After a full day of programming challenges involving using numeric integration and optimization to solve orbital navigation problems, parallelizing a solution to the Traveling Salesperson Problem, benchmarking high performance machines, and calculating future costs and speeds of supercomputers, the team consisting of Jacob Hurwitz, David Kaufman, Lori Kaufman, and Charlie Pasternak placed first in the high school division. The Verona Computational Science Teacher Leader Award Featured Student Projects Parallel Computing Global Warming Modeling a Squirrel Population Research Projects Computational Literacy Parallel Programming Contest The Blair Magnet Team composed of Andrew Das Sarma, Jacob Hurwitz, Anand Oza, Rohan Puttagunta, Chenyu Zhao, and alternate David Tolnay, tied for first place in the Student Programming Contest held on November 16 during the SC09 Conference Education Program in Portland, Oregon. The team was given eight hours to solve six problems involving methods to numerically find the minimum of complex non-linear functions, to find the entropy of various tilings in 2-D space, to encrypt and decrypt embedded messages efficiently, to benchmark a system for distributed memory computers, and to implement matrix multiplication for a multi-core system. The team competed against 7 other teams representing universities around the country. The other first place team represented the computer science department from the University of Delaware.

It consists of two components: a Leadership Program and a Satellite Program. In the Leadership Program, held at Towson University, up to 120 Fellows learn to be leaders in bringing about effective technology integration in instruction that supports the Maryland Content Standards. In this train-the-trainers model, Fellows learn strategies for helping other teachers use technology more successfully in instruction. A two-day Administrators' Symposium for principals shows administrators how Fellows can assist in creating an (more) effective technology program. Maryland State Department of Education, Johns Hopkins University and Towson University coordinate this program. In regional Satellite Programs that are held throughout Maryland, Associates learn how to improve technology integration in their own classroom instruction. This year, nearly 600 educators are taking part in twenty programs. These programs are coordinated by Maryland State Department of Education, awarded through a competitive RFP and run by a cooperative workgroup composed of professional development, technology and content specialists in each school district. Academy Fellows assist in program design and instruction.

Media Center Mrs. Susan Jervis, Media Specialist Mrs. Vanessa Anderson, Media Assistant Awards 1996 Mae I. Graham Award for Outstanding Media Program in the state of Maryland The Media Center at Thurgood Marshall Elementary School has a collection of over 13,000 print and non-print materials including books, periodicals, videos, laser disks, and CD ROMs. The Research Learning Hub includes seven networked Macintosh computers and a Macintosh multimedia machine. These are used by the students to access the library's computerized Patrons' Catalog as well as for research. An on-line encyclopedia, atlases, magazine index, educational stand-alone CD ROMs, and various software programs are available for student use. The library's circulation system is computerized and students check-out over 200 items daily including CD ROMS. The Media Specialist meets with classes regularly in the media center to teach students research skills and how to become independent users of the library.
