in the 15 governorates in the area were found to be malnourished. Today, the figure has risen to 25 per cent, or some 750,000 children. The survey was conducted at 87 primary health care centres during three National Polio Immunization Days (12-14 April 1997). When parents brought their children to receive the polio vaccine, a sample of 15,000 children was also examined to assess their nutritional status. Findings from the study highlight the alarming level of chronic malnutrition (low height for age) among children under five which has reached an average of 27.5 per cent. Chronic malnutrition has long-term implications on a child's physical and mental development. After a child reaches two or three years of age, chronic malnutrition is difficult to reverse and damage to the child's development is likely to be permanent. This situation is a direct result of a combination of factors including adverse economic conditions, poor health, inappropriate or insufficient food, and lack of proper care. The survey also shows the following:
  • Every governorate in central/south Iraq has a rate of chronic malnutrition of at least 20 per cent;
