ABOUT MANATEES... Reading selection obtained from Mote Marine Laboratory , Sarasota, Florida. Manatees, also known as sea cows, belong to the order Sirenia. There are four living species in this order. These are the West Indian manatee, the West African manatee, the Amazonian manatee, and the dugong. There was a fifth species, the Steller's sea cow which was discovered in the Bering strait in 1741. Within 27 years it was hunted to extinction. The manatees seen along the coast of Florida are West Indian manatees. There are two subspecies of the West Indian manatee. One is the Florida manatee which is found along the southeastern United States. The other is the Antillean manatee. It can be found throughout eastern Central America. It also lives along northeastern South America as far south as Brazil's northeast coast. Manatees tend to stay in shallow, slow- moving rivers, bays, estuaries, and coastal-water ecosystems. These areas offer them what they need to survive: warm water shelter, food, and breeding areas. During the winter, manatees gather in waters around the coast of Florida. Even though their bodies have a great deal of fat, they are very affected by cold when the temperature falls below 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Large numbers of manatees can usually be found near warm water sources. These include natural springs and power plants with warm water discharge.

There are two subspecies of the West Indian manatee: the Florida manatee ( Trichechus manatus latirostris ) and the Antillean manatee ( Trichechus manatus manatus ). These subspecies are distinguished by differences in cranial measurements and by their geographic distribution. Trichechus senegalensis , the West African manatee. About the same size and shape of the West Indian manatee, the West African manatee differs in some important respects: position of the eyes, snout, and cranial bones. The West Indian Manatee
The West Indian manatee was discovered in the 1500s by Spanish explorers that hunted them for their meat, hide, and oils. Hunted almost to extinction, Florida banned the hunting of manatees in 1893. The official "season" for Florida Manatee is October 30th to March 31st. But there are Manatee that stay in certain areas all year. In warmer months manatees spend most of their time at sea and out of harm's way, but from October 31st to March 31st, the colder weather drives them inland to places where can find warm water. Florida's Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge supports the largest concentration.
During the summer months the best time to catch them is in the morning when they are frolicking and sunning. They usually stay in one area when they are in the "morning mode" and can be approached quite easily. In the afternoon, when the sun is hot they stay mainly on the bottom or are on the move for food. When the air temperature drops below the water temperature of 72 degrees (72 degrees is the year round temperature for Crystal River) for several days, hundreds upon hundreds of manatee are in river. Best sightings are on the coldest days of the year.
The West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) is a large, gray-brown, aquatic mammal with a body that tapers to a flat, paddle-shaped tail. It has two flippers with 3 to 4 nails on each, and it's head and face are wrinkled, with whiskers on the snout. The manatee's closest relatives are the elephant, hyraxes, and aardvarks than any other marine mammal. Manatees are believed to have evolved from a wading plant-eating animal. The West Indian manatee is related to the West African manatee, the Amazonian manatee, the dugong and the Steller's sea cow, which was hunted to extinction in 1768, just 27 years after it was discovered in 1741. The average, adult manatee is about 10 feet long and weighs about 1000 pounds. They can reach up to 13 feet in length and weigh up to 3, Scuba000 pounds.

Manatee Facts and Information
Manatees (family Trichechidae, genus Trichechus) are large, fully aquatic marine mammals sometimes known as sea cows. The name manati comes from the Taino, a pre-Columbian people of the Caribbean, meaning 'breast'. They contain three of the four living species in the order Sirenia, the other being the dugong, which is native to the Eastern Hemisphere. The Sirenia is thought to have evolved from four-legged land mammals over 60 million years ago, with the closest living relatives being the Proboscidea (elephants) and Hyracoidea (hyraxes). Manatees are mainly herbivores, spending most of their time grazing in shallow waters and at depths of 1-2 meters (3-7 ft). Much of the knowledge about manatees is based upon research done in Florida and cannot necessarily be attributed to all types of manatees. Generally, manatees have a mean mass of 400-550 kg (900-1200 lb), and mean length of 2.8-3.0 m (9-10 ft), with maximums of 3.6 meters and 1,775 kg seen (the females tend to be larger and heavier). When born, baby manatees have an average mass of 30 kg. On average, most manatees swim at about 5 km/h to 8 km/h (1.4 m/s to 2.2 m/s; 3 to 5 miles per hour). However, they have been known to swim up to 30 km/h (8 m/s; 20 miles per hour) in short bursts. Manatees inhabit the shallow, marshy coastal areas and rivers of the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico (T. manatus, West Indian Manatee), the Amazon Basin (T. inunguis, Amazonian Manatee), and West Africa (T. senegalensis, West African Manatee). A fourth species, the Dwarf Manatee (T. bernhardi) was recently proposed for a population found in the Brazilian Amazon, although some have questioned its validity, instead believing it is an immature Amazonian Manatee. Florida is usually the northernmost range of the West Indian Manatee as their low metabolic rate makes cold weather endurance difficult. They may on occasion stray up the mid-Atlantic coast in summer. Half a manatee's day is spent sleeping in the water, surfacing for air regularly at intervals no greater than 20 minutes.

Manatees
Did you know?
  • Adult manatees can weigh up to 3000 pounds (typically they weigh around 1000 pounds). Manatee teeth are continually replaced. Manatees spend 6-8 hours a day feeding! Manatees communicate using clicks and squeals. Florida manatees can live in freshwater, brackish and saltwater environments. They prefer to swim in waters that are less than 20 feet deep. It is illegal to pet, feed or give water to manatees, as this teaches manatees to approach docks and boats, where they are at risk of being hit by boats. The largest single cause of manatee mortality is collisions with watercraft.
Manatee Education Programs (K-5)
The Florida Sea Grant Extension Program has developed education programs for elementary school classes in St Johns and Flagler Counties. These programs include pre- and post-visit activities as well as an in-class visit from our friendly manatee mascot and friends. Teachers who are interested in booking programs, or people interested in volunteering to teach the manatee program should contact Maia McGuire at 386-467-7464 or
