The smaller macropods are found in Australia and New Guinea Larger kangaroos have adapted much better to changes brought to the Australian landscape by humans and though many of their smaller cousins are endangered, they are plentiful. They are not farmed to any extent, but wild kangaroos are shot for meat, leather hides , sport, and to protect grazing land for sheep and cattle. Although there is some controversy, harvesting kangaroo meat has many environmental and health benefits over traditional meats.

Ross River Virus
Ground breaking new research is paving the way to understanding and addressing the transmission of Ross River virus into the equine population.
by Dr J.H. Stewart

BVSc BSc PhD MRCVS Dip BEP AAIM
Equine Veterinarian and Consultant Nutritionist
The most common mosquito-borne disease in Australia, the Ross River virus is not only contracted by approximately 5000 people each year but also affects a number of animal species - including horses. While in humans, the infection generally results in a flu-like period of illness often coupled with joint pain and fatigue, many horses that are exposed to the disease show no outward clinical signs, yet raised antibody levels (indicating the presence of an infection) can usually be detected in their blood. In other equine cases, the Ross River virus can cause lethargy, poor performance, stiffness, joint disease and nervous system disruption.
Transmission
Although the life cycle of the Ross River virus is predominantly maintained by the interaction of mosquitoes with mammals such as the Western Grey kangaroo, some marsupials, wild rodents and possibly fruit bats, horses and humans tend to become involved as hosts to the disease when certain favourable environmental conditions exist. Immediately following heavy rains and/or a period of flooding is the perfect time for mosquito colonies to flourish, therefore the risk of being bitten by an infected insect is far greater than it would be in the same area during a drier period. There is also a theory that mosquito eggs can exist in the environment for a long time once laid, only hatching with the onset of the right weather conditions, which may explain the rapid appearance of cases of Ross River disease after heavy rains.

Current News Mama na Dada Guardians Poultry Project
One of our major projects this quarter was the construction of this chicken house, which will soon house eighty-eight birds for laying. The project will be owned and operated by the guardians of all the orphaned children at Mama na Dada Daycare in Kunya Village. The guardians know that the low levels of protein in the children's diet impacts their health. To improve the nutrition of the children, they asked us to help them start an egg producing business. The structure is necessary because chickens are very vulnerable to the local wildlife, eagles, marsupials, wild dogs, hyenas and baboons. The guardians are a remarkable group of elderly women who labour extremely hard to provide for the children from what they grow on their land. The eggs will be given to the centre to feed the children, with the excess being sold at the market to provide income for the guardians. We look forward to updating you again once the chickens have been bought and have started producing.
Kanyala Rainwater Harvesting System
In May, we installed a rainwater harvesting system for our partner school in the town of Mbita. The school had been spending more on purchasing water, which is brought up from Lake Victoria on the backs of donkeys, then all other expenses put together. Attendance at the school, particularly by girls, falls off sharply during the dry season as children need to walk further to carry water back to their homes. Last year, in the middle of one of the worst droughts in Kenyan history, the school was forced to stop paying its teachers for several months in order to procure the needed water. This system, constituting two 3,000 litter tanks and girders to surround the ceiling of the school and collect rainwater, will store enough water during the rainy season to carry them through the dry season. By providing water for the children to take home, the school will be able to boost attendance and redirect its budget towards improving teacher's salaries and classroom conditions.
