  • Manic depression is a mental disorder characterized by dramatic mood changes that go far beyond an ordinary day's ups and downs. At one end of the spectrum, the person experiences extreme elevation or irritability, then can fall into classic symptoms of depression. What Is Manic Depression Anxiety? Manic depression anxiety is a serious, long-term medical condition in which patients experience extreme emotional highs, called manic episodes, and extreme lows in the form of depression. Psychiatric professionals now commonly refer to the illness as bipolar disorder. Dangers of Manic Depression Manic depression, or bipolar disorder, is characterized by mood swings far more intense than those of other individuals. These swings can take a person from manic (up) to depressed (down) in a matter of minutes. There are dangers associated with these mood swings. Kinds of Manic Depression Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive disorder, is a debilitating mood disorder characterized by extreme mood shifts. Mania symptoms include risky behavior, increased energy, racing thoughts, talkativeness and over-confidence. Symptoms of depression include feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness or guilt, loss of energy,...

Manic Depression and the New Year
by
Dr. Peter Melgaard Thompson
Most scientists studying Bipolar Illness agree that this is genetic illness. That is, it runs in families and is passed on though the genes. It has an incidence of about 1%, or 1 out of 100 people in the general population. In families with this genetic problem the incidence is much higher. In identical twins, if one twin has Bipolar Illness, then there is 70% chance that the other identical twin will also have it. As in Major Depression there are very good treatments, in this case not with antidepressants but with mood stabilizers. The oldest and most studied is lithium. More recently, the anti-seizure medications have been shown to have anti-manic properties. In most cases these medications eliminate manic behavior within two weeks and greatly reduce the possibility of having another mania. Lithium is a salt, and is usually taken 2-3 times a day. It is generally a safe medication with little long-term side effects. On the short-term side there are many side effects. The most life threatening is overdose or dehydration. This is because high blood levels can be toxic to the heart. Patients on lithium should have their blood levels checked weekly to every other week. The most common side effects are nausea, weight gain, acne, and thirst. The other group of medicines that are effective in treating mania are the anti-seizure medications. The best studied of this group are carbamazepine (Tegretol) and valproate acid (Depakene or Depakote). These medications seem to work best in patients that cannot tolerate the side effects of lithium or where lithium is ineffective. This group tends to be a subgroup of bipolar patients - the rapid cyclers and dysphoric manics. A rapid cycler is a bipolar patient who goes through four complete cycles a year (manic, depressed and normal mood). The patient with dysphoric mania is characterized by having symptoms of both mania and depression at the same time. As with lithium, weekly or bimonthly monitoring of blood levels are required. The most common side effects are nausea and weight gain.

Please read my new article Living with Schizoaffective Disorder . It goes into much more detail about my mental illness than this page. I'm featured in a story about bipolar depressives in the high tech industry in the Metro San Jose March 30, 2000 edition. In further news, Slashdot , a news and discussion site for the Free Software community, ran an article I submitted regarding the Metro article called Manic Depressive Geeks. Be forwarned - discussions on Slashdot get pretty "colorful" and computer programmers are well known for being pretty blunt with voicing their opinions online. 9000 people visited this page in the two days the story was featured on Slashdot - in the whole month of March 2000 I got 3000 visitors.

Manic Depression An Overview by Lori Todd Professor Keefer's Writing Workshop II, 1997 Lori Todd Dr. Keefer Writing Workshop II 13 May 1997 There are different kinds of depression. There is reactive depression, which is what a person experiences when mourning someone's death. Major depression can have episodes and lasts about 2 weeks alternating with normal periods. Dysthymia depression is mild but present most of the time lasting for at least 2 years. Finally there are manic depressive disorders classified as bipolar I and bipolar II (Fieve 22). Bipolar I is a major depression alternating with periods of manic highs, which can require hospitalization. When a person is in their mania state and the elation is severe, they are diagnosed as a bipolar I patient. Bipolar II involves periods of major depression also mixed in with manic, hypomanic, or mild periods of elation. The difference between bipolar I and bipolar II is that bipolar I patients suffer from extreme feelings of elation and bipolar II patients suffer from extreme feelings of depression (Fieve 22). The "mania" mood is not your average high of happiness. It is very similar to hypomania, but the person can be hospitalized because the mania gets to an extreme where it is out of control. Mania is excessive grandiosity, reduced need for sleep, excessive talkativeness, telephoning, spending, constant flow of thoughts, inability to concentrate, increase in social activities, and poor judgment (Fieve 31-32). Individuals affected with the bipolar disorder may suffer one episode of mania and depression in their lifetime, but this is usually not the case. Over 95% of people with bipolar disorder have recurrent episodes throughout their lives. As the illness progresses, individuals tend to spend more time ill and less time well. It has been reported that 25% of the individuals have attempted suicide (Basco 2).

Some of the more common manic depression signs to keep a look out for include the relatively common symptoms of lethargy, sadness, irratability, self-medication (most often in the form of tobacco, marijuana or alcohol), lack of interest in otherwise pleasurable activities (especially sex) and excessive crying or irritability.
Interspersed with these episodes of depression are manic episodes that can take the form of great and unexpected bursts of energy or a propensity towards making outbursts that the subject would otherwise not even consider making.
The presence of both is necessary to be one of the millions of North Americans that are currently suffering from the ravages of bi polar disorder.

Schizophrenia and Shamanism Well, we've all been there. Thinking everyone knows what we're thinking, thinking we're directly responsible for events anywhere in the world. Maybe seeing and hearing weird stuff. Maybe you feel that you've died and are wandering, lost, in the Underworld. It's like you've got a new consciousness and an awareness of the interconnectedness of everything. And it all seems more real than anything ever did before. So what's going on? This situation is nothing new. Amongst all peoples throughout the world, 1% of the population has found themselves in this strange and terrifying place. Amongst indigenous peoples, the individual is considered to be experiencing a shamanic initiation and is taken under the wing of the local shaman. The shaman then teaches the apprentice to live with the new consciousness, and to use it to visit the spirit world, usually to find cures for the tribe members. This site suggests that perhaps the methods that these shamans use to control their new consciousness can work for people in the western world that suffer from so-called schizophrenia and manic depression.
