The USGS
This is the USGS easy-access (data about data or metadata) site on the National Geospatial Data Clearinghouse (NGDC) as part of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI). Recommended. The USGS is also accessible through here. The USGS work on " Exploratory Analysis of Environmental Interactions in California ." This preliminary report (not yet approved by the USGS) provides information on the San Francisco region and includes text, images, and animations. The USGS blurb about what a GIS is, why they are cool, etc.

About the Collection
The Western Illinois University Libraries' Map Collection is located on the 4th Floor of Malpass Library. It contains more than 150,000 maps as well as aerial photographs, atlases and reference materials related to maps and cartography. The Map Collection includes cartographic materials on many geographic areas and a variety of subjects, with an emphasis on West-Central Illinois. It also contains plat books for West Central Illinois counties. The University Archives contains a small collection of historic maps, including plat books, Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps and U.S. Geological Survey topographic maps. The Map Collection receives most of its maps through the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP), including topographic and geologic maps from the U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Forest Service maps, nautical and aeronautical charts, Central Intelligence Agency maps, and GIS data produced by Federal agencies through the FDLP.
Collection Access
As part of the Depository Library Program, the Map Collection is open to WIU students, faculty and staff and the general public. Reference books and atlases can be located using WestCat, the WIU Libraries' online catalog. Most maps in the Collection are not cataloged. For information about maps available in the collection, please contact or visit the Map Collection (Telephone: 298-2722 or via E-mail). Maps available in the University Archives can be located using WestCat.

The mapproj library allows you to project spherical maps onto the plane, in various ways. It provides two functions:

  • map.grid
mapproject is compatible with the original S function of the same name. map.grid is used to visualize the effect of a projection. ACMLA actively serves as the representative professional group for Canadian map librarians, cartographic archivists and others interested in geographic information in all formats. Patricia Gaspari-Bridges, Librarian The Map Collection is one of the largest cartographic collections at an academic institution. The collection is strong in geoscience, topographic, and bathymetric maps and charts. In 1986, the scope of the collection was broadened by the addition of Firestone Library's large collection of contemporary (post 1918) maps in political, physical, and cultural geography. Current road maps and atlases for all countries and major cities are available as well. Collection Maps: (Non-circulating) 300,000 maps and charts, aerial and satellite photographs; 100 relief models; 15 globes; 850 slides. Subject Areas Maps: Geology, geochemistry, geophysics, climatology, natural resources, land use, soils, water resources, remote sensing, topography, political and cultural geography, physiography, bathymetry, transportation, navigation, urgan and regional planning.
