Welcome to IAFE The IAFE is a not-for-profit, professional society dedicated to fostering the profession of quantitative finance by providing platforms to discuss cutting-edge and pivotal issues in the field. Founded in 1992, the IAFE is composed of individual academics and practitioners from banks, broker dealers, hedge funds, pension funds, asset managers, technology firms, regulators, accounting, consulting and law firms, and universities across the globe.
Financial Engineering Today An IAFE survey in cooperation with SunGard Adaptiv AFTER THE CRISIS:
Re-engineering Risk Management? Thoughts from market experts including senior fellows and members of the board of directors of International Association of Financial Engineers (IAFE)
The recent financial crisis exposed many flaws in the business procedures and incentive models within the global financial sector. After more than 20 months of analysis, debate, bail out plans, and crisis talks; local, global, internal, and public scrutiny have left us speculating whether the financial sector will ever regain its reputation. Meanwhile proposals for global regulation from nation states (particularly the US and UK), international entities (such as the EU, BIS, G20, IMF), and private institutions (such as ISDA and IOSCO), are forcing institutions to look into every aspect of their risk management functions. This paper gathers the thoughts and opinions of senior fellows and members of the board of directors of the International Association of Financial Engineers (IAFE) who talk openly about the issues surrounding the stability of the financial engineering community and what needs to be done to control the complexity of financial risk management.

"LIEBL METHOD" TO SOLVE FINANCIAL MATHEMATICS PROBLEMS A REFERENCE TO LONG TERM CONTRACTS AND INSTALLMENT OPERATIONS AUTHOR: JONAS LIEBL E-mail: jonasliebl@netpar.com.br THE "LIEBL METHOD" TO SOLVE FINANCIAL MATHEMATICS PROBLEMS The "Liebl Method" is a set of procedures which allows us to solve capitalization plans and amortization systems problems derived from uniform series and arithmetic progression series, making use of a single generic formula.
Therefore it deals with the French System of Amortization, the American System, the Canadian Mortgage, the German System, the Series in Crescent and Decreasing Gradients, the Compound System of Amortization with Real Crescent Installments, the Constant Amortization System and the Compound System of Amortization, as well as the capitalization of the respective series. It can be operated by calculators that have the SOLVER function, reaching its full potential with calculators that deals with algebraic object - as the ones from the family of the Hewlett Packard 48 - and with the EXCEL electronic spread sheet from Microsoft. GENERIC FORMULA WITH FOCUS DATE IN THE DATE OF THE LAST PAYMENT (FOCUS DATE "N"): PV - PRESENT VALUE
Present value, also known as actual value, capital, principal, loan value or value of the financing.

Inconsistent mathematics is the study of the mathematical theories that result when classical mathematical axioms are asserted within the framework of a (non-classical) logic which can tolerate the presence of a contradiction without turning every sentence into a theorem. Inconsistent Mathematics
First published Tue Jul 2, 1996; substantive revision Thu Jul 31, 2008 Inconsistent mathematics is the study of the mathematical theories that result when classical mathematical axioms are asserted within the framework of a (non-classical) logic which can tolerate the presence of a contradiction without turning every sentence into a theorem.
1. Inconsistent Mathematics
Inconsistent Mathematics began historically with foundational considerations. Set-theoretic paradoxes such as Russell's led to attempts to produce a consistent set theory as a foundation for mathematics. But, as is well known, set theories such as ZF, NBG and the like were in various ways ad hoc. Hence, a number of people including da Costa (1974), Brady (1971), (1989), Priest, Routley, and Norman (1989), considered it preferable to retain the full power of the natural abstraction principle (every predicate determines a set), and tolerate a degree of inconsistency in set theory. Brady, in particular, has extended, streamlined and simplified these results on naive set theory in his book (2006); for a clear account see also Restall's review (2007) These constructions require, of course, that one dispense with the logical principle

The suggested collection of mathematical folklore might be enjoyable for mathematicians and for students because every joke contains a portion of truth or lie about our profession. The selected jokes and sayings contain something essential about mathematics, the mathematical way of thinking, or mathematical pop-culture.
We have slightly edited and systematized selected jokes, and added a few new ones. We are concerned that publication of sacral lecture jokes may endanger the respect to math. teachers in freshmen classes. Our excuse for this risky ethnographic research is that the majority of the jokes already exists on the Internet. Sometimes, people tend to attribute the jokes either to their beloved teachers (Peter Lax is so far the champion) or to legendary figures as Norbert Wiener or Paul Erdos; similarly, physical jokes are attributed to Albert Einstein or Niels Bohr and geometrical theorems - to Euclid. A number of collected jokes we learned from our professors in Saint-Petersburg. Generally, attributing the jokes is hopeless. Indeed, the phrasing of the narrator is as important as the essence of the humor (if this essence does exist at all). To our mind, a joke goes to "public domain" immediately after being created or modified and there should be no authorship in it. Most of the collected sayings and jokes are repeated in a number of webpages, which makes it difficult to credit a particular Internet source. Instead, we thank all Internet collectors of math. jokes.

Course Units / Type 2 units for each of Preliminary and HSC / Board Developed Course
Prerequisites Stage 5 Mathematics (Any of the three courses is sufficient, however students who studied at the Standard level in Stage 5 are likely to experience difficulty)
Exclusions Nil Outline General Mathematics focuses on mathematical skills and techniques, which have direct application to everyday activity. The course content is written in five areas of study, with an emphasis on application of specific skills and on tasks that involve integrating mathematical skills and techniques across a range of familiar and unfamiliar situations. These tasks may draw from more than one area of study, and encourage transfer of knowledge across the entire course, as well as linking with study in other Stage 6 subjects.
The course is fully prescribed, and is designed to support TAFE and other vocational courses. It provides an appropriate mathematical background for students who do not wish to pursue the formal study of mathematics at tertiary level, while giving a strong foundation for university study in the areas of business, humanities, nursing and paramedical sciences.
