Unsourced material may be challenged and removed (August 2010) In materials science , the strength of a material is its ability to withstand an applied stress without failure. Yield strength refers to the point on the engineering stress-strain curve (as opposed to true stress-strain curve) beyond which the material begins deformation that cannot be reversed upon removal of the loading. Ultimate strength refers to the point on the engineering stress-strain curve corresponding to the maximum stress. The applied stress may be tensile compressive , or shear A material's strength is dependent on its microstructure. The engineering processes to which a material is subjected can alter this microstructure. The variety of strengthening mechanisms that alter the strength of a material includes work hardening solid solution strengthening precipitation hardening and grain boundary strengthening and can be quantified and qualitatively explained. However, strengthening mechanisms are accompanied by the caveat that some mechanical properties of the material may degenerate in an attempt to make the material stronger. For example, in grain boundary strengthening, although

The concept of stress originated from the study of strength and failure of solids. The stress field is the distribution of internal "tractions" that balance a given set of external tractions and body forces. First, we look at the external traction T that represents the force per unit area acting at a given location on the body's surface. Traction T is a bound vector , which means T cannot slide along its line of action or translate to another location and keep the same meaning. In other words, a traction vector cannot be fully described unless both the force and the surface where the force acts on has been specified. Given both D F and D s , the traction T can be defined as The internal traction within a solid, or stress, can be defined in a similar manner. Suppose an arbitrary slice is made across the solid shown in the above figure, leading to the free body diagram shown at right. Surface tractions would appear on the exposed surface, similar in form to the external tractions applied to the body's exterior surface. The stress at point

Mechanics of Materials, Beer Johnston
Sat, Dec 5, 2009 Earthwork Design To implement good analysis of such structures or building, civil engineers are encouraged to determine structural load with support reaction and displacement based on the geometry, material properties and other conditions and limitations. To get accurate solution of structural analysis, there are suggested way that should be recommended an applied approach. The basic approach is by using mechanical of materials analysis or strength of material approach. Finite element and elasticity can be other approaches. If you do not master strength of material approach yet, it is recommended to read Beer and Johnston ’s Mechanics of Materials book . As best selling reference of solid mechanics subject, this book has its superiority on its detailed explanation and presentation with helpful figures or illustration. The author of this civil engineering book provides clear key concepts to connect the theory and application in engineering fields. Nowadays

Welcome to the
Most human-made features of civilization are the result of engineering work. Mechanical and materials engineering concentrates on energy conversion and conservation, and on moving machinery. The products of mechanical and materials engineering are found everywhere - in houses and factories, on roads and rails, in the air and outer space.
Because of the far-reaching effects of mechanical and materials engineering, it is one of the most popular choices for students entering engineering studies. As graduates of Western's program, mechanical engineers are versatile professionals, interacting with and supporting all other branches of engineering and many other professions as well.

    Answers To Selected Problems
Please sent me an e-mail ( mavable@mtu.edu ) of any corrections. These corrections will be listed in an errata file and will be incorporated into the online book at least once a year. Please help me with my effort to provide free online book by sending me problems of practical nature and of applications that are currently not in the book. This will help me update the book periodically. Hand written scanned problems and solutions are fine, though a typed electronic copy will be greatly appreciated. I will acknowledge your contribution when I post the problems online.
    Errata
The corrections listed in the errata file have been incorporated in the online book. The errata file is for those visitors who printed the August, 2009 version and may prefer to either print just the corrected pages or make hand corrections rather than print the entire book all over again.
