Uncle Henry was driving to Halifax when he spotted a big green gorilla on the side of the road. He screeched to a stop, jumped out of his car. He saw the outline of a number on the gorilla. He couldn't quite see the number, but he knew it was a 4 digit number. And:
        1) He remembered seeing a number 1. 2) In the hundred's place he remembers the number is 3 times the number in the thousand's place. 3) He said the number in the one's place is 4 times the number in the ten's place. 4) Finally he said the number 2 is sitting in the thousand's place.

    Introduction:
The Word Problems are listed by grade and, within each grade, by theme. I always find that providing a seasonal worksheet helps keep my daughter excited about doing her work. The grade levels are a guideline please use your judgment based on your child's ability and eagerness (my eldest daughter always used a grade below whereas my younger daughter seems to be a grade or two above go figure). Keep in mind that Math Word Problems require reading, comprehension and math skills so a child who is good at basic math equations may struggle more than you would expect when faced with math word problems. All word problems are dynamic (in other words, they regenerate a new problem each time you open them or click refresh on your browser). The words in the particular problem will not change but the numbers will. Children who struggle converting a word problem into a math equation will find it reassuring (confidence builder) to revisit the same verbal clues with different numbers, so consider printing a couple regenerations of each problem. In a classroom setting you can provide a problem to partners or a group of students to solve together and then provide a regeneration of the same problem for the children to do solo.

Here we introduce the RQWQCQ strategy for solving math word problems. RQWQWCQ stands for Read, Question, Write, Question, Compute, Question. Read First, read the entire problem. The purpose or reading the problem is to learn what the problem is about. Based on your learning style it may be useful for you to draw a diagram of the picture, read the problem out load, or form a picture of the problem in your mind. Question Write Question Compute Question After you have what you believe to be the correct answer, look at your answer and ask yourself if your answer looks like the correct answer based on the information presented in the problem. If your answer does not appear to you to be possible then go back through the RQWQCQ steps until you have the right answer. A Strategy for Solving Math Word Problems
Word problems challenge students of all ages especially when they involve math. The SQRQCQ strategy to solving math problems can be used in education programs of all levels. It can also be adapted to meet the needs of special education settings. SQRQCQ stands for Survey, Question, Read, Question, Compute, Question
      1. Survey the Math Problem
When trying to solve a math word problem the first thing you should do is read the entire problem in order to get a good idea of what the problem is about. Try to determine what the problem is requiring, what parts of the problem are most important and if there is any information in the problem that is not relevant to solving the problem.
      2. Question
Now that you're familiar with the problem try and figure out what the problem is asking you to do (i.e. estimate, caluculate area, multiply, etc.) You can't solve a problem is you don't know what you're trying to solve.
