Tournament of Roses Parade marching bands From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Londonderry High School Marching Lancer Band, from New Hampshire during the 2004 parade For the Tournament of Roses Parade , top marching bands from all over the world are invited. Many of the nation's top high school marching bands, along with college and organizational marching bands participate. The bands participating in the parade have also developed traditions. For example, Pasadena City College 's Lancer Marching Band always marches in the Rose Parade, along with high school band and color guard students from all over Southern California , who are selected by audition the previous autumn. The Tournament of Roses Honor Band is a coveted position, and those selected are among the best student musicians in California . Nine of the high school trumpet players, selected by performance on their auditions, and the best snare drummer, are selected as the Herald Trumpets, who march directly before the Rose Queen's float and play fanfares. University Marching bands from the two schools participating in the Rose Bowl Game are invited to march in the parade. They typically accompany the floats that represent the conferences.

Parks Throughout his life, George Parks surrounded himself with the coined phrase, “with energy, enthusiasm, and excitement.” It is an understatement to say that he spent his last day conveying these emotions and lessons to those around him. During one of his last rehearsals with his marching band, Mr. Parks stated, “This is my first job.” For thirty-three years, he directed the University of Massachusetts Minuteman Marching Band. Starting in 1977, at the age of 24, he began a revolutionary change in the way the Minuteman Band operated and performed. He often joked, “During my first year, people hated me!” However, his unique style of marching soon drew not only crowds of new band members, but an entirely new appreciation and respect for the band program in Amherst, and for himself as a leader. When he first arrived in 1977, 180 students were in the band. On September 16, 2010, Mr. Parks left behind close to 400 students, many of whom have learned from his leadership, inspiration, and kindness since their first day of college.

Second Time Arounders Marching Band Field Show Founded in 1983, The Second Time Arounders Marching Band was formed to perform for the Festival of States celebration in St. Petersburg, FL . The Band has grown over the years, and now has over 600 members. They range in age from 18 to 85, and represent more than 40 of the 50 states, as well as several foreign countries. The band rehearses only 5 times each year (auxiliary units and drum line 8 times), and has five to seven performances per year. The only requirement for membership is to have had experience in a high school or college marching band.
