Aotearoa/New Zealand: Carter Holt Harvey the worst transnational corporation In April, the fifth edition of the Roger Award took place. This prize is given to the worst transnational corporation operating in Aotearoa/New Zealand and is organized by the Campaign Against Foreign Control of Aotearoa (CAFCA) and GATT Watchdog, two local activist/campaign organizations. Although run on a tiny budget, the award has attracted overseas attention from organisers in other countries who are confronting corporate power and control. It is a very concrete way of raising awareness about a global problem by concentrating on the impacts TNC`s activities have on local communities and the environment. The award is given to the transnational corporation operating in New Zealand judged to have the most negative impact in each or all of the following: unemployment, monopoly, profiteering, abuse of workers/conditions, political interference, environmental damage, cultural imperialism, impact on Maori indigenous peoples, running an ideological crusade, health and safety of workers and the public, and impact on women. This year's winner was: Carter Holt Harvey (CHH). It was once one of New Zealand's 'own' transnational corporations, but some years ago the US-based timber titan International Paper took over it and now has a 50.1% share. As well as in New Zealand, CHH has operations in Australia and Fiji. It is one of the southern hemisphere's largest producers of wood and paper products. Like its parent company, it is virulently anti-worker, anti union, and, in spite of its attempts at greenwashing its image it is a menace to the environment. It owns approximately 330,000 hectares of predominantly plantation radiata pine in New Zealand.

Maori Warrior
Kia Ora! This is concept is a representation of a true and powerful spirit of people. I admire the creative and proud heritage of the Maori indigenous peoples of Aotearoa(called New Zealand). The weapons and body adornment are all based on real historical traditions. The Maori traditional/contemporary culture and people have become extremely popular in mainstream Euro/American media. This has had both beneficial and hazardous effects due to the awareness. In my creations, I hope to represent such mistreated/under represented cultures with beauty and respect for their creativity and what it means to the people. It is that which attracts me initially to discover more about my fellow humanity. The ART! MORE HERE.

'Boris' - New Zealand Wood Pigeon by Martin Bell.
Kereru is the Maori (indigenous peoples) name for the New Zealand Wood Pigeon. This fruit eating pigeon is one of the largest pigeon species in the world and was eaten by the Maori. This is a painting of Boris, a very tame bird I became aquainted with while working at the National Wildlife Centre. As the name suggests, Boris was thought to be a male until she laid an egg. Sexes are visually indistinguishable from one another.
This painting is done in oils on canvas board and is 14”x18” (unframed).
There are 50 limited edition Giclee prints on canvas available in the original size.
If you would like to purchase this original bird painting or print, please email Martin Bell to check availability and details.

This series is to celebrate the Kiwi - New Zealand's most famous symbol that is recognised throughout the world. Our nocturnal, flightless, endangered national bird has been described as "the most unbirdlike bird in the world". The Gold Kiwi is minted from gold refined to the highest international standard of .9999 pure. The obverse prominently features a non-traditional pose of the Kiwi with its head held high. This "Proud Kiwi" design is the work of internationally-renowned wildlife sculptor Rick Lewis, and captures the essential spirit of being a New Zealander.

Country Profile
Flag of New Zealand
Background:
The Polynesian Maori reached New Zealand in about A.D. 800. In 1840, their chieftains entered into a compact with Britain, the Treaty of Waitangi, in which they ceded sovereignty to Queen Victoria while retaining territorial rights. In that same year, the British began the first organized colonial settlement. A series of land wars between 1843 and 1872 ended with the defeat of the native peoples.
The British colony of New Zealand became an independent dominion in 1907 and supported the UK militarily in both World Wars.

Kia ora, just as we were about to send out another alert re the SIS Amendment Bill, this fortuitously arrived from Gatt Watchdog, so that saved us a bit of typing .... If you need further information on the Bill, please refer to our earlier Action Alert: Do you want the SIS in your home? URGENT ACTION ALERT! New Zealand government moves to enact represssive intelligence legislation (Please repost widely on other human rights, labour rights and social justice newsgroups and lists here and overseas) The New Zealand Government is proposing an imminent law change which would extend the powers of the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) to break and enter into "any place" in New Zealand. The New Zealand Security Intelligence Service Bill 1998 is being rushed through Parliament after the December 1998 NZ Court of Appeal ruling which found that NZSIS interception warrants do not confer the right to enter private property. This arose from a civil court action (Choudry v Attorney-General) taken against the NZSIS after two NZSIS agents were caught breaking into the home of GATT Watchdog organiser and anti-APEC activist Aziz Choudry. The break-in took place during an alternative conference on APEC and free trade which Aziz was involved with organising, just prior to the 1996 APEC Trade Ministers Meeting in Christchurch. Neither the NZSIS nor its political masters have explained this bungled SIS operation, hiding instead behind a shroud of "national security". Although a number of NGOs, community groups, and unions have repeatedly called for an independent inquiry into the Choudry break-in, this has been ignored by the government.

MÄori arrival in New Zealand
It is not precisely known when MÄori arrived. Polynesian voyagers are believed to have migrated to what is now New Zealand from eastern Polynesia in the latter part of the 1st millennium CE . As their descendants adjusted their practices and culture to their new environment, they became the MÄori. New Zealand was one of the last Pacific island groups reached by humans. Archaeological evidence suggests there were probably several waves of migration to New Zealand between and . MÄori oral history describes their arrival from a place called Hawaiki by large ocean canoes waka ). Migration accounts vary among MÄori tribes or
