All About Mars
Named after the Roman god of war, the planet Mars is located four planets from the Sun . Commonly referred to as “The Red Planet,” Mars tends to give off a reddish hue when viewed from Earth . This is believed to be caused by an abundance of iron oxide on the planet’s surface. Mars is about half the size of the Earth. Mars has two moons, Phobos and Deimos, both of which are relatively small in size and not shaped in perfect spheres like the Earth’s moon . Mars can be easily seen from Earth without a telescope at a brightness that is only surpassed by the planet Venus, the Moon and the Sun Mars has long been considered the most realistic location for life in our solar system, aside from Earth. Many even believe that intelligent life may have once existed on the planet. Scientific exploration of Mars has not produced any evidence of life on the planet. It is believed that the harsh surface environment and extreme solar radiation that saturates the surface of the planet is not capable of sustaining any kind of life. Currently, the

Project Summary
This issue describes the MARS-96 robotic spacecraft scientific mission to Mars prepared according to the Federal Program of Space Exploration developed by the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Russian Space Agency. The Mars 96 spacecraft was launched from Baikonur on 16 November 1996. The spacecraft was not inserted into the interplanetary trajectory to Mars due to a malfunction in the Block-D (the third stage of the rocket) and during the third revolution around the Earth the spacecraft reentered the Earth's atmosphere and fell into the Pacific Ocean.
Information was provided by Space Research Institute, Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytic Chemistry, Lavochkin Research Association, Keldysh Applied Mathematics Institute, Flight Control Center and the Mars-96 scientific experiment teams.

Some words about Mars Express and Beagle 2 :
Mars Express is an European Space Agency's (ESA) mission to Mars.
The spacecraft was launched on 2nd June 2003 and arrived for Christmas.
It carries different instruments for studying the Red Planet into a near polar orbit.
It also carried the lander Beagle2 which was released a few days before the probe went into orbit.
Beagle 2 had to land « softly » on Mars surface and made various experiments.
However, as there was no sign from the lander, it was declared lost on 11, February 2004.
An inquiry has been held to determine the reasons of Beagle 2's silence.
Some words about this site :
This site presents firstly the Mars Express and the Beagle 2 probes through 3 dimensional and interactive models and secondly two virtual reality simulations about the trip to Mars and the landing phase.
The language used is VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language).
