Malta : Culture
Malta's cultural determines stem largely from its history of foreign domination and the predominance of the Roman Catholic church. Folk traditions have evolved mainly around the festa to celebrate the patron saint of a village, marked by processions and fireworks. Good Friday also is celebrated with colourful processions in several villages. Imnarja, the Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul, which takes place on June 29, is the principal folk festival; it is highlighted by folksinging (ghana) contests and fried-rabbit picnics at Buskett. The annual Carnival is celebrated at Valletta with vigorous dancing displays that include the Parata, a sword dance commemorating the Maltese victory over the Turks in 1565, and Il-Maltija, the Maltese national dance. Football (soccer) is the most popular sport in Malta, and Ta' Qali National Stadium is the site of valuable local and international matches. Valletta is the centre of many of Malta's cultural institutions: the National Museum of Archaeology, the National Museum of Fine Arts, the War Museum, the Manoel Theatre (one of Europe's oldest theatres still in operation), and the Foundation for International Studies. The National Library of Malta dates from the late 18th century and houses a large collection as well as the archives of the Knights Hospitalers. The Folk Museum and the Museum of Political History are located at Vittoriosa. Until the early 1990s, Maltese radio and television stations had been operated exclusively by the Malta Broadcasting Authority, but a change in legislation has opened the way for privately operated broadcasting stations. There are two daily newspapers in Maltese and one in English.

Malta Culture and Heritage
The country, Malta is replete with heritage sites and buildings of historical importance. The architecture of the Maltese Island is unique in itself. The Malta culture and heritage dates long back and has a history of seven thousand years. The ruins of the megalithic temples bear the proof of the grand Neolithic period, which was a grand era for the Maltese. The other races who had left their marks in Malta are Phoenicians, Romans, Carthaginians and the Byzantines.
The language of Malta had been greatly influenced by the Arab people who had conquered the land in the period 870 A.D. Those races which ruled Sicily also governed the Malta Island which was formerly an extension of the place. The Normans and the Aragonese reigned Malta for a long period and it was St. Paul who introduced the religion Christianity to the Maltese. Charles V gave the country in the hands of the sovereign military order who reigned Malta from the year 1530 to 1798.
Presence of good artists during those days proved the greatness of the Malta culture and heritage.

SOCIAL CONVENTIONS
Maltese people are generally friendly and welcoming and the usual European etiquette and courtesies are the norm.. However you should also bear in mind that this is a fiercely religious country and that Roman Catholicism plays a major role in society. Therefore, if you are visiting a church it's customary to wear modest attire and make sure that your shoulders and legs are covered (i.e. no shorts!). Smoking is prohibited on public transport and in some public buildings, including cinemas. Where no service charge has been included in the bill, a 10% or 15% tip is appreciated in hotels and restaurants. Taxi drivers are usually tipped 10% of the fare.
RELIGION
The Roman Catholic faith is predominant in Malta and the church is a very prominent aspect of the Maltese way of life. Catholicism is believed to have been brought to Malta by St Paul, a Christian Missionary shipwrecked on the island around A.D. 60, who converted the then pagan Maltese population making them one of the oldest Christian people in the world. Splendid domes are a hallmark of Maltese churches and the grand interiors are beautifully ornate. Around the island you will also see street corner religious icons or shrines, these are usually found in older sections of the towns and villages.
