September 10th marks the birthday of two American writers: Mary Oliver and Jared Diamond. Mary Oliver is an American poet, now 75 years old and still writing. She has written many books of poems, including American Primitive , which won her a Pulitzer Prize in 1984. Parts of her collection The Leaf and the Cloud were included in The Best American Poetry books of and The collection she published in 2006, called Thirst , has been praised by many reviews, including one from Booklist , which stated: " Oliver , one of the country's most popular and highly awarded poets, presents her credo at the outset of her newest collection: My work is loving the world. The poems that follow are what readers expect from Oliver, beautifully tempered lyrics celebrating the splendor of the living world." Author Jared Diamond is a scientist, currently at UCLA. He has won many awards for some of his books, including the dual-winning The Third Chimpanzee: The Evolution And Future Of The Human Animal . This book focuses on inter-species domination (like humans over chimpanzees), as well as humans domination over other humans.

When visiting Gateway Canyons, it is impossible to miss the postcard-perfect view of the Palisade Originally named for the outlaws altering the brands of the stolen cattle, Sewemup Mesa was a hideout for outlaws in the early days of the wild west. Today the mesa has been designated a wilderness study area by The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and is home to elk, deer, black bears and a variety of other small game animals. Peregrine falcons are often seen nesting along its thousand-foot cliffs. The Uncompahgre Plateau , with an elevation of nearly 10,000 feet, was once a part of the ancestral Rocky Mountains. The plateau extends 70 miles and rests between the Gunnison and Uncompahgre Rivers to the east and the San Miguel and Dolores Rivers to the west. The plateau contains many steep walled canyons, including the geologically distinct Unaweep Canyon at the north end. In the language of Ute Indian tribe, the word Unaweep means “canyon with two mouths.” Appropriately named, the Unaweep Canyon is the only canyon in the world divided down the middle with streams running out of both mouths. There are many different theories on how the canyon evolved into what we see today. The most common belief being that the canyon was once the course of the Gunnison River and several dramatic upward shifts rerouted the river and created the towering plateaus. New York as a global city is a significant place in the mental maps of people around the world. Getty Images zSB(3,3) A person's perception of the world is known as a mental map. A mental map is an individual's own internal map of their known world. Geographers like to learn about the mental maps of individuals and how they order the space around them. This can be investigated by asking for directions to a landmark or other location, by asking someone to draw a sketch map of an area or describe that area, or by asking a person to name as many places (i.e. states) as possible in a short period of time. It's quite interesting what we learn from the mental maps of groups. In many studies, we find that those of lower socioeconomic groups have maps which cover smaller geographic areas than the mental maps of affluent individuals. For instance, residents of lower income areas of Los Angeles know about upscale areas of the metropolitan area such as Beverly Hills and Santa Monica but really don't know how to get there or where they are exactly located. They do percieve that these neighborhoods are in a certain direction and lie between other known areas. By asking individuals for directions, geographers can determine which landmarks are embedded in the mental maps of a group.
