Manic depression characterized by changing mood shifts can range from depression to mania that is rapid. Studies suggesting possible causes indicate that there may be no single ‘exclusive’ cause for manic depression. Among others it is said to be caused due to biological reasons. Manic depression tends to run in families as genetic abnormalities appear in chromosomes.
Actually a combination of biological, genetic, and environmental factors appears to trigger and perpetuate the chemical imbalances in the brain that shape this complex disorder. Abnormal brain activity evinced by imaging scans and tests show over-secretion of cortisol, a stress hormone. With excessive calcium influx in brain cells, abnormal hyperactivity is seen in parts of the brain associated with emotion and movement coordination. Further there is low activity in parts of the brain associated with concentration, attention, inhibition, and judgment. Research suggests the role of infectious agents to trigger manic depression.
Manic depression makes one suffer successive bouts of distinct mood disturbances. Ranging from extensive depression to uncontrolled mania, people experience typical states of mania and hypomania. These states of depression mingle with normal moods and behavior. Manic depressives experience extreme mood swings repeatedly alternating between high and low feelings.
