      Malta History
One of the very earliest marks of civilization in the Maltese Island is the temple of Ħaġar Qim, which dates from between 3200 and 2500 BC. Another remarkable temple site, Mnajdra, can be found adjacent to it. The oldest of all the megalithic temples on the Islands is Ġgantija in Gozo, dating back to before 3500 BC. The society that built these structures eventually died out or at any rate disappeared. Phoenicians colonise the Islands around 700 BC using them as an outpost from which they expanded sea explorations and trade in the Mediterranean. The Islands later came under control of Carthage in 400 BC and then of Rome in 218 BC. The Islands prospered under Roman rule, during which time they were considered a Municipium and a Foederata Civitas. Many Roman antiquities still exist, testifying to the close link between the Maltese inhabitants and the people of Rome. In AD 60, the Islands were visited by St. Paul, who is said to have been shipwrecked on the shores of the aptly-named St. Paul’s Bay. After a period of Byzantine rule and a probable sack by the Vandals, the Islands were conquered by the Arabs in AD 870 who introduced the cultivation of citrus fruits and cotton, and irrigation systems. The Arab rule lasted until 1091, when the Islands were taken by the Sicilian Normans. A century later the last Norman king, Tancred of Lecce, appointed Margaritus of Brindisi the first Count of Malta. Subsequent rulers reconstituted a Country of Malta in 1283. The Maltese nobility was established during this period, some of it dating back to 1400.

The Beginning
The University of Malta traces its origins to the founding of the Collegium Melitense which was set up through direct papal intervention on 12 November 1592. This college was run by the Jesuits on the lines of their other colleges established elsewhere and known as 'Collegia Externorum', catering for non-Jesuit students. By a papal Bull of Pope Pius IV, dated 29 August 1561, confirmed later by a further Bull of Pope Gregory XIII, dated 9 May 1578, the Jesuits were empowered to confer the degrees of Magister Philosophiae and Doctor Divinitatis. However, the foundation deed specified that besides Philosophy and Theology, other subjects such as Grammar and the Humanities should also be taught.
Following the abatement of the plague of 1675, Grand Master Nicolò Cotoner appointed Fra Dr Giuseppe Zammit as 'lettore' in Anatomy and Surgery at the Sacra Infermeria on 19 October 1676. This attempt at formalising medical teaching at the Order's hospital is considered by many as the beginning of our medical school. Zammit went on to establish the first medical library on the island as well as a medicinal herb garden in one of the ditches of Fort Saint Elmo.

      History
Malta was settled in Neolithic times; the Hal-Saflieni Hypogeum is the site of what is believed to be the largest group of prehistoric European rock-cut chamber tombs. The island, anciently called Melita, later belonged successively to the Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, and Romans. St. Paul was shipwrecked there ( A.D. 60). Arab rule began in A.D. 870; the Normans of Sicily occupied it c.1090. In 1530 the Hapsburg Charles V granted Malta to the Knights Hospitalers . Notwithstanding a determined siege by the Turks in 1565, the knights held it until 1798, when it was surrendered to Napoleon. The British ousted the French in 1800 and made it a crown colony in 1814. For most of the 19th cent., Malta was ruled by a military governor. The opening of the Suez Canal (1869) increased its strategic value, Malta becoming one of the principal coaling stations for steamers bound for India and East Asia. During World War II, Malta was subjected to extremely heavy bombing by Italian and German planes, and in 1942 King George VI awarded its citizens the George Cross for bravery. Almost from the start of the period of British rule the Maltese agitated for increased political freedom. Considerable self-government was granted in 1921, but this was revoked in 1936. A constitution granted in 1947 was revoked after civil disturbances in 1959. Malta achieved full independence in 1964 and became a republic in 1974. The Labor party was in power from 1971 to 1987. The government of the Nationalist prime minister Edward Fenech Adami was elected in 1987 and was returned to office in 1992 and 1998. Alfred Sant of the Labor party was prime minister from 1996 to 1998. In the 1990s, Malta tried to balance its foreign policy between neighboring Libya and the economically more important Western nations. It applied for full membership in the

Malta, the largest island, is 237 sq. kms in area; Gozo is 68 sq. kms and Comino, 2 sq. kms. The population numbers circa 370,000. Of these, 28,000 live in Gozo. Comino is only inhabited by a few farmers. Because of their strategic position, Malta and Gozo have been inhabited for the past 7,000 years. The two islands have a long and varied prehistoric period: Neolithic, Copper and Bronze age civilisations lasted more than 4,000 years; one can still admire vestiges of those remote times in form of impressive stone temples, a unique hypogeum and remains of skilful handicrafts. The first known people to settle in Malta were the Phoenicians, who reached these shores on their trading ventures in the 9th century BC. They were succeeded by their Punic kinsmen, the Carthaginians, who were eventually conquered by the Romans in the 3rd century BC. The Romans governed these islands until the division of the Roman Empire in the 4th century AD.

Malta : History
In 533 A.D. Malta became part of the Byzantine Empire and in 870 came under Arab control. Arab occupation and rule left a strong imprint on Maltese life, customs, and language. The Arabs were driven out in 1090 by a band of Norman adventurers under Count Roger of Normandy, who had established a kingdom in southern Italy and Sicily. Malta thus became an appendage of Sicily for 440 years. During this period, Malta was sold and resold to various feudal lords and barons and was dominated successively by the rulers of Swabia (now part of Germany), Aquitaine (now part of France), Aragon (now part of Spain), Castile (now part of Spain), and Spain. In 1522, Suleiman II drove the Knights of St. John out of Rhodes, where they had established themselves after being driven out of Jerusalem. They dispersed to their commanderies in Europe, and in 1530 Charles V granted them sovereignty over the Maltese islands. For the next 275 years, these famous "Knights of Malta" made the island their domain. They built towns, palaces, churches, gardens, and fortifications and embellished the island with numerous works of art. In 1565, Suleiman the Magnificent laid siege to Malta. After several months, the Knights and the Maltese population prevailed and the Turks withdrew. Over the years, the power of the Knights declined, and their rule of Malta ended with their peaceful surrender to Napoleon in 1798.

Malta History
Prehistory (5000 BCE-218 CE)
The oldest megaliths in the world are located on the islands of Malta and Gozo. Archeologists have dated the stone structures of Ggantija (the Giant's Tower), Hagar Qim, Tarxien, and Mnajdra to about 5200 BCE. The first settlers arrived on Malta and Gozo around 5000 BCE from Sicily. The cave Ghar Dalam contains archeological evidence of a layer of Neolithic inhabitation on top of earlier strata of fossilized remains of pygmy hippos and deer from Africa.
Malta's early settlers were farmers who grew barley, wheat, and leguminous plants, and raised pigs, cattle, sheep and goats. Their pottery is on display in the Archeological Museum in Valletta.
The prehistoric population of Malta was not self-sustaining, and new groups of people migrated to the island. By 2300 B.C.E., the Tarxien Cemetery people were the dominant culture on the island. They came from Southern Italy. Around 1450 B.C.E., the Borg in-Nadur arrived on the island. They eventually assimilated the Tarxien Cemetery people into their culture. The Bahrija settlers arrived in 900 B.C.E. The two groups lived on the island together but little is known about their coexistence.
