Did you ever wonder about the red tinted images from Mars? No? Maybe that's because you haven't seen any other colorization in the main-stream media like Newspapers and TV. What is the reason for the red picture and especially for the red sky on them? If you ask a Meteorologist about the reason for blue sky on Earth, he will name the Rayleigh scattering If you ask a NASA Scientist about the reason for red sky on Mars, he will name the fine dust in the Atmosphere which scatters light like during sunset on Earth But there are not alway dust-storms on Mars which pollutes the Atmosphere. So there have to be also days which show blue sky! Even NASA / JPL writes in this article about the possibility of blue sky and 3 days before Pathfinder landed, this note appeared in a press release by NASA: "If dust diffuses to the landing site, the sky could turn out to be pink like that seen by Viking," says Philip James of the University of Toledo. "Otherwise, Pathfinder will likely show blue sky with bright clouds."

The Search for Life in our Solar System on Mars and Jupiter's Moons
We are once again on Mars (01/10/04)
NASA has successfully landed a rover on the surface of Mars. The lander came down packaged in a bunch of airbags, bounced many times, and finally came to rest unharmed. Here is the first-ever, full color picture of the surface of Mars. It is quite an improvement in quality compared to the previous surface picture taken by the original rover in 1997.
Take a close look at this surface picture below taken by the rover Spirit. The strange muddy marks you see were created by the airbags of the rover as it bounced and dragged on the ground before coming to a stop. Apparently, something in the martian soil allows what appears to be a muddy track. Notice how the mud material seems to curl upwards, almost like melted plastic. This appears to be a material we have not yet seen on Earth. Could it signify water?
Where does NASA believe Life is likely to exist?
The search for life could ultimatly lead to findings anywhere. However, NASA believes the most likely places within our own solar system to harbor life may have been Mars, some time ago. There may also exist underground tunnels of water and lakes which currently harbor life forms such as bacteria. Another place scientists are very interested in as a source of life, is one of Jupiter's moons, Europa.
Whats so special about Europa? What is it anyway?

During their missions, the two Viking landers vaporized Martian dirt and scrutinized the samples for signs of organic - or carbon-based - molecules that could serve as the raw ingredients for life. At the time, all they found were chlorine compounds attributed to contamination, but the new research suggests the Viking probes' heat-treatment may have generated these chlorine compounds from naturally occurring Martian organics, destroying them in the process. "This doesn't say anything about the question of whether or not life has existed on Mars, but it could make a big difference in how we look for evidence to answer that question," study co-author Chris McKay, of NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif., said in a statement. http://www.marsnews.com/archives/2010/09/14/building_blocks_for_life_on_mars_possibly_seen_by_viking_probes_study_suggests.html

Mars Orbiter Camera
Captioned Image Releases
The Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) first acquired images of Mars during its approach to the red planet in mid-1997. The spacecraft began orbiting Mars in September 1997. Following a period of aerobraking to achieve a nearly-circular, nearly-polar orbit, MGS began systematic mapping operations in March 1999. The primary mission was conducted for one Mars year, through January 2001. An extended mission phase followed and the spacecraft and MOC were active until 2 November 2006, when communication with the spacecraft was lost. If the spacecraft is recovered, the mission is expected to operate through at least September 2007. More than 1,600 MOC images with captions describing their contents have been compiled and released by the MOC team at Malin Space Science Systems since 1997. The links below provide access to these captioned releases. Click on one of the links below for an index, with icons, of images released during that month. Don't worry, you'll feel right at home since it is a retro future in which flashlights and many other technologies haven't advanced at all in almost two centuries. The movie's unluckily possessed humans, a group of miners, look like members of the heavy metal band KISS. They run around like cave men, yell like wild animals and decorate their bodies through massive self-mutilation. Those going in hopes of the over-the-top fun of Carpenter's last picture, VAMPIRES, will leave disappointed. Here the action is merely ridiculous without the energetic fun of VAMPIRES. Still, after a lifeless first act, the movie does pick up the pace in the middle. The ending, however, doesn't hang together. The result is an uneven movie that's much less hit than miss.

View other movie reviews Find a movie: John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars It's quite a feat to make a horror movie as boring as John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars . Maybe Carpenter ( John Carpenter's Vampires John Carpenter's Escape From L.A. ) should think more before having his name plastered right before the film title, as he seems so fond of doing. More films like this one are liable to ruin his fading reputation. Ghosts of Mars is a horror movie disguised as science fiction. The 'aliens' are not really aliens, they are actually zombies. Aside from the setting and the clothes, there is nothing to really say this film takes place in distant 2176 A.D. Mars is a mining colony, similar in many ways to the Old West. Settlers live off the land, which is desolate and arid. The zombies even resemble archaic stereotypes of 'natives.' The premise of the story is that a group of policemen are going to transport James "Desolation" Williams (Ice Cube, Next Friday Three Kings ) to Shining Station, one of the many outposts on Mars.

