Storm Waves: Galveston, Texas, 1900
The worst disaster in U.S. history took place September 8, 1900 when a hurricane struck Galveston, Texas, killing an estimated 6,000-8,000 people Storm waves flooded the Gulf shore of Galveston almost 16 feet deep, and surged into Galveston Bay, flooding the "sheltered" shore ten feet deep. The waves demolished everything, pushing it inland until the debris wall was thick enough to resist the waves. After the disaster, a seawall was built along the Gulf shore, and virtually the entire city was raised anywhere from six inches to 17 feet. A canal was dug behind the seawall. Dredges excavated sand from the bay, sailed in along the canal and pumped sand into low-lying areas. Buildings were raised on pilings and people got around on board walks looking, as one author put it, "like something from Doctor Seuss." It typically took several weeks to fill any given area. The design of the seawall was unusually well thought-out. Instead of attempting to resist waves by brute force, the seawall has a concave face to direct waves upward. A long gentle slope behind the wall allows for the inevitable wave overflow to dissipate itself and run back. The seawall has resisted several storms that survivors thought were actually worse than the 1900 storm.

Home Services Applications Clients ... Contact Us Our Focus Spotlight Geophysical Services provides innovative geophysical solutions to geotechnical and environmental problems. Similar to medical imaging, geophysical methods image the subsurface without excavating or intruding into the ground. Geophysics is an essential part of many types of projects that require site-wide coverage, while cost-effectively guiding borehole locations, sample points, construction, and remediation efforts. We offer a broad range of geophysical measurements to aid in the subsurface characterization of geologic conditions and potential hazards. Applications include karst (sinkhole) investigations, contaminant mapping, landfill studies, land development, abandoned mine investigations, and much more. Your Source for Geophysical Expertise Our experienced staff works with you throughout all phases of the project to ensure that the results of the investigation are understandable and meet the project objectives. Headquartered in South Florida, we provide rapid response to sites throughout the southeastern United States and Latin America. Contact us today to discuss how geophysics can benefit your project. The Effects of African Dust on Coral Reefs and Human Health

Documentary: African Dust, Coral Reefs and Human Health Hundreds of millions of tons of mineral dust are transported thousands of miles through the atmosphere from the Sahara and Sahel of Africa to the Caribbean and the Americas every year. We are investigating whether African dust is playing a role in coral reef declines throughout the Caribbean region, and if African dust has a negative effect on human health. If so, what processes are involved? We are sampling dust in the air (aerosols) in the dust source region (Mali), off the coast of Africa (Cape Verde Islands), and at downwind sites in Tobago (southeastern Caribbean) and St. Croix (U.S. Virgin Islands, northeastern Caribbean) for laboratory toxicity testing, and for identification of chemical and biological contaminants
Global Aerosol Model
Chemical contaminants [pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and metals] and microorganisms have been identified in dust air samples from all sites. Testing the toxicity of dust on marine organisms, microorganisms including pathogens, and humans (human cells and fluids) is the next step.
