Massachusetts Churches Oppose Being Treated Fairly
Wednesday December 15, 2004 Non-profit organizations in Massachusetts have to release their financial records to the public. Churches are exempt from this provision and attempts to force them to toe the line with everyone else are being blocked. Why do you suppose they want to be given such privileges? The Boston Globe reports: The Massachusetts Council of Churches, an umbrella organization representing about 1,700 non-Catholic Christian congregations, said the proposed legislation would violate the independence of religious organizations promised by the federal and state constitutions. ... Kessler called the idea of mandatory reporting by churches a ''threateningly slippery slope," and said that as a result of the council's unanimous vote, taken Tuesday night, she will be lobbying legislators to oppose it.
The bill would also require all charitable organizations, including churches, to list their real estate holdings on an annual financial report. ''I can't imagine that any organization that has been allowed to exist in the darkness and then is asked to be treated like any other nonprofit charity is going to be happy about it, because they've had a nice thing going," Walsh, a Boston Democrat, said yesterday. ''But this legislation is respectful of church-state separation. It does not get involved in the governance or belief system of any church."

Parishioners have been conducting a round-the-clock vigil inside St. Anselm while they appeal Archbishop Sean O'Malley's decision to close the parish, part of the belt-tightening move brought on by the archdiocese's financial troubles following clergy sex abuse lawsuit settlements.

Charlestown was originally a separate town and the first capital of the Massachusetts Bay Colony ; it became a city in 1847 and was annexed by Boston on January 5, 1874. While it has had a substantial Irish American population since the migration of Irish during the Irish famine of the 1840s, since the late 1980s the neighborhood has changed dramatically because of its close proximity to downtown, and its colonial architecture.
