      Overview
Materials process engineering is an exciting and important multi-disciplinary field that focuses on the manufacture of high quality, cost effective parts and systems. At Worcester Polytechnic Institute, we believe that the future will not only depend on new materials and manufacturing processes like nanomaterials and biopolymers but also the innovative use of traditional materials and processes like aluminum casting, heat treated steel and powder processing of ceramics. Our commitment to the future shines through both in our multi-disciplinary focus and in our responsiveness to the needs of industry and the consumer. A very large number of faculty which includes manufacturing and materials engineering programs faculty as well as the management and industrial engineering faculty serve this new M.S. program. These faculty bring expertise in each of the areas important to Materials Process Engineering including manufacturing systems and process design, analysis and control materials processes and processing - structure - processing relationships in materials. We work in a relaxed, informal, and friendly environment. Being a new program each student receives special attention to help guide them in their course and project selection to meet the student's goals and objectives.

Green materials
4 June 2003 Stuart Nathan Stuart Nathan looks at some of the advances in processing techniques which are making polymer production more environmentally friendly. Plastics manufacturers are increasingly concerned with improving their environmental performance. Generally, their improvements are similar to those seen elsewhere in the process industries - use less power, produce less waste, substitute harmful and hazardous materials for more innocuous alternatives where possible. However, some plastics makers and polymer scientists are taking a different approach. One aspect of environmentally-friendly production is concerned with making sure that the plastic is easy to recycle, with minimal processing needed to return used materials to a virgin state, or as near as possible. One such plastic is currently being developed by BP Amoco Fabrics under the name Curv. Developed at Leeds University, Curv is an apparent contradiction in terms - a composite which has only one component. It's made entirely from polypropylene, but has similar properties to glass fibre-reinforced composites.

Utigard (MSE) Cluster Description The members of this cluster study inorganic molecular interactions in natural and industrial systems in order to develop fundamental knowledge and create new efficient processes. Society is always seeking stronger, lighter, more durable, more recyclable material which can be produced with less energy and less waste. Examples of these materials are the insulating tiles of the space shuttle, the nano-crystalline metals, amorphous metal glasses and atomic cluster catalysts, the high surface area carbon powders, and the nickel and diamond coated ceramics. New resources are brought into play by processes that stretch the limits of material properties such as the acidic, high pressure and temperature leaching of nickel laterite ores in titanium vessels. Acidic gases from industrial processes are captured and converted to liquid sulphur for use in waste water treatment systems. Hydrogen is split from water for use in fuel cells. Energy capturing high temperature kilns convert wastes to useful chemical products for the pulp and paper industry. The field is always advancing and always challenging!

The Brimacombe Prize
The Brimacombe Prize has been awarded every two years since being first awarded at the Brimacombe Memorial Symposium held in Vancouver, British Columbia, October 1-4, 2000. The Brimacombe Prize recognizes outstanding achievements in materials process engineering and is presented in memory of Dr. J. Keith Brimacombe, an innovative giant in the field of materials process engineering during the later quarter of the 20th century. This Prize consists of both an artistic rendering and an award of $15,000 CDN. The Permanent Prize As a permanent record, each Prize recipient is awarded a sculpturesque depiction of a modern-day Atlas representing a portrait of fortitude. The dramatic steps of this artistic piece evidence an ascent to the top. Atlas, as we know from mythology, is a timeless figure symbolizing persistence in a journey. Characteristically, the J. Keith Brimacombe Prize recognizes determination and professional achievement that is forever in style and not easily forgotten. Etched in the base of the award are the qualities that give form to the purpose of the man and the award while recognizing the accomplishments of its recipient.
