Win US visa in the US Green card lottery and travel to Maryland, a Mid-Atlantic state which is situated on the eastern coast of America. It was admitted to the Union as early as 1788 as the seventh state. Maryland shares its border with Pennsylvania, Virginia, Delaware, and Virginia. The nicknames given to this state are the ‘Free State’ and the ‘Old Line State’.
For a tourist traveling on an American visa, Maryland offers numerous places worth visiting. See the heroes in wax at National Great Blacks in Wax Museum; also visit National Vigilance Park located at Fort Meade where invisible heroes are remembered. You will also enjoy the scenic drives and the beauty of the coastal areas.
Annapolis is the state capital and home of United States Naval Academy. Baltimore is the most populous city and the cultural and commercial hub. Other important cities are Ellicott City, Rockville, and Salisbury. If you win the diversity lottery, these cities will offer you great opportunities to work and live.
Maryland though small in size, has a varied climate. The coastal areas are hot and humid in summers and cool and chilly in winters. Beyond this area, the rest enjoys a warm continental climate, where summers are moderately hot and winters are moderately cold. Annual rainfall varies from 40-45 inches.

2 History
Greenbelt was settled in as a public cooperative community ("an experiment in American socialism ") in the New Deal Era. The concept was at the same time both eminently practical and idealistically utopian: the federal government would foster an "ideal" self-sufficient cooperative community that would also ease the pressing housing shortage near the nation's capital. Construction of the new town would also create jobs and thus help stimulate the national economic recovery following the Great Depression Greenbelt, which provided affordable housing for federal government workers, was one of three "green" towns planned in

Geography of Maryland
Brief Overview
Maryland Geography Maryland is often called "America in Miniature." Why do you think this is true? The state of Maryland is on the east coast of the United States. It's global address is: latitude 39 degrees north, longitude 77 degrees west. There are beaches, mountains, plains, rivers and the gorgeous Chesapeake Bay for Marylanders to enjoy. The mountains in the western part of the state rise to more than 3000 feet above sea level while Eastern Shore Marylanders splash in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Here are some facts about Maryland:
  • Maryland has 9,874 square miles of land area.
  • Maryland's Chesapeake Bay has 1,726 square miles of water.
  • There are 703 square miles of inland water in Maryland.
Maryland is bordered by four other states in the USA. Can you name them? There are only eight other states in the USA that are smaller than Maryland. Maryland has a very unusual shape. The northern boundary of Maryland was in dispute in 1763 and two astronomer- mathematicians were given the job of surveying the dividing line between Maryland, Pennsylvania and Delaware. This boundary line is straight. We call it the "Mason-Dixon Line" and a marker in Delmar is shown in the picture on the left. The other boudary line of Maryland is quite crooked and that's because it follows a river - the Potomac River. In one place the width of the state is so narrow that a person could walk across it and not need to stop and rest. The distance across the state, between West Virginia and Pennsylvania is not much more than a mile. No other state has a width that is so narrow.
