About Mental Illness
Manic Depression
download PDF This factsheet aims to explain manic depression (also called bipolar disorder). You will find a description of the condition, its symptoms and the treatments available. If you are experiencing manic depression, you will find suggestions of ways that you may help yourself and the options open to you. You will also find ideas on how friends and family may help.
What is manic depression?
People diagnosed with manic depression tend to experience mood swings from periods of severe depression to periods of elation known as mania. Most people experience ups and downs in daily life, but with manic depression the changes between highs and lows are extreme. It is known as a psychotic illness because people can lose touch with reality.
What are the symptoms of manic depression?
Mania
If you are experiencing a manic phase you may feel marvellous, on a high, excitable and euphoric. In manic states, people can lose insight and may experience delusions. For example, people may think that they are famous and important. They may make wild plans, spend extravagantly and lose social inhibitions. In manic phases, people may lose insight into the fact that they are ill and deny that there is anything wrong with them or their behaviour. Depression
If you are experiencing a depressive phase, you may feel unhappy, that everything you do is a struggle, and perhaps not worth the effort. Often people feel hopeless about the future and unable to see any positives in life. You may feel apathetic and unable to participate in activities you used to enjoy. At its worst, depression can lead to such feelings of helplessness and lack of worth that people may give up the will to live, or begin to consider suicide.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Atlanta's Ichiban Records Ichiban distributed is quite long. One of the many labels that Ichiban distributed in the early '90s was Crazy Vibe Entertainment , a small company out of Akron, OH. It was in 1992 that Ichiban distributed this little-known release by Cleveland rap trio Strugglin' Souls. At the time, the rap scenes in Midwestern cities tended to have a variety of influences some Midwestern MCs were heavily influenced by West Coast gangsta rappers, and some preferred to be influenced by East Coast rap. Strugglin' Souls falls into the latter category; Manic Depression sounds like it could have been recorded by a hardcore rap group from New York, Philadelphia, or Boston. Boogie Down Productions and Public Enemy are prominent influences, and many of the tracks are angrily sociopolitical. "Rough Neck Anthem," "Betta Dayz," the title song, and other tracks candidly address the harsh realities of ghetto life, and the MCs don't hesitate to talk about poverty, crime, unemployment, and violence. But as hard-hitting and sobering as Manic Depression is, Strugglin' Souls never gets into gangsta rap. The Midwesterners don't rap in the first person about thug life, and while their lyrics are angry, they aren't violent in fact, the album often laments black-on-black crime. Regrettably, Manic Depression turned out to be the only album by Strugglin' Souls, which wasn't in a class with

Manic Depression
What is Manic Depression?
It is quite unfortunate that during a manic episode, an individual may not recognize that they are ill, which makes treatment extremely difficult. Other manic behaviors that are commonly exhibited are gambling and anti-social behaviors such as giving random advice to strangers passing in the street. When a manic phase shifts to depression, the depression may last only hours, or extend into days or weeks.
What are causes of Manic Depression?
There are variations in cycling within bipolar disorder. There are those with rapid cycles who alternate between depression and mania within only a few days. Others may spend weeks or months in depression before switching to a manic phase. Comments are closed.

Have you or someone you know ever dealt with clinical depression?
Manic depression is also called bipolar disorder , and it's the second type of
clinical depression. Bipolar means having two opposite ways of being. Kids and adults who suffer from this disorder go through two emotional phases: the depressed or "down" phase, and the manic or "up" phase. They can bounce between them like a yo-yo.

Manic Depression What Causes It? Asking For Help Getting Treatment Helping A Friend ... From the Mentors The symptoms of the down phase can be all the ones listed in Signs and Symptoms . But when people who have this illness aren't acting depressed, they are often manic, which means excited or frenzied. Manic seems like the opposite of depression, even though it's really part of the same illness. When people with this illness switch from depressive to manic, they go from having no energy and being very sad to having way too much energy and feeling like they can do absolutely anything they want to, like some sort of superhero.