John Carpenter John Carpenter's Ghosts Of Mars is reminiscent of the science fiction B films of decades past. The only problem is that here the "B" is for bad filmmaking. The type of stinker you would expect in the final days of the summer movie season, Ghosts Of Mars is yet another nail in the coffin of the career of John Carpenter. The story is set in the year 2176, where the Angry Red Planet is being used as a strip mine. A group of police officers are sent to a mining town to pick up and escort a criminal named James "Desolation" Williams (Ice Cube) back for arraignment. However, when the squad arrives in town, they find it to be deserted save a few prisoners and Williams. The squad soon discovers that the miners have not deserted the town. Instead, thanks to some mysterious Martian dust, they've been turned into zombies who have a knack for decapitating people, piercing their skin with large metal objects and dressing like rejects from a Marilyn Manson concert. After the squad's commander, Helena (Pam Grier) meets her fate; it is up to policewoman Melanie Ballard (Natasha Henstridge) to lead everyone out of the town and to safety. Naturally, this means she has to trust and rely on Desolation Williams to save the day. In many ways, Ghosts Of Mars resembles Carpenter's Assault On Precinct 13. In both films, the hero has to trust and rely on a criminal to help get a group of people trapped in an abandoned area to safety. The only difference between that 1976 film and this movie is that Assault was actually a great little film, lean, fast paced and exciting. Ghosts Of Mars, on the other hand, lumbers along like a bloated corpse, chock full of inane dialogue and ridiculous storytelling (there are so many flashbacks that for a while I thought I was watching Memento In Space). There are also clichés that pass themselves off for characters, lifeless directing and acting unworthy of a junior high-school play. Even the factors we would expect to be halfway decent, namely the action scenes, visual and makeup effects, are substandard.

View other movie reviews Find a movie: Mission to Mars The name Mission to Mars immediately brings up one of the lesser rides (now, thankfully gone) at Disneyland. In it, people sit around a small screen on the floor and ceiling and the seats inflate and deflate to simulate turbulence. Nothing like old time special effects. In addition, M2M is the name of another of the myriad kiddie bands that pervade pop radio today. That, and in the new Hollywood fashion, another Mars-themed movie, Red Planet , is coming soon, lead to a potentially horrible movie gone awry in Mission to Mars . Thankfully, the movie is not that bad, but it does seem to echo other, better movies. The only thing to go awry (besides the latter part of the script) is the first manned mission to Mars. A team led by Luke Graham (Don Cheadle, Bulworth, Out of Sight ) encounters what looks like water. When they go to investigate, something strange happens, and no one is heard from again. A rescue team led by Woody Blake (Tim Robbins, Arlington Road , Nothing to Lose ) goes to Mars to recover any survivors. With Blake are his wife Terri Fisher (Connie Nielsen

Widescreen enhanced and exceptionally well done. There are lots of brilliant rich colors as well as the deep blacks of space, and this DVD pulls them all off perfectly. Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 and it is used very well here. Sometimes SciFi movies go over the top, but this one makes good use of both your subwoofer and rear speakers without being obnoxious. Most of the time the sound is oriented toward front center, it only goes for surround and boom when the scene calls for it. Extras: The usual audio commentary and trailers are here, but we also get a documentary and some really neat stuff relating to the making of the visual effects including an animatics to final scene comparisons.

99. The Tim Burton Collective - Mars Attacks!
Multimedia, quotes, and forum.
http://www.timburtoncollective.com/mars.html
Mars Attacks! is Tim Burtons homage to the 50's and 60's science fiction movies he grew up watching. It's based on a trading cards set released by the Topps in the 60's. Mars Attacks! ranks as one of the biggest financial failures in Burtons career, and it received pretty mixed reviews. However with its top notch cast, over the top performances and quirky humour, it has gained a well earned cult status among fans. The film continued Burton's love-affair with Ed Wood. It was his first attempt at wild and crazy comedy since Beetlejuice and while it's not quite as good as that film it's certainly not a failure. It certainly deserved more success in America, but at least it did do a lot better in Europe.
Visually, this is as good as anything Burton's done, even if it is deliberately cheesy-looking in places. The Martians (the best thing in the movie) are brilliantly computer animated 'toons that are surprisingly likeable in their callous mayhem. All we ever hear them say is 'Ack-ack!' and the reasons for their invasion is never given. Misunderstanding, hatred of humans - who cares? Compared to them, the humans are so boring and/or obnoxious that they deserve to get fried.
