Archaeological Malta
The Maltese temples are the oldest freestanding structures in the world. They were built before the Egyptian pyramids. They were constructed out of durable coralline and softer globigerina limestone. The Mnajdra Temples reveal the western world's earliest construction methods. Although they have withstood the elements for several millennia many of the temples are collapsing due to intense weathering. The Hypogeum is by far Malta's most impressive and finest temple. This world-class archaeological site was discovered by chance in 1902 as a stonemason prepared to lay the foundations of a house. What he uncovered was a rather macabre collection of the bones of over 7000 people. The earliest bones date back as far as 3600 BC, when its thought bodies of the dead were thrown into natural crevices. When these began to fill, new chambers were cut into the rock in a style that mirrored above ground temple architecture, and century after century, more bones were added. Things To Do In Malta – Malta Museums
This article provides information about a selected few of Malta’s most interesting museums, and places to visit in Malta during your holiday.
Malta is said to be one large heritage park, with over 7000 years of history. With over 30 museums on such a small island, clearly including all aspects of Malta’s heritage, it is no wonder that holiday tourists and heritage enthusiasts alike will be satisfied! The Citadella in Gozo, and Valletta, Malta’s capital city, each contain the largest number of museums on either island, all of which are perfectly situated within walking-distance from one another. However, instead of listing each museum in order of location, they have been listed here in order of theme, making it easier for you to spot those which interest you the most!
Malta Archaeology
The first settlers of the island travelled by boat to Malta from Sicily around 5000BC and are said to be responsible for the superb megalithic Temple culture of the island, known particularly for its temples and for its distinctive array of figurines. Since the temple sites are open-air, most of the original features were replaced by replicas in order to ensure preservation of the originals in safe, indoor locations. The National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta is in fact the primary location for the original features as well as the finds from all the prehistoric sites. The same may be said for the Museum of Archaeology in the Citadel, Gozo, which houses the findings from the Gozitan sites, with particular attention given to the recent finds from the Xag'ra Circle prehistoric burial grounds.

I think Mike Pitt's comments at the end of the article are quite pertinent. People certainly do NOT become archaeologists to get rich. We become archaeologists because we want to be archaeologists. The problem now is remaining an archaeologist.
I am now having to seek employment as a teacher because there is nowhere for me to practice my profession at the moment. If I am succesful I suspect I will not return to archaeology as I simply won't be able to afford it!
I am not an professional archaeologist, so I don't know
exactly how the economic situation effects archaeology
overhere (The Netherlands).
Since 'Malta' archaeology is a booming business, but of
course dependend on all kinds of building programs.
If the planning of building- and infrastructural projects
stagnates, the archaeological enterprises go with it.
But hey, perhaps then there will be time to evaluate all
those findings that are gathering dust in the warehouses.

Archaeology Tour of Malta
by Charmaine Bugeja in Malta, Malta Europe Starting off with the Archaeological Museum in Valletta, we kick off the day by going through various archaeological experiences around the island of Malta. With a history dating back to approx 5000 BC, Malta has a lot to offer, in particular within the archaeological context. On our tour we go through the various stages of history since the first man set foot on the islands, take a look at the temple phenomena that can only be found in Malta, observe the various statues and statuettes found within such temples and discuss what such buildings meant to the dwellers. Tour includes a brief lunch break consisting of a local Maltese delicacy and refreshment.
