A New Orleans Musical Heritage Highlight New Orleans is a city steeped in musical heritage, and marching bands have always been a highlight of the Bacchus parade. Each year, we feature over thirty of the finest and most powerful marching bands seen anywhere in Mardi Gras . Our bands are big, loud, and full of pure heart-pounding, foot-stomping, hand-clapping energy. "Our goal is to treat the Bacchus spectator to a complete entertainment experience from start to finish", explains Bacchus' Marching Band Committee, "and music is a big part of the package. We want to give our guests an unbeatable musical festival and a spectacular parade all wrapped into one. We recruit our own talent, so that we can hand pick the best bands for our parade." Over the past three decades of Bacchus parades, we have featured hundreds of marching bands including The Louisiana State University Tigers, The Southern University Jaguars, Saint Augustine's Marching 100, Alcee Fortier, Warren Easton, McDonogh 35, and Sarah T. Reed High Schools, just to name a few. Home Mythology Krewe History Float Building ... Legal Notice

Welcome to the website of the Westside Warrior Marching Band, a division AA band in Omaha, Nebraska, directed by Roger Groth, drum majored by Erica Badie and Franz Gruber. The Westside Warrior Marching Band is dedicated to excellence, which was once again demonstrated by this 2001 season, with our show- Latin Jazz. Our pieces included (Jay Bocook's arrangement) of Ernesto Lecuona's Malaguena My Spanish Heart , Chick Corea's La Fiesta (arranged by Tom Wallace), and Since I Fell For You . Playing with style and pride, Westside once again presented an exciting show, and not only to the band parents! Westside garnered the highest score, a Superior (I), at each contest we participated in. Thank you for visiting, and I hope that if you haven't see us yet, you soon will!

Bands or arrangers seeking to arrange music for a marching band must seek "Permission to Arrange" from the company or individual that holds the "print rights" to the music. The "print rights" Composition and Publisher Databases are designed to assist you in finding the "print rights" holder.
REMEMBER: You are required by law to acquire your permission to arrange before you begin your arrangements. Do not wait until your entire show is finished.
PERMISSION TO ARRANGE GRANTED IS SPECIFIC
Permission to Arrange is usually granted to specific arrangers, for specific performances, by specific bands, and usually for a given year. The Composition and Publisher Database is designed to give you assistance in locating the "print rights" company. It is not an approved list. Each band should submit its own request as early as possible, prior to selecting its program.
WHAT CONSTITUTES A NEW ARRANGEMENT?
In addition to unpublished compositions, new arrangements include:
  • "rearrangements" of another marching band arrangement or drum corps arrangement

Founded in 1879, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln band program has grown from a single small ROTC band to encompass seven ensembles that perform for a combined audience of well over one million people annually. The School of Music at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln enthusiastically invites all students, regardless of academic major, to participate in one or more of our bands. Additional information about each of our band ensembles is available under the ensemble heading in the drop down menu at the top of the page. Auditions for the fall concert and jazz ensembles are scheduled for the first week of classes in August. We encourage you to explore the rich tradition of our band program.

    Brass Instruments
    Cornet
    - The trumpet and cornet are quite similar; they are usually pitched in B flat, both are transposing instruments and they both have valves. But whereas the trumpet is used in jazz bands, the cornet is usually used in brass bands. Trumpets also have a more powerful sound and has a cylindrical bore. Cornets, on the other hand, have a conical bore. Trumpet - Although the trumpet underwent changes during the Renaissance, it has been in existence far longer than that. Used at first for military purposes, studies show that ancient people used materials such as animal horns for similar purposes, for example, to announce danger.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF AFRICAN AMERICAN MARCHING BANDS The earliest marching bands in America were most likely the fifers, drummers, trumpeters, and pipers of Colonial-era militias. Like their European predecessors, these bands functioned to regulate daily life in military camps, give signals or pass orders in battle, and boost the morale of soldiers during wartime (White 1944: 9). Each company had at least one drummer and fifer (Southern 1983: 43). Historians Al Right and Stanley Newcomb maintain that when the Continental Congress drafted the bill forming the United States Marine Corps in 1775, the bill “also provided for a Marine Band consisting of one drum major, one fife major, and 32 drums and fifes” (1970: 65). By the time the Civil War had begun in 1861, new brass instruments were being used universally among the military bands that were beginning to thrive in America. Southern emphasizes that in the Union Army, “one of the first acts of the white commanding officers of Negro regiments was to procure instruments and music instructors for the formation of bands” (1983: 207). Through parades and other public performances, these bands helped recruit other black men to join the Union Army. According to Southern, by the war’s conclusion in 1865 “more than 185,000 black men had been inducted into the army as the ‘United States Colored Troops’” (1983: 205). Each of the black regiments had its own band (Southern 1983: 207).
