Trust American Manatee #2 (112 Kb JPEG) The American manatee is a large, cylindrically shaped mammal, with forelimbs modified into flippers, no free hindlimbs, and the rear of the body in the form of a flat, rounded, horizontal paddle. It may reach a length of up to 4.6 m (15') and a weight of up to 1,650 kg (3,630 lb). A manatee vaguely resembles a walrus without the tusks. Its skin is gray, wrinkled, and rubber-like. The gray color of the skin is often obscured by algal growth, barnacles or other incrustations on the skin. The manatee's body is covered with sparse hairs, and its lips are covered with bristles. Its flexible flippers are used to help it move along the bottom of its habitat and for scratching, touching and even embracing other manatees. Its upper lip is deeply divided by a vertical cleft. The manatee can move each side of the upper lip independently while feeding. It uses this flexible upper lip, together with its forelimbs, to manipulate food into its mouth. The American manatee occurs in coastal waters and slow-moving rivers with a salinity ranging from saltwater to freshwater and with a depth usually from 1.5 - 6 m (5 - 20'). It seems to prefer water temperatures above about 20 deg C (68 deg F). The American manatee feeds opportunistically on a wide variety of submerged, floating, and emergent vegetation, including submerged rooted sea grasses, emergent

Manatee Facts
Description: West Indian manatees are large, gray aquatic mammals with bodies that taper to a flat, paddle-shaped tail. They have two forelimbs, called flippers, with three to four nails on each flipper. Their head and face are wrinkled with whiskers on the snout. The manatee's closest relatives are the elephant and the hyrax (a small, gopher-sized mammal). Manatees are believed to have evolved from a wading, plant-eating animal. The West Indian manatee is related to the West African manatee, the Amazonian manatee, the dugong, and Steller's sea cow, which was hunted to extinction in 1768. The average adult manatee is about 10 feet long and weighs between 800 and 1,200 pounds.
Habitat and Range:
Behavior Manatees are gentle and slow-moving animals. Most of their time is spent eating, resting, and traveling. Manatees are completely herbivorous. They eat a large variety of submerged, emergent, and floating plants and can consume 10-15% of their body weight in vegetation daily. Because they are mammals, they must surface to breathe air. They may rest submerged at the bottom or just below the surface of the water, coming up to breathe on an average of every three to five minutes. When manatees are using a great deal of energy, they may surface to breathe as often as every 30 seconds. When resting, manatees have been known to stay submerged for up to 20 minutes. Manatees can swim up to 20 miles per hour in short bursts, but they usually only swim about three to five miles per hour.

          • Related Family: Dugongidae (Arctic Sea Cows - extinct - and Dugongs)
Manatees and dugongs are marine mammals of the order Sirenia. They originated in the middle Eocene period around 45 to 50 million years ago. They are gentle, plant-eating herbivores sometimes nicknamed "sea cows". The name manatee comes from the Haitian word manati . Today, their closest living relatives are elephants [Proboscideans], hyraxes [Hyracoidea] and aardvarks [Tubulidentata]. Manatees are classified as [sub-]ungulates, even though they live in the water. Their thick-skinned, streamlined, almost hairless bodies have forelimbs modified into flippers. The tail is enlarged and horizontally-flattened. Manatees are now quite rare. Perhaps only 2,500 are left in the USA. In ancient times, sailors mistook them for mermaids or sirens on account of their long tails. Today, they often bear scars on account of their collisions with boats, a major hazard. Manatees spend most of their time feeding, resting or travelling. They prefer shallow saltwater bays, slow-moving rivers, canals, estuaries and coastal waters. Manatees are quite agile creatures. A manatee uses its flippers and tail to steer itself. It moves its tail up and down to propel its body forward through the water. Manatees can swim vertically and upside down; they can do rolls and perform aquatic somersaults. Their extra-dense bones enable them to stay suspended at or below the water's surface.

13. Manatees, Belize Animals, Caribbean Critters
Lots of information on the critters of the Caribbean, the animals of Belize in particular
http://ambergriscaye.com/critters/manatee.html
Manatees Manatees pronounced “MAN uh TEES”, have been called many names, including sirenians, sea cows and even mermaids. The first Europeans to encounter manatees thought that they were seeing the mythically beautiful mermaids, which were believed to be half woman, half fish creatures. On closer inspection however, they were disappointed to see that these animals were not quite as beautiful as they thought. Manatees and dugongs are members of the order Sirenia. Sirenians include four living species: the West Indian manatee, the West African manatee, the Amazonian manatee, and the dugong. The West Indian manatee has two subspecies, the Florida and Antillean manatee. The West Indian (Trichechus manatus), lives in the warm coastal waters of the southern United States, Mexico, the Caribbean Islands, Central America (including Belize), and the northeastern countries of South America. The Amazonian manatee (Trichechus inunguis) is only found in fresh water. It dwells in the Amazon and Orinoco river systems of South America. The West African manatee (Trichechus senegalensis) lives in the rivers and coastal waters of western Africa. It is thought that Sirenians evolved from four-footed land mammals about 45-50 million years ago. Modern relatives of Sirenians are elephants, aardvarks, and hyraxes, which are small rodent-like mammals. The scientific genus name “trichechus” is Latin for hair and refers to the small hairs that are found all over the manatee’s body. The name Sirenian comes from a word in ancient mythology known as “siren”. Sirens were halfwoman- half-bird creatures known to lure sailors to dangerous parts of the sea and their deaths. In Homer’s “Odyssey”, sirens were mythical women who lured the men into a dangerous whirlpool.

Manatees are large marine mammals that favor the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and cluster in and around Crystal River and Homosassa, especially during the cooler winter months. Our relatively warmer waters, with an average temperature of 72°F from the springs, attract these gentle animals. In the Summer months, as many as 230 have been seen on a single day. During the coldest times, up to 476 can be found herding in the waters of Citrus County.

Manatees on the Sarasota Gulf Coast!
Manatee NEWS: January 10, 2010
the Manatees were just counted, with a total of 5,067 manatees spotted. The clear skies allowed the count to be very accurate. Record cold weather drove the manatees to the power plants, where the water is warmer. This is about 1,200 more than last year, but the count last year could have been hampered by the clouds and manatees were not congregated as closely as they were this year.
What is a Manatee? Manatees are a large, slow-moving marine mammal that inhabit warm tropical and subtropical waters of North and South America and Africa. The world population of manatees is extremely endangered. The last aerial survey of the Florida West Indian Manatees that live in Florida waters was taken in January 2003. The survey showed a population count of 3,113 manateels. Manatee Shape and Size Average adult manatees are about 10 to 14 feet long and weigh between 1,500 to 1,800 pounds, although the largest are over 13 feet and weigh 3,500 pounds. Their torpedo-shaped gray-brown bodies taper into flat, paddle-like tails. They have two flippers and their faces are wrinkled with whiskers on the snout. Nostrils are on the upper surface of the snout which close tightly like valves when submerged. Manatees live to be approximately 60 years old.
