The atolls and islands are situated in two almost parallel chain-like formations known as the Ratak (Sunrise) group and Ralik (Sunset) group. The total number of islands and islets in the whole Republic is approximately 1,225 spreading across a sea area of over 750,000 square miles. The total land area is about 70 square miles (181 square kilometers). The mean height of the land is about 7 feet above sea level (2 meters). Climate RMI Average Monthly Rainfall and Temperature, 1959-1995 (Majuro Weather Station) Rainfall varies greatly throughout the Marshall Islands. In the wet, southern atolls, rainfall can average as much as 160 inches per year, while the dry, northern atolls may only average 20 inches. When rain does fall is often heavy. There is also a wet and dry season, with the wettest months being between May and November. Weather data for Marshall Islands is provided by the Majuro Weather Station. The station at Majuro is located on the southeastern end of the Majuro Atoll. This atoll is approximately 160 square miles in area with a lagoon of about 150 square miles. The lagoon is oblong, 22 miles long and about 4 miles wide. The station is located at Delap.

    Abstract
The report reviews the present knowledge on coral gravel spreads or scatters, the most common archaeological site type in the Marshall Islands. Hithertoprehistoric and historic gravel spreads could not be distinguished. A thesis to distinguish the two is advanced, based on a study of ethnographically recorded and modern housing, as well as based on the observations of burnt-down houses. The dating is based on the fact that modern houses are built close to the ground and coral gravel is not spread underneath them. Traditional houses onthe other hand had no walls and coral gravel had been spread underneath the roofed area. Thus traditional coral gravel spreads are likely to represent acontinuous scatter of coral gravel, while modern scatters are likely show up agap where the house once stood.
    Introduction
By far the most common archaeological feature in the Republic of the Marshall Islands are scatters of coral gravel, commonly oval to roundish in shape. These scatters, then as well as today, signify the presence of a household. In there cent past several surveys of islands in the Marshall Islands have been conducted and such scatters have been found. Until now they could not be positively identified as historic or prehistoric unless datable material was found on them.

Marshall Islands Environment - current issues
Marshall Islands Geography Environment - current issues: inadequate supplies of potable water; pollution of Majuro lagoon from household waste and discharges from fishing vessels Definition: This entry lists the most pressing and important environmental problems. The following terms and abbreviations are used throughout the entry:
Acidification - the lowering of soil and water pH due to acid precipitation and deposition usually through precipitation; this process disrupts ecosystem nutrient flows and may kill freshwater fish and plants dependent on more neutral or alkaline conditions (see acid rain).
Acid rain - characterized as containing harmful levels of sulfur dioxide or nitrogen oxide; acid rain is damaging and potentially deadly to the earth's fragile ecosystems; acidity is measured using the pH scale where 7 is neutral, values greater than 7 are considered alkaline, and values below 5.6 are considered acid precipitation; note - a pH of 2.4 (the acidity of vinegar) has been measured in rainfall in New England.
Aerosol - a collection of airborne particles dispersed in a gas, smoke, or fog.
