Grandparents Day is celebrated on the first Sunday after Labor Day (in September). On Grandparents Day, people honor and thank their grandparents. Grandparents Day was declared a holiday in the USA by the US congress in 1978. The congressional proclamation was signed by President Jimmy Carter. The idea of Grandparents Day began in 1970, when Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade (from West Virginia) started a campaign to designate a special day to celebrate grandparents. Original Author Unknown Need: paper plates, crayons or paint, paper Directions: Paste or staple 2 paper plate HALVES together. Decorate both sides with crayons or paint. Attach a strip of colored construction paper to the ends for a handle. May Pole added 8-18-98 Original Author Unknown Need: Carpet tube, paint, Christmas tree stand, streamers or ribbon, and duct tape Directions: Used a cardboard tube that a room size rug is rolled on, painted it white, and put it in a Christmas tree stand! (you know the old red and green one with the screws). She attached 8 satin ribbons about 2" in width to the top using very wide duct tape. The streamers were the length of the pole. We took it out to the front yard and 8 children at a time skipped and danced around. We played "Vivaldi's Four Seasons" (Spring) for the dance. All of us had a ball. Always wanted to do this but could never rig up the pole.

Lay some newspaper out on your work space. Cut a 12 inch or so piece of waxed paper and lay it down on the work space. Trace your shapes with a template, stencil or cookie cutter onto the wax paper using a permanent marker. Make them about an inch apart from each other. Use simple shapes that can represent Beltane- stars, sun shapes, flowers, leaves, candles with a flame atop them, birds, butterflies or dragonflies. Peel the paper off your crayons. Grate them with the cheese grater. You can grate them directly over the wax paper for a random pattern, or you can grate the different colors into separate bowls or piles and sprinkle them onto the shapes with your fingers to have more control over the colors. Carefully cover the shavings with another sheet of waxed paper. Cover that with newspaper.

The president said no way and the story touched the nation. Soon a small toy bear was created that became popular around the world for generations to come the "Teddy Bear". May Day Preschool Activities and Crafts
Home Themes Holidays and Events May Many years ago, May 1st or May Day was a magical time to welcome spring. On the night before May Day, children danced in the moonlit woods. They gathered spring flowers. They made crowns of daisies . Why not make a crown of daisies and celebrate May Day? You can celebrate it just as in the past! Read on and find out what would happen on May Day. When the sun rose, the May day fun continued. Villagers met in the woods to choose the tree that would become the Maypole. The chosen tree was the tallest, slimmest tree that could be found in the forest. It was carried into the village. All the villagers paraded along with it. The villagers chose a May Queen . The new Queen was crowned with fresh spring flowers. The villagers cheered and flung flower petals into the air. The crowd danced into the village square. The Maypole was painted and decorated with ribbons, flowers, and bright handkerchiefs. The

I love Father's Day. It's so much fun seeing Daddy and the girls interacting on this special day. The girls are always on their best behavior and Darren is so in tune with the family (no work brought home, no grass to mow...) As always, we use crafts as gifts from the girls. It seems more special than a wallet somehow (although I must admit, we often buy something to accompany the crafted gifts). YOU'RE A GREAT CATCH
    Father's Day Card
Give each child a 9" paper plate. Cut out two small triangeles from paper plate to make the tail section. See illustration. Reproduce the fish pattern . (Pattern will open up into a new window.) Cut out, trace onto oaktag, and cut out again. (Use this as your main pattern) Have each child trace the oaktag pattern onto white construction paper and cut out. Then glue the fish onto the paper plate, as shown. Then glue seashell for the eye. On the card, write, "To Dad (or Grandpa, etc.), You're a great catch!" Apply glue all around edges of fish and onto tail. Sprinkle sand on the glue while still wet. Shake off excess sand. Have each child tie a piece of yarn about 14" long (fishing line) to a stick (1' long- fishing pole) and attach a paper clip to the other end of the yarn. With a hole puncher, children will make a hole where indicated on the fish and hook the paper clip through it.
    NUTS AND BOLTS PAPERWEIGHT
In a large mixing bowl, mix together plaster of Paris and water (two parts plaster to one part water). Stir until the mixture is smooth. Give the students a handful of plaster and let them mold the plaster into a mound, about 3" in diameter. Decorate by pressing with a variety of nuts, bolts, nails, and screws into the surfaces. Set the paperweights on old newspapers to dry for two or three days. Spray paint them silver after they dry. Trace paperweight onto a piece of felt and cut out. Trim edges and glue to bottom of paperweight for protective covering for bottom.
