http://www.africatravelling.net/mauritania/nouakchott/nouakchott_culture.htm
Nouakchott - Culture It is Mauritania's administrative and economic centre and is served by an international airport and a seaport nearby. Its population is 600,000 (1987 estimate). From its beginnings as a village in the desert on the route north from Dakar, the community grew after being chosen to be the site of the national capital in 1957, three years before Mauritania achieved full independence. The National School of Administration (1966), the National Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (1961), the National Library, and the National Archives are all here. In Nouakchott, the capital, temperatures reach about 33°C (92°F) in the hottest months and average about 13°C (56°F) in the coolest month. Nouakchott has an average rainfall of 178 mm (7 in) a year. About 75% of Mauritanians are Moors who speak an Arabic dialect called Hassaniyah. They are a traditional nomadic people of the desert and savannah areas, but a prolonged drought in the 1970s caused a massive movement into cities such as Nouakchott. The nomadic population some 83% of the total in 1963 was reduced to only 25% by 1986.

Please see the talk page for more information. (November 2010) Women in Atar Mauritania Factors that conditioned the role of women in Mauritanian society in the late included the impact of Islam and sharia (Islamic law); West African influences that allowed women substantial independence in some social and economic areas; economic modernization , which challenged customary behavior patterns in some areas; and Mauritania's rapid pace of urbanization , which subjected traditional nomadic customs to new scrutiny. Many women in such urban centers as Nouakchott, for example, were born in the rural interior of the country and found their childhood training challenged by changing urban social conditions. Girls' education took place primarily at home and emphasized homemaking skills. Some girls attended Quranic schools, but their training was usually limited to learning verses from the Quran and attaining minimal literacy skills. A mother's responsibility toward her daughter traditionally included instruction in household and family affairs and childrearing. In recent decades, fathers were responsible for financing any formal education for their children, but a father's most important responsibility toward his daughters was to prepare them for marriage, primarily by ensuring their physical attractiveness. In Maurtitania, women are considered beautiful if they are moderately to morbidly

Mauritania outlaws slavery afrol News , 9 August Mauritanian lawmakers yesterday outlawed slavery in the desert country. With effect, those found promoting slavery or practising the century old culture will face between five and 10 years in prison. The leader of the anti-slavery group, SOS-Esclaves, Boubacar Ould Messaoud, expressed satisfaction about the development, describing it as “a great victory for the democrats and the people of Mauritania."
He also praised the government and president of Mauritania for ensuring that slavery is finally outlawed in the country, after years of struggles and appeals.
The culture was first abolished by a presidential decree in 1981. However, the decree is not supported by any criminal act, prompting human rights bodies to mount pressures on the Mauritanian government to criminalise the act.
Some anti-slave activists believe that over 500,000 slaves exist in Mauritania, enough reasons for offenders to carry harsh penalties.

    Mauritania
Mauritania is hot almost throughout the whole year. Most of the country has common desert climate, only the southern parts near Senegal River have savannah climate. Canary current regularly causes fog in costal areas, which moderates high temperatures and lack of rainfall. In the westernmost region of Africa, Mauritania looks out onto the Atlantic Ocean surrounded by a great African culture based in antiquity. Officially referred to as the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, this country is largely overrun by the immense Sahara Desert interspersed with oasis communities in the lower lands. Nouakchott, the capital and largest city, was only recently founded in 1960. While it is a young city, it is still a great city to be immersed in the traditional African culture. The National Library and National Archives hold ancient African treasures of prehistoric art, scripts, woven blankets, and old tools. The Nouakchott Museum exhibits many ancient African relics, statues, and artwork. The Nouakchott Silver Market is a great place to find tribal silverworks such as silver trinkets embellished by hand, jewelry, teapots and unique statuettes. Nouakchott is the place to go if you want a meteorite fragment that crashed in the Sahara Desert, as they are readily available. Other interesting sites include The Central Mosque, The Plage du Wharf, a renowned African carpet maker, and the crowded camel trading market. On the perimeter of the city, you can find desert beaches and a lively fisherman's wharf where you can sample many local seafood delicacies prepared with many regional spices and vegetables.
