    Archaeology and Prehistory.
Malta has always stood at the crossroads of the Mediterranean. People crossing from north to south, or from east to west, have all left a trace on the island. The most startling of these traces is to be found in the great Neolithic Temples which on Malta and Gozo. These were built 1000 years before the Pyramids, and are the oldest stone buildings in the world. I hope that you are impressed! The construction of these buildings demonstrate a mastery of quarrying, stone working, building and engraving techniques and must be the work of a mature, confident culture. Like stone circles in the British Isles some appear to be concerned with the passage of the seasons as indicated by the position of the Sun.
    Mnjandra Neolithic Temple.
To the geographer these structures are important because they indicate the presence of a very early (perhaps the earliest) civilization. We must ask the questions
    • How did these people live?
    • What was their impact on the environment?
    • How has the islands environment changed and why?

The prehistoric temples of Malta are unique in all the world. They are the oldest standing stone structures which remain to us from ancient times. The temples date from 4000 - 2500 BC. They are older than Stonehenge, older than the Pyramids. Their architecture is beautiful and inspiring, their scale impressive yet human. Excellently preserved, they were covered with soil from early times and ignored by the long march of history. They were rediscovered and carefully restored by European and native Maltese archaeologists beginning in the 19th century. Because of their uniqueness and beauty, the major temple complexes are deservedly designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The worship of a Mother Goddess is usually associated with female priestesses, although male figures which may represent priests have also been found. Did individual worshippers participate in ceremonies related to important events in their lives - birth, puberty, marriage, sickness, death? Did community leaders consult the temples about planting and sowing, community disputes, food stores, or new settlements? Were the temple leaders also the political rulers of the community? People are still searching for answers to questions such as these, for the first inhabitants of Malta left no writing behind them when they vanished, as mysteriously as they had first appeared, sometime around 2500 BC.

The Prehistoric Archaeology of Malta Part 2: 7000 years of history you can visit
By James Martin , About.com Guide
    See More About:
Malta - Prehistoric Temple Picture James Martin zSB(3,3) There's a lot to see in Malta, considering its 7000 years of verifiable occupation. In Malta, you must start by visiting the Neolithic Temples. Built a millennium before the pyramids, they are an achievement unparalleled in their time, especially considering the necessity of moving 20 ton blocks around the rocky landscape. The Hypogeum - The Jewel of Maltese Prehistory Dating to around 3600 BC, the Hypogeum is an extraordinary underground structure carved completely out of rock. It was primarily a burial chamber, at one time housing over 7000 bodies between 3600 and 2500 BC, the same time as a wave of megalithic structures were being built across the islands. What happened to turn the peaceful, agrarian settlers from Sicily who occupied the island from 5000 BC onward into skilled stonemasons? We simply don't know.
