    GEOGRAPHY
Mauritius Table of Contents Mauritius and Rodrigues are part of the Mascarene Islands, a chain of volcanic islands that include Reunion, the nation's nearest neighbor at 145 kilometers to the southwest and governed as an overseas territory ( département ) of France. The islands are perched on submarine ridges, including the Mascarene Plateau that runs for some 3,000 kilometers in an arc bowed outward from the African mainland, and the Rodrigues Fracture Zone that ripples eastward and connects this underwater plateau with the massive Mid-Indian Ridge. Lowland plains and gently undulating slopes cover about 46 percent of the total land area. Low-lying plains make up most of the Pamplemousses, Rivière du Rempart, and Flacq districts; southern Grand Port District; the heavily populated northwestern section of Plaines Wilhems District from Beau Bassin to Quatre Bornes and to the sea; and smaller areas around Chemin Grenier. These areas are planted with sugarcane and mixed vegetable crops. The districts of Port Louis and Black River and the more hilly interior plains leading up to the tableland support tea, rice, and sugarcane cultivation and include areas of savanna and scrub forest. The central tableland covers about a quarter of the island. A large plateau spans most of the districts of Moka, eastern Plaines Wilhems, and western Grand Port, where mostly sugarcane and vegetables are harvested, except around Curepipe and Vacoas, where tea is grown. The southern part of the tablelandin the districts of Black River, Savanne, and southern Plaines Wilhems is much smaller and heavily dissected with a diverse topography. It contains tea and forest plantations, including reserves of indigenous trees.

    Mauritius Geography
Mauritius geography states that the island is located on the eastern regions of Madagascar at a distance of 800 km. The country lies between 19º59' S and 20º32' S latitude and between 57º18' E and 57º49' E longitude. The island of Mauritius is 61 km long and 46 km wide. The total land area of the country, as per the Mauritius geography, is 2040 square km. The Rodrigues Island, a part of the country, is located 600 km east to Mauritius and covers a total area of 119 square kilometers.
According to the Mauritian geography , along with the twin island of Reunion, Mauritius is a part of the Mascarene Islands. The archipelago of Mauritius was constructed due to a series of volcanic eruptions under the sea bed. The nearest neighbor of Mauritius is the French island of Reunion, which is settled at a distance of 145 kilometers towards the south western border of the country. Along with the Mascarene Plateau, the group of islands in Mauritius is located over some of the submerged ridges in the Indian Ocean. The Mascarene Plateau stretches up to a distance of 3,000 km and is present in the form of an arc that bends in the outward direction. It has its origin in the African land. The submerged plateau is further connected to the huge Mid-Indian Ridge with the help of the Rodrigues Fracture Zone, which runs in the eastern direction.
Although the island of Mauritius was created due to the volcanic eruptions, there is no news of any such occurrence for the past 100,000 years. Mauritius was born some 12 million years back and is covered on all sides with some fractured mountain ranges that stand as tall as 600 to 800 meters. There are slopes present in the center of the island that bend from a height of 300 m, in the northern direction till 600 m in the south western direction.

THE DUTCH THE FRENCH THE ASSEMBLIES
THE BRITISH ABOLITION OF SLAVERY The most important event under the British administration was the abolition of slavery in 1835. EMANCIPATION OF THE SLAVES The colonists opposed the emancipation of the slaves in 1835. British colonies depended on slaves for economical reasons and the sugar industry development needed manpower. The potential uproar was sedated by providing the colonists with a very high compensation. Free but indentured workers from India, eventually fuelled the sudden lack of labour due to the freedom of the slaves. The first importation of Indian human resource to Mauritius was in 1829. But it was only when the slaves were completely emancipated that it became of importance.
The imported Indian labour resulted in an accelerated development of the sugar industry and brought relative prosperity to Mauritius as from 1850. That prosperity of 1850 was also due to a recovery in sugar as an export trad.

    Welcome to Mauritius Geography
    Geography of Mauritius
The land surface of Mauritius embraces the islands of Rodrigues, Agalega, and Cargados Carajos Shoals. Moreover, there are numerous small islands around Mauritius which are being used as natural reserves for the protection of endangered species. The several broken rings of mountain ranges in Mauritius prove its creation by volcanic activities millions of years ago. The highest mountain in Mauritius is Piton De La Petite Riviere Noire which has a height of 828 meters, followed by Pieter Both with a height of 823 meters and finally Le Pouce which is 812 meters high. Prior to its discovery the island was covered with dense forest but with time it has mellowed in an evergreen nature.
The island is divided into 9 administrative divisions called districts and Port Louis is the Capital. Pamplemousses, Riviere Du Rempart, and Flacq District are the low lying plains. Plaine Wilhems district is heavily populated, while Port Louis and Black River gives directly on the western coast. A myriad of sugarcane and vegetables plantations can mainly be found in the district of Moka, western Grand Port and eastern Plaine Wilhems. Black River and Savanne district encloses forest plantations and reserves of indigenous trees. Moreover the island has known the creation of several streams and rivers, the flow of lavas had created several steep grades of lands so as this gave rise to rapids and falls. Deep valleys and Gorges can also be spotted in different parts of the island. The island possesses two natural lakes and they are both crater lakes.
