Cartographic institutions and map libraries
Map Libraries and Institutions of Cartography The noble art of cartography has seen many faces, styles and politics. When you believe the earth is flat you produce a different map than of a spherical planet, for example. It would be nearly impossible to list the complete range of maps and charts available nowadays. The range of maps has become as diverse as the different methods used to create them. Nevertheless, creating an organized system of maps is possible if we divide them into functional categories. The following institutions, national, academic and private, are specialized in archiving maps in their various forms throughout the ages. Whenever possible, a personal visit is preferred because seeing an old map up close is different than in digital form.

E-mail: tony.campbell@bl.uk Introduction
The metaphorical route maps I shall be offering will be highly selective, and sometimes personal. But I shall try to raise fundamental issues that I believe are relevant for all map libraries. Given the mixed nature of this audience, I hope that what I have to say may have some interest for those who are deprived of the enjoyment of handling maps. Much of what I say will relate to the Internet. 'Maps and the Internet' is the focus for a growing number of symposia. Recently, the British Ordnance Survey hosted a three-day meeting of 25 European countries on just this subject. We have, quite rightly, talked a lot about the Web this week. In a little over a year's time I shall take scheduled retirement from the British Library. The thoughts I shall be offering here - both personal and, at times, unfashionable - reflect an audacious attempt to glimpse a distant horizon. They are my own, not necessarily those of the British Library.

Mapping out Map Libraries Edit Mapping out Map Libraries Ferjan Ormeling Discussing the requirements for map data quality, map users and their library/archives environment, the paper focuses on the metadata the user would need for a correct and efficient interpretation of the map data. For such a correct interpretation, knowledge of the rules and guidelines according to which the topographers/cartographers work (such as the kind of data categories to be collected), and the degree to which these rules and guidelines were indeed followed are essential. This is not only valid for the old maps stored in our libraries and archives, but perhaps even more so for the new digital files as the format in which we now have to access our geospatial data. The commercial supremacy of the Dutch and Flemish engravers lasted throughout the seventeenth century, for reasons easily understood with reference to England. The domestic English market for maps was just too small to support a skilled work force able to produce high quality maps cheaply; London publishers therefore used Netherlandish sources throughout the seventeenth century. Thus, John Speed's 1625 map of Spain (8) was actually engraved by the Hondius family in Amsterdam, although it was printed in London. (Jodocus Hondius had himself lived in London from 1576 to 1593, one of several engravers among Protestant refugees from the Low Countries.) Bunting, 1581
