Manitoba Culture History:
Chronological Overview
Aboriginal Rock Paintings While historical reconstructions of our past normally rely on written sources, archaeologists have unearthed an articulate unwritten account of Manitoba's heritage in the form of ancient Aboriginal artifacts and settlements. This record reveals a 12,000 year story of Native migration, survival and accomplishment in a challenging environment and a venerable cultural tradition that continues to influence and enrich the lives of present day Manitobans. The major developments of this long time span include:
  • The coming of the first peoples, the big game hunters of the Palaeo Period
  • The spread of Archaic traditions, which developed specialized and distinctive technologies to make the fullest use of their local environmental resources,
  • The major accomplishments of the Woodland cultures, which supplemented dependence on bison and other wild resources with domesticated plants and developed long distance trading contacts, art works, and complex ceremonial traditions.
Major cultural achievements are evident in all of the province's geographical zones including the prairies, forests, and remote arctic and subarctic regions, which supported the development of the unique

History in Canada
Edit This Though Canada's history has been relatively short, (the Dominion of Canada was only actually founded in 1867) it has certainly been eventful. Canadians are fascinated by their past and this is reflected in the many historical sites throughout the country. In Central and Eastern Canada, the history entails the early struggles of the first European settlers, and of how the two major cultural groups of the time (British and French) interacted to build a great nation together. In today's highly charged political arena, with on-going talk of Québec independence, this earlier relationship is too often forgotten. The history of Central and Eastern Canada is also very much tied in with the American Revolution, when thousands of people loyal to the British crown crossed the border and settled in these areas in order to remain under British rule. The struggle with the United States continued until after the war of 1812, when an attempted invasion of Canada by the Americans was repulsed. Canada adopted the Statute of Westminster in December 1931, giving it full legislative autonomy within the British Empire. The country emerged as an independent nation within the Commonwealth after the Second World War, and the last legislative link with the U.K. was ended with the patriation of the Canadian constitution in 1982. Queen Elizabeth II remains Canada's head of state, represented by the Governor General.

Manitoba Culture Days promises to be an action-packed weekend
  • September 15th, 2010 12:35 am MT
Culture Days is a free annual event that celebrates and explores art and culture in Canada Photo: www.culturedays.ca - www.fetedelaculture.ca With 160 free activities in 53 venues across the province and 100 organizers, Manitoba Culture Days promises to be an action-packed celebration of art and culture. During a press conference held on September 14, 2010, members of the media got a preview of what will happen on September 24-26, with performances from two local artists, aerial dancer Talia Pura  and musician Justin Lacroix  (see slideshow at the bottom of the article). Winnipeg, Brandon, Flin Flon and a few more communities – Russell, Peguis, Portage La Prairie, Saint Eustache and Lorette – will offer an impressive program line-up in English and French. Things will heat up on September 24, at 7 p.m. under the canopy at the Forks, in Winnipeg, with several events including a concert with local musicians, workshops, T-shirt and glass painting classes, and a performance by the Summerbear Dance Troupe. On the same day, people will also have the opportunity to attend the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s dress rehearsal for their season opener that will be performed that evening.

Manitoba farms grow more sunflower seed and beans than any other province and produce the second-largest flaxseed crop. CBC News More than 4,500 activities are being offered across each province and territory as part of Culture Days in Canada. Culture Days, a three-day celebration of arts and culture, kicks off Friday night at The Forks in Winnipeg. The purpose of Culture Days is to raise the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities. More than 4,500 activities are being offered across the country. Most are free, family-friendly activities — classes and demonstrations, workshops, backstage tours, concerts, exhibitions, performances, screenings and more. In Manitoba, more than 160 events will be held across the province in Winnipeg, Brandon, Portage, Steinbach, Russell, Flin Flon and Peguis. Nicole Matiation, who heads up the Manitoba events, says many of the activities are hands-on "for dance, for theatre, for making collages and painting t-shirts. "There's the city stories project around tarot card readings and telling stories around Winnipeg."

All Good Things Come in Small Packages
July 29th, 2010 by Crystal Kolt ‘All good things come in small packages’ I’ve heard this saying all of my life and although sometimes I didn’t want to agree, it always seemed to be true. I mourned my skinny legs and 56 pounds at age twelve, skinny arms while pounding out Chopin in my teens and 20’s and would give anything to have a taste of that ‘problem’ today (I’m planning a Valerie Bertinelli-esque comeback). Similarly when my husband and I were studying Piano duo in New York with fabulous piano duo teacher/performer Jeaneane Dowis, one of her many words of wisdom was to build our career in a small community where you can hone your art, survive with family and friends during those ‘thrifty’ years shall we say then move on up the circuit. Well the small town she meant was Winnipeg and as life would have it we would invest in those words by heading eventually more North until we would arrive at the best artistic time in our lives in a town (it’s actually still called a City because at one time its population was over 10,000 and once you’re called a City you’re a city) of 6,000 people called Flin Flon. We left Winnipeg thinking that we were leaving music behind forever. You see 15 years ago when we were professional musicians (Mark with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and Contemporary Dancers and myself teaching piano and enjoying being a stay at home mom with our two children) government cuts seemed to be happening all over the place and we either had to come up with a plan or live off of the kids in our old age. One law degree later led us to this northern community.
