Mathematical Tools for Physics
Physics 315, University of Miami
James Nearing
This text is in PDF format, and is my attempt to provide a less expensive alternative to some of the printed books currently available for this course. If you find any mistakes or any parts that are unclear or any topics that you think I should not have omitted, please tell me. I intend this for the undergraduate level, providing a one-semester bridge between some of the introductory math courses and the physics courses in which we expect to use the mathematics. This is the course typically called Mathematical Methods in Physics. The text itself has been expanded so that it now contains far more than a one semester course. The text is available as a single file to download and save, or as the separate chapters. The advantage of the single file is that the internal hyperlinks will take you anywhere in the book, while the internal links in the separate chapters are confined to that chapter. The single file contains a full index (also linked). If you want to read this on the screen there are two formats. The first is for a smaller screen and is formatted so that the page is wider than it is tall. The format for a large monitor is designed with small margins, so that you can more easily use a two-page display.

Research Activities
My work focuses on mathematical physics, with an emphasis on string theory, M-theory, and gauge theories more generally.
My work places particular emphasis on the underlying mathematical structures and applications to and from modern mathematics.
Specific research interests include:
  • The theory of branes and generalized abelian gauge theories in supergravity.
This involves interesting topological issues related to generalized differential cohomology theories, especially K-theory.
There are also interesting relations to the theory of self-dual fields, anomaly cancellation, and noncommutative geometry.

Each of the first-level and second-level modules starts with a geological context in which some maths arises. From there you can go into the "MathHelp Notebook" on that particular topic. There is also a "glossary" of mathematical words, giving a brief explanation of a given keyword and the option to go to the relevant module. This glossary can be accessed in two ways: either by choosing "Index" below, or by clicking on a highlighted keyword in one of the modules. You are strongly advised to have a pen and paper to hand, to make notes and work things out as you go through.

They are examples only, and their use is not mandatory. Teachers are encouraged to experiment with them in order to determine how they may be best used. They are designed for use with Microsoft Excel 97 and should be compatible with later versions of Excel (e.g. Excel 98). They are not compatible with earlier versions of Excel such as Excel 5.0 or with other spreadsheets such as Lotus 123. NOTE: It is recommended that you do not change the filenames, as some of the macros within them rely on writing to the existing filename.

    Geoffrey Dixon
, 10 October 1997. The slippery gooiness of biology is a consequence of its incredible complexity, consisting as it does of complex systems based upon chemistry. And chemistry obeys the rules of physics, which exists because of, and is consequently best described by, mathematics. Mathematics is the ur-fluid of Reality (gad, how poetic), and our symbollic attempts to represent mathematics have given us windows through which our mushy grey-matter can peer, and with which this same mushy grey-matter becomes altered, and we call this alteration understanding (a frequently generous appellation). The purpose of these pages is to press our noses against some of the windows that look upon biological systems, and to do it in as interactive and stimulating a way as possible, given the talents of we the page creators. There are four of us: Geoffrey Dixon, Steven Karel, Frank Lonberg and Mike Casey. This site will be evolving rapidly, so things will likely be different each time you look. The Movie
An introduction to how hedge funds use mathematical models to value derivatives and other financial instruments
By Jerry Marlow The modern, sophisticated way to think of investing is this: Every financial forecast is a probability distribution. To value an investment is to e valuate its probability distribution. This principle applies to every type of investment, not just stocks and options but also to bonds, commodities, collateralized debt obligations and other derivative securities. Stochastic calculus and Monte Carlo simulations allow you to evaluate probability distributions and value investments. The easiest way to understand these fundamental principles of modern financial theory is to gain an understanding of how probability distributions determine the value of stock options. The fastest and easiest way to understand how probability distributions determine the value of stock options is with the stock option simulator. With the stock option simulator, not only can you understand these principles, you can see how to apply them to investing in stock options. If you've read about the credit crisis and heard of mortgage- backed securities and other derivative instruments being "marked to model" but weren't entirely clear on what the expression meant, the movie above lets you watch a model value stock options. Related models value credit derivatives and other financial contracts.
