The country consists of twenty-nine atolls and five isolated islands. The most important atolls and islands form two groups: the Ratak Chain and the Ralik Chain (meaning "sunrise" and "sunset" chains). Two-thirds of the nation's population lives on Majuro (which is also the capital) and Ebeye. The outer islands are sparsely populated due to lack of employment opportunities and economic development. Life on the outer atolls is generally still fairly traditional, and the nutrition of the rural population, consuming food that is either grown or caught, is superior to that of most of the urban residents, who rely considerably on white rice. A majority of the islands' land mass is at sea level.
The uninhabited atolls are:
Ailinginae Atoll
Bikar (Bikaar) Atoll
Bikini Atoll
Bokak Atoll
Erikub Atoll
Jemo Island Nadikdik (Knox) Atoll Rongerik Atoll Toke Atoll Ujelang Atoll The climate is hot and humid, with a wet season from May to November. The islands occasionally suffer from typhoons. Many Pacific typhoons start in the Marshall Islands region and grow stronger as they move west toward the Mariana Islands and the Philippines.

Ailuk Atoll was claimed by the Empire of Germany along with the rest of the Marshall Islands in 1884, and the Germans established a trading outpost. After World War I , the island came under the South Pacific Mandate of the Empire of Japan . Following the end of World War II , it came under the control of the United States as part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands until the independence of the Marshall Islands in 1986.

The Republic of the Marshall Islands ( RMI ) is about midway between Hawaii and Australia.
First settled by Micronesian navigators, they were subsequently controlled ( some say exploited ) by Spain and Germany, and finally by Japan.
Prior to the beginning of World War II, the Japanese fortified some of the atolls as a defensive measure. When that war ended with Japan's defeat, the United States was given total control.
For almost 40 years the islands were under U.S. administration as the easternmost part of the United Nation's Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands.
The United States used some of these isolated atolls for nuclear testing between 1947 and 1962. Long term affects are yet to be totally understood, and damage claims are still in the courts to this day.
In 1986 the islands gained independence under a Compact of Free Association with the United States. Under the terms of that agreement, the U.S would provide significant financial aid, that to date now exceeds $1 billion.
The Marshall Islands include the Ratak ( sunrise chain ) and Ralik ( sunset chain ), two parallel chains of 29 coral atolls, thousands of tiny islets, and hundreds of very small low-lying islands, all scattered over a wide area of the Pacific Ocean.

Nauru, Kiribati and Federated States of Micronesia are its neighbour countries. Majuro (Delap) is the capital of the Marshall Islands, which cover a total area of 181 sq km. The country gained its independence from the US in 1986, and is now a democratic presidential republic. English and Marshallese are official languages of the Marshall Islands. In the past decade the economy of Marshall Islands has not experienced stable growth, the country has been defined as the “best performer” for ease and low costs in employing and firing employees, at the same time giving a poor evaluation for its investor protection schemes and contract enforcement. Foreign investments as well as tourism have been declining sectors over the past years. Agriculture is based on smaller size farms. Coconuts, tomatoes and melons are the most important agricultural products used for commercial purposes. Fish processing and handicrafts are the only industries of the country. Energy costs are extremely high within the Marshall Islands.
The US provide economic support to the Marshall Islands, as well as hold there a missile defense test site, for which the land owners are paid rent fees. Among other countries that grant aid to the Marshall Islands it is necessary to note the following countries: Taiwan, Japan, Australia and the EU.
