Black Mamba Snake
No snake is more feared than the black mamba (Latin: Dendroaspis polylepis The black mamba is a nervous and timid snake that will try to defend itself at the slightest sense of danger. However, as it is not a robust snake it cannot bear close encounters and it will lash out at anything coming too close. The black mamba will not give ground to anybody and relies on its speed and extremely toxic neurotoxin. In the literature and in the news, numerous cases of bites and fatalities can be found. Most people believe that there is only one type of mamba snake and that it is black. In fact, there are four species of mambas, of which none are black. The black mamba is brown or grey and only black in the inside of its mouth.
Appearance, habitats and behavior
Female and male black mamba differ very little in the way they look. In fact, there are no visible differences and only experts can tell whether a mamba is a male or female on closer inspection. Black mamba snakes can grow up to 13 feet, and it is capable of lifting one third of its body into the air. The Black Mamba is a tree snake but it is equally at home on the ground where it hunts. When in a tree the Black Mamba is usually resting and or basking in the sun. Mambas are diurnal; they hunt during the day and return to their burrows or rock crevices during the night.

    Black Mamba
    Introduction
The black mamba is Africa’s deadliest snake. Untreated, its bite has a fatality rate of 100 percent, making it a killer among killers on a continent where it is thought that nearly 20,000 people die of snake bites each year, and the residents of Swaziland in southern Africa have suffered losses for generations. With essentially no access to anti-venom, many people turn to traditional healers for help, but their herbal remedies always fail, leaving Swazis feeling fearful and defenseless against one of their nation’s most infamous killers. Swaziland resident Clifton Koen doesn’t really care for snakes, but his wife, Thea Litschka-Koen, is crazy about them. With her husband’s sometimes reluctant help, she has endeavored to change attitudes about black mambas and other snakes found in the area. In addition to starting the nation’s only reptile park, devoted to educating the public and providing a refuge for the animals, the two have become the region’s go-to experts for safe, humane snake removal from homes, schools, resorts and workplaces. In the course of catching and relocating any number of snakes per day, Thea and Clifton give impromptu lessons about the snakes, covering fact and fiction, and do their best to prevent any unnecessary casualties – human or reptile.

The green mamba snake, which is also known as Dendroaspis viridis, is glossy grass-green in color with light bright green underside and averages 1.8 meters or 5.9 feet in length. The longest green mamba snake recorded was 3.7 meters or 12 feet in length. The green mamba snake lives in the forests of southeastern African near the coast stretching from the Eastern Cape in South Africa through Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, Southern Malawi and Eastern Zimbabwe. This venomous snake can be found living in the trees of the African forest and is rarely ever found on the forest ground unless following prey or basking.
Unlike the black mamba snake, the green mamba snake is shy and non-aggressive. The green mama usually will swiftly make a get away if it feels threatened unless it is continuously being provoked. Like the black mamba, they will flatten their necks into a narrow hood as a defensive posture. The green mamba’s venom contains calcicludine, dendrotoxin, and other neurotoxins, which is similar to the black mamba’s venom.

In geckos, like the Standing's day gecko below, the scales are soft and delicate, and the skin may easily tear. In geckos, specialized scales on the foot are subdivided into rows of branched microscopic flaps that adhere very closely to smooth surfaces, enabling geckos to walk up glass. Monitors also have small regular scales, but much tougher than those found in geckos. Some scales in monitors are underlain by small dermal bones similar to those found in the scales of turtles and crocodiles. In the Dumeril's monitor below, you can see the scale arrangement typical of the monitor lizards. How does this scale pattern compare to that of the Komodo dragon ? Compare these monitors' scales to those of this Mexican beaded lizard , to which they are related. What similarities and differences do you see?

Australia's Venomous Snakes: The Modern Myth or Are You A Man Or A Mouse?
by Brian Bush Author's Note: When concerning reptiles, the terms poisonous and venomous require redefining. Poison is toxic if inhaled or ingested. The only poisonous reptiles known in Australia are the Green Turtle (possibly) and the Hawksbill Turtle (definitely). The poison, named chelonitoxin, causes similar symptoms to ciguatera poisoning. More people have probably died on this earth as a result of consuming turtle flesh than ever has been the case from snakebite in Australia. There are no reported deaths from turtle poisoning here since 1945. Venom is generally harmless if ingested but toxic when it comes in contact with the underlying tissue normally protected by the skin. Venomous animals have to break the skin with body-spines, stings or teeth (includes fangs in spiders and centipedes). The only venomous reptiles found in Australia are snakes. For too long we have been telling the world, as well as each other, that Australia's snakes are the most venomous. On what evidence do we make this assumption? Solely on their ability to kill mice! What a joke! The basis for the following discussion and points of view are personal experience, comments heard and questions asked during my time lecturing on venomous animals as well as a perusal of the relevant literature. I might just mention here that I have never lectured to mice!
